so what's the word with iOS4 on the 3G? I heard initial reports that it was a 3G killer and not to upgrade. I don't plan on doing anything until at least .1 or when they fix the iphone 4 antenna issues, but i'm just curious.

rumor spread by an analyst.

Verizon specifically told employees Saturday, 2 days ago, iPhone not coming to Verizon
http://www.droid-life.com/2010/06/25/rumor-verizons-big-sunday-meeting-means-name-change-and-no-iphone/

if iPhone DOES come to Verizon, i bet you the launch will make the iPhone 4 launch of 1.7M look like peanuts... Verizon has 92.8 million customers, I bet they could sell 3M on launch weekend, easy.

Those droid-life sources aren't exactly the most reliable. The Verizon CEO did say that the decision is apple's though earlier last week.

too true, and Engadget reported that VZW isn't changing their name, so not sure why they got a bogus report. one would think it wouldn't be that hard to get an anonymous tip from a VZW employee.

Um and AT&T has 87 million. Hardly that much bigger. Plus AT&T has the advantage of prior iphone customers.

Um, thanks for enforcing my point. 1.7M of 20-30Million iPhone users? VZW has NONE, yet it recent polls it suggests that 53% of VZW customers have iPhone envy? (But are unwilling to switch carriers?) Not to mention the estimated 500,000-1M people that would switch from AT&T to VZW. People that already have an iPhone are less likely to upgrade than people that don't have one at all.

http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/Verizon-Customers-Suffer-from-iPhone-Jealousy-Says-Survey-784099/

i mean take the best selling smartphone on the market and couple it with the carrier with the highest satisfaction rate and it's a blowout win.

"Verizon Wireless Said to Get IPhone in January"

Quote :
"June 29 (Bloomberg) -- Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile-phone company, will start selling Apple Inc.’s iPhone next year, ending AT&T Inc.’s exclusive hold on the smartphone in the U.S., two people familiar with the plans said.
The device will be available to customers in January, according to the people, who declined to be named because the information isn’t public. Brenda Raney, a spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment. Natalie Kerris, an Apple spokeswoman, and Peter Thonis, a Verizon Communications Inc. spokesman, declined to comment.
The iPhone, which has been the sole domain of rival AT&T in the U.S. since June 2007, will give Verizon a boost in its competition for smartphone customers, UBS AG analyst John Hodulik said in an interview. Verizon customers, who numbered 92.8 million at the end of the first quarter, may buy 3 million iPhones a quarter, he estimates.
“The fact is, Apple is going to dramatically increase the number of devices it sells in the U.S. when exclusivity at AT&T ends,” said Hodulik, who is based in New York and rates Verizon shares “neutral.” “It’s hard to ignore the quality issues that AT&T has faced.”
Verizon Wireless, which is building a high-speed fourth- generation network, plans to unveil a number of devices that will run on the new technology in January at the Consumer Electronics Show, Chief Executive Officer Lowell McAdam has said.
Verizon Communications, which co-owns the wireless company with Vodafone Group Plc, rose 28 cents to $28.99 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading at 3:08 p.m. AT&T declined 54 cents to $24.41. Apple, based in Cupertino, California, dropped $9.45 to $258.85 on the Nasdaq Stock Market."

well rumor has had it for years now that they are locked into AT&T for 5-years, that would release them July 2012... we've been hearing rumors now of an iPhone on Verizon for at least the last year since 3GS release and still nothing. i just don't see why a) they would release it after the holidays, or b) not on their regularly schedule iPhone release schedule of June, you would think you'd want them to be released at the same time as other updates.

i just can't see this happening, although WSJ said in March that a CDMA iPhone was going to start production in Sept. which would support a Jan.2011 launch, but seems like odd timing. then again the iPad was in April this year, so who knows.

How about Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology (and inspiration for the ASUS company name) galloping forth with promises of a CDMA iPhone. Right, just in time for the holiday shopping season and perfectly aligned with Apple's annual September iPod event... you know, should Apple want to announce a deal with Verizon."

Does anyone know how to make changes to the auto-correct dictionary of the iPhone OS? I guess at some point I typed "^yea" on my iphone in response to a thread and now it autocorrects "yea" to "^yea" every time, very annoying when typing texts. No matter how many times I hit the little "x" when it suggests "^yea" it's not getting the message that 99.999% of the time "yea" is, in fact, what I'm actually trying to type.

I believe there is a new feature in iOS4 that allows you to do just that. Don't know where it is, haven't updated yet.

^you're thinking of the custom dictionary function which, contrary to popular belief, doesn't do anything in iOS4 for autocorrect, spellcheck, or suggested words.....it's just there to allow people using chinese keyboards to have more control over which chinese characters appear when they type out certain words

quick imovie question...

I started a new project, selected the theme (travel) and imported all my photos/clips. However, when I preview the project/export it, the theme isn't there. Everything else that I changed/added worked great and I love the app. But why the hell didn't the theme show up? I have since tried to create a few other test projects with just photos or just video clips and still no themes. It lets me select, it shows in the timeline, but not in the project proper.

Any ideas?

I'll be interested to see if Verizon does get the iPhone soon what happens with the networks. I figure a whole lot of people who are fed up with ATT will jump ship to VZW now that they can get the iPhone there. What will be hilarious is if tons of current VZW customers pick up iPhones and a good number jump ship to them how the networks will fare. Perhaps all of a sudden Verizon's begins to take huge dumps with the increase in traffic and ATT users who stay are like thank god all those people left now everything is running great!

I definitely think it's only a matter of time before VZW has an iPhone. The rumors about a launch in the very near future may be true, but if they're not, it wouldn't surprise me.

If the rumors are untrue, my guess is that the "leak" was a purposeful effort to retain those VZW customers who are contemplating switching to AT&T just to get the new iPhone. If I were a VZW customer who was at or near the end of my contract and this fancy new iPhone comes out, I might consider a switch. But then I am bombarded with impeccably timed rumors and speculation about a VZW iPhone launch in mere months, I'm going to stick with Verizon.

^ interesting point. the conspiracy is on.

I remember just as the iPhone was about to officially launch here in Korea, all the Korean manufacturers started hustling out revamped touch screens. Then again, they are pretty aggressive in general about launching new phones. Though it did seem - to my observations - that touch screens were being aggressively pushed at that time. Feels like every month there's some new gadget. It's ridiculous. They almost all follow the iPhone (well, all the ones which are at least nominally popular). Except they have more buttons Some of the cheapy touch screen phones are super duper slow in terms of response, etc.

Glad I got the iPhone. phew

Aaaaaaaaaaand mystery officially solved.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3794/the-iphone-4-review

Quote :
" So, an entire day and more than a quarter tank of gas later, here are the results. Holding the iPhone 4 without a case, in your left hand, crossing the black strip can result in a worst case drop of 24 dB in signal. As we'll show in a second, how you hold the phone makes a huge difference across every smartphone - and we've tested thoroughly in 5 different positions.

Now, there are two vastly different possibilities for what happens to the bar visualization after you drop 24 dB. I happen to live less than one block from an AT&T UMTS tower (it's across the street, literally), and have exceptionally strong signal in all of my house - it's part of why I chose to live here, actually. Signal is above -65 dB in every single room, in most cases it's at -51 dB. When I incur that worst case drop of 24 dB from squeezing the phone, I fall down to -83 dB, which is still visualized as 5 bars.

However, in locales that have less signal, but where iOS still displays 5 bars, the drop of 24 dB is visualized much differently. For example, at another test location, signal without holding the phone is -89 dB, which is still displayed as 5 bars. Cup the phone, and you'll fall all the way to -113 dB. All the bars dramatically disappear one after the other, people think they've dramatically lost all the signal, and you know the rest."

Yeah but when i hold my phone the bars drop to none and it goes into "searching mode" and nothing works. So they're saying that's just the phone tricking itself into thinking there's no signal? and can be fixed with a software patch?

Nooooooooo...........when you hold your phone you are definitely affecting the strength of the signal. Whether or not you can still make calls/use data depends on how strong your signal strength was originally and exactly how you're holding the phone. Read the article.

Never had these issues with my old badass Nokia 5110 circa 2001. I could swap out a different face plate every day to match my outfit and had a cool antenna that flashed colors when it rang. Even had 'Big Pimpin' by Jay-Z in midi form as my ringtone.

Fact is, the iPhone does still indeed have a problem. It sounds like it can be updated with a software patch though. And it does seem to have to do in part with the antenna design and "how" you hold it. Anandtech just confirmed it and why the meter displays the way it does.

FWIW, I can cup my Droid tightly on all sides and never drop bars. Not one. So I don't fully buy that "every" smartphone has the same issue. I believe how you hold it can impact your signal strength, sure, but not that it has a detrimental impact on "every" smartphone.

Lost in all of the buzz surrounding the iPhone 4 antenna fiasco was the fact that Apple has three new job listings for antenna engineers. Well, that is until Engadget unearthed them after sitting unnoticed since June 23rd, or one day before the official launch of the iPhone 4 and the very same day that the now infamous reception issues came to light. Here’s a little snippet from the job description.

“Define and implement antenna system architecture to optimize the radiation performance for wireless portable devices [...] The The candidate should be able to design antennas suitable for wireless handheld devices with excellent radiation performance [...] Work closely with other RF and antenna design engineers, mechanical and industrial designers, and EMC engineers to integrate the antenna design in our products.”

Irony, we love you so!
Thanks, Zachary!"

Giz got their hands on an official court document that details the first (of we’re sure many) class action lawsuits that Apple and AT&T will be dealing with in regards to the iPhone 4. Some of the claims made in the Maryland based suit include:

General Negligence (APPLE and AT&T)
Defect in Design, Manufacture, and Assembly (APPLE)
Breach of Express Warranty (APPLE)
Breach of Implied Warranty for Merchantability (APPLE and AT&T)
Breach of Implied Warranty of Fitness for a Particular Purpose (APPLE and AT&T)
Deceptive Trade Practices (APPLE and AT&T)
Intentional Misrepresentation (APPLE and AT&T)
Negligent Misrepresentation (APPLE and AT&T), Fraud by Concealment (APPLE and AT&T)

Incase you’ve been living under a rock for the last week, Apple’s iPhone 4 has been accused of: antenna issues, screen issues, Exchange issues, proximity sensor issues, and several others. We’re sure Apple (and possibly AT&T) can expect to see another complaint filed in California soon. Hit up the read link to see all of the documents."

I got mine yesterday and have been very impressed thus far. I had a 3G prior to this one, so it's blazing fast in comparison. Has anyone found a free flashlight app that utilizes the camera "flash" LED? I saw one for a buck or two, but nothing free yet that came up in searches.

Are you sure you've seen an app (paid even?) that uses the LED light? There are tons of apps that just turn the screen all white and jack the brightness all the way up, but the last I heard, Apple didn't allow use of the LED in their APIs so there was no Apple approved way to use that light. Several apps have supposedly been submitted for approval, but if they use non Apple APIs, there's no way they will get greenlit. Seems like including that as a feature of the OS would be a no-brainer, but then again Apple always does seem to frequently fuck up the simplest things.

I think the one i saw just turned on the video camera and set the light to stay on with some stupid "night vision" red light. Redundant if you know how to just turn on the video camera with the light.
