i just like to warn everyone i can. the only product from them i can bring myself to recommend is the Marlin 795, simply because it's cheap enough that it's a good buy even with its QC issues.

go handle and cycle some old Marlin leverguns and then try out a brand new one. you'll see.

what do you wanna do with it? a 44 mag lever action is a great deer hunting rifle, but it's expensive to feed if all you wanna do is play with it at the range.

God new Marlin leverguns are a nightmare, especially the stainless ones.

Remington 700s have been coming out of the factories for a couple years now with scope holes tapped NOT ON THE BORE CENTERLINE.

H&R pretty much always made shit (IMO) but their break-action single shots were always OKAY. I'd be terrified to shoot one now in a larger caliber (like 45-70).

I can't really comment intelligently on any of the other brands they've scooped up, but damn right it's a discussion that needs to be had on every page.

Customer service is a big bag of shit now too. For most purposes (other than affordable 45-70s unfortunately) you can easily avoid these companies, so in my mind it's not a huge deal. Just good to be informed.

I bought my mom an '80s marlin 336 and her partner bought a new one around the same time (crazy coincidence)...the difference is night and day. The older one is a gorgeous, solid, flawless tack driver. The new one feels like a piece of shit and I don't even like shooting it. It does the trick but I would never buy a new marlin.

I would second the question "what do you wanna do with it" on the 44mag levergun.

When I still had my revolver in that chambering and was considering reloading that caliber, I throughly researched the options.

For my purposes the offerings from Uberti and Henry were best. I have a couple of Henrys already and can attest to the very high quality of the firearm.

44mag in an 1873 replica (Uberti) is somewhat of an interesting topic. I love the function of the 1873 action, but the strength of the design in that caliber is questionable to me.

That particular topic has been hashed out throughly on various messageboard, so ill let you have at that, but oddly ive never seen a review of that particular gun.

I do know that the proofing process that Italians use in proofing their guns is much more demanding than what we do over here. The proofing ammo they use in testing the rifles is loaded to a ridiculous pressure.

I don't think a company like Uberti would welcome such an obvious lawsuit anyway, so it's probably a stout weapon. Definitely research how an 1873 action works as compared to a later model (cartridge elevator / toggle link system).

44mag is easy to reload, although bullet diameter is actually around .430 and isn't the easiest to find. Still lots of choices. Very forgiving.

^Agreed, although magazines are small, scarce, and expensive. It's a great idea and I love the company. The trigger isn't nerfed by lawyers either. Mounting system is great too-

The best semi-auto is any AK that doesn't fall apart in your hands.

The coolest IMO is a (new) Mini-30, but it's picky about what it eats.

Hell, my AK rings steel at 150 yards all day long from an unsupported position. It wasn't even that expensive (cheaper than a Glock).

It is a beater rifle that I would trust any time.

I played around with my Marlin .44mag lever gun today, and its a great gun. Reloads make it not terribly expensive and its still cheaper to shoot than .30-30 if you buy the ammo from Wal-Mart.

Deadly accurate, but stout recoil.

260 is much easier on your shoulder. for .260, unless you sight-in once a year and then hunt with it, ammo costs are gonna be too high to not reload.

honestly, if you're not gonna reload, then just stick with .308. nothing else really makes sense.

a basic reloading setup costs less than a good scope and takes up less space than a gun safe. roll your own!

Even if you aren't going to reload, don't let that dissuade you from true long-range calibers, like .300 WM or .338 Lapua.

Don't get sucked into the ".308 for economical long-range platforms"

.308 is not a long-range cartridge. .308 is a battle rifle cartridge that was pushed into double duty because of NATO agreements.

So if money is no object, go for something with better external and terminal ballistics than .308.

Expect to pay between $400-600 depending on how much time you take. Mine was just at 600 but I did have some complicated things added. Their suggestion was to only have 2 people on the original trust. So, I had a trust then I also had them draft a possible amendment to the trust to add my brothers later on.

600 or the trust
2200 for the toys
600 for the tax stamps
400-600 for other pistons/adapters
