i was at a party Saturday and the other guy I was with was using his phone way more than me and his battery didn't die nearly as fast. i've only had it since Friday, but I definitely haven't been able to go two days between charges

so are the new iphones just worse on battery life than the older ones?
I have the original one, and I charge it about every 3 days. Granted I don't talk much, but i do a fair amount of texting, and it's my web browsing device when i'm on the couch and my kid is watching cartoons. 7/12/2010 1:43:03 PM |

Consumer Reports rescinds it's recommendation to buy the iPhone 4 after conducting further studies on the antenna issue. And they aren't shy with their words.
http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electronics/2010/07/apple-iphone-4-antenna-issue-iphone4-problems-dropped-calls-lab-test-confirmed-problem-issues-signal-strength-att-network-gsm.html
Quote : | "It's official. Consumer Reports' engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception. When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone's lower left side—an easy thing, especially for lefties—the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in an area with a weak signal. Due to this problem, we can't recommend the iPhone 4.
We reached this conclusion after testing all three of our iPhone 4s (purchased at three separate retailers in the New York area) in the controlled environment of CU's radio frequency (RF) isolation chamber. In this room, which is impervious to outside radio signals, our test engineers connected the phones to our base-station emulator, a device that simulates carrier cell towers (see video: IPhone 4 Design Defect Confirmed). We also tested several other AT&T phones the same way, including the iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre. None of those phones had the signal-loss problems of the iPhone 4.
Our findings call into question the recent claim by Apple that the iPhone 4's signal-strength issues were largely an optical illusion caused by faulty software that "mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength."
The tests also indicate that AT&T's network might not be the primary suspect in the iPhone 4's much-reported signal woes.
...
If you want an iPhone that works well without a masking-tape fix, we continue to recommend an older model, the 3G S." |

Battery life is much better than the 3gs and a whole lot better than the 3g. Atleast I can tell a big difference between the 4 and the 3gs.7/12/2010 3:18:36 PM |
El Nachó special helper 16370 Posts user info edit post |
It seems to vary by phone. I'd say I get slightly less battery life on my 4 than I did with my 3GS, but that's only the general feeling I get when using it, and not any sort of testing I've done. After using it for 3 years you start to get a feeling for what is normal and that you'll use x% of battery before lunch time and surfing for 20 minutes reduces it for x%, etc. I just don't feel like the 4 is any better than previous models, and on some days it feels a little worse.
But 3 days usage between charges on ANY generation iPhone seems to be incredible even with minimal usage. Especially on a 3 year old battery. I'm certainly not calling anyone a liar, but that's not something I would expect at all. If those are your expectations, I wouldn't get your hopes up for the 4 to exceed or even meet that.] 7/12/2010 3:26:47 PM |

http://www.cultofmac.com/pr-experts-iphone-4-hardware-recall-is-inevitable/50565
Quote : | "Apple will be forced to recall the iPhone 4 following Consumer Reports tests proving the “Death Grip” antenna issue is not software related, but a hardware flaw, PR experts say.
“Apple will be forced to do a recall of this product,” said Professor Matthew Seeger, an expert in crisis communication. “It’s critically important. The brand image is the most important thing Apple has. This is potentially devastating.”
Crisis communication experts contacted by CultofMac.com, including Chris Lehane, former Clinton White House ”Master of Disaster,” agree: the iPhone 4 reception issue presents a Toyota-style PR crisis for Apple, and the company must respond with a more meaningful fix than a software patch.
Apple acknowledged the issue earlier this month but said the problem was caused by the way the iPhone calculates signal strength. The company has promised to issue a software fix shortly. Many critics viewed Apple’s response as spin, which was compounded on Monday by a devastating report from Consumer Reports saying the reception issue is hardware related.
Toyota has been severely punished for its foot-dragging response to concerns about the safety of the Prius. Toyota recalled about 10 million vehicles worldwide and its reputation has been seriously damaged.
“Apple needs to put this fire out now,” said Dr. Larry Barton, a leading expert in crisis management and author of Crisis Leadership Now. “There has to be a military-like response to this issue. And we have not seen this kind of urgency.”
Dr. Barton said Apple should quickly issue a statement that either strongly refutes Consumer Reports‘ tests; or admit the issue and detail some kind of hardware fix. Saying the iPhone 4 has a problem calculating signal strength doesn’t cut it, Dr. Barton said.
“Their response has been lackluster,” he said. “It’s been borderline irresponsible. They are in danger of betraying customers’ trust and hurting the brand, which is infinitely more valuable than any one product.”
Consumer Reports is a well-respected publication with a long history of being impartial and fair, Dr. Barton noted. “Their advisory is a serious one.” he said.
Dr. Barton is a former professor at Harvard Business School, Penn State, University of Nevada at Las Vegas and Boston College. He was Vice President of Crisis Management at Motorola from 1995 to 1999.
Crisis communications expert Chris Lehane, the “Master of Disaster,” a nickname earned managing bad PR for the Clinton White House, said Apple dug itself into a deep hole with its software fix response, which was obviously rushed.
“It’s the ‘half-loaf’ approach,” he said. “Apple was under tremendous pressure to respond. They pushed out some information that wasn’t really baked.”
Lehane said the statement only raised a red flag for organizations like Consumer Reports to take a close look at the issue.
“They found themselves in a hole, and they dug a deeper hole,” he said.
Lehane contrasted this to Apple’s response to the price drop of the original iPhone back in 2007. Faced with a backlash from early adopters, Steve Jobs quickly published an apology on Apple’s website and issued a refund.
“You acknowledge it; you address it; you deal with it,” Lehane said. “Apple must protect its brand image, its crown jewels, at all cost. Apple has enormous consumer loyalty but it depends on whether people believe it’s credible.”
To protect its image, Apple will have to recall the iPhone, said Prof. Seeger, who is chair of the Department of Communication at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Prof. Seeger said Apple will likely delay a recall, and may issue a temporary “patch” such as free bumpers. However, a recall is unavoidable to protect the brand, which is more valuable than the cost of a recall, Prof. Seeger said.
“Apple lives and dies by its reputation,” he said. “We pay a premium for its products. We expect them to operate on a premium level. It’s very unfortunate, but they will have no choice but to mount a recall.”
Apple didn’t respond to requests for comment." |

^I'm not convinced they will. I think if the software update will fix this, that'll be the end. I can replicate the issue when I try but it has never happened by accident. 7/13/2010 3:42:29 PM |
El Nachó special helper 16370 Posts user info edit post |
There's no way it's a software problem. Too many people that know what they're talking about have proved otherwise. They may try to sweep this under the rug or keep pretending that it's not an issue and hope that people forget by the time they release another product, but they really should do whatever it takes to make this right ASAP (which IMO, could only be a recall and replacement of all hardware). Then again, so far they've been doing a halfway decent job of just pretending the problem doesn't exist, so maybe they plan on sticking with that strategy.] 7/13/2010 3:50:23 PM |

It would be much cheaper for Apple to offer the "bumper" case as a free accessory instead of doing a mass recall. i predict they will probably choose this route while refuting the tests. 7/13/2010 3:55:09 PM |

I imagine they should do a recall but I could care less. I have a case on it which eliminates the issue and its reception is better than the 3gs. Even without a case I could replicate the issue but never did it on purpose.
I ordered one of these:

^^That looks no different from mine that I got a day before launch day. I can see my proximity sensor and I bet you can too if you put the phone under a bright enough light and hold it at the right angle, that picture was probably taken with a flash.
Also, I remember reading an article written by an antenna engineer about the iPhone 4 talking about how any change to the antenna design would require going through the FCC testing process again. I highly doubt they've redesigned the antenna, resubmitted it to the FCC, and are already rolling out an updated model.

Hopefully it's something they can permanently fix in a future update.

I don't know that they'll recall it. Jobs has gotten even more cocky (if that's possible) since the original iPhone launch. The average Joes buying it are doing it because they think it's a status symbol (they apparently haven't heard of Vertu) and probably don't care if it makes calls; and the Apple fanboys will make any excuse for it they can. That just leaves the people who are tech-savvy and only like Apple for the iPhone (I was formerly in this camp), and Apple doesn't care too much about them anyway.
In other news, if you know anyone that wants to buy the iPhone 4, I'll pay people $100 to take over my 2-line contract. They'd be eligible for new customer pricing on both lines.

FWIW, I got a (black) bumper and it took care of the antenna issue for me. The bumper itself is really nice, but I'm not convinced it'll save me in case of a drop (the main reason I bought it).
What's bugging me more is the proximity sensor issue. My phone turns on at random while I'm talking on it and I end up hanging up/facetiming/muting/adding parties to my calls. Very annoying, and well documented at this point.

FYI: anybody interested in jailbreaking/unlocking your iPhone4 should visit http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/ and download and run tiny umbrella and get your ecid on file. Even if you're not sure, or don't think you will ever want to jailbreak, it's still not a bad idea just in case you ever change your mind (or want to ever be able to downgrade to 4.0 at some point in the future when Apple tells you you can't) It doesn't alter anything on your phone all it does is put your device id on record so that you'll always be able to go to/stay at 4.0. This may or may not be important if you ever want to jailbreak and/or unlock in the future. 7/14/2010 9:12:41 PM |
