ownership of an iPhone is a requirement to participate? jesus christ, i've been out of Tech Talk for a few days, come back to read up on a few things and comment a bit, and you want to take me to the woodshed for commenting? i'm sorry if you don't like that i'm choosing to participate, and disagree with your view, but i have as much right to post my views here as you do. that includes if you don't like or agree with them. i didn't seek to pick a fight with anyone, but you're doing a bang-up job of turning it into one. chill out.

Quote : | "RIM co-CEOs pull no punches responding to Apple's antenna statements By Chris Ziegler posted Jul 17th 2010 12:56AM
Thought Nokia's statement was strongly worded? That was nothing compared to the little tirade put together by RIM co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie -- a pair of dudes known for having some of the bigger mouths (and bigger egos) in the wireless industry -- in direct response to Apple's Friday press conference on antenna issues. Of course, unlike Nokia, Apple made it personal for RIM because it used the Bold 9700 as a demonstration device in its attempt to prove that signal loss was a problem for phones and manufacturers from all walks of life, but Mike and Jim are having none of it. Phrases like "self-made debacle" and "deliberate attempts to distort the public's understanding" should give you an idea of the statement's overall flavor, but basically, they're saying that RIM puts a lot of time, money, and energy into avoiding dropped call issues and that you don't need a case to use any of their phones. Snap!
Here's the full statement:
"Apple's attempt to draw RIM into Apple's self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple's claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public's understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple's difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage. One thing is for certain, RIM's customers don't need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple."" |

Your 10:1 ratio is a joke. There's no way it's more than 50:50 at a worst case scenario. And if you remove gloveco from the situation (which thankfully we have now) it's easily 1:10 in favor of helpful and/or informative posts.
We've gone over this in the past, and for some reason you've just got it set in your head that I'm some massive asshole that's only here to stir up shit, but the simple fact of the matter is that I play nice way more often than not. And the times that I don't, I'm still doing it out of some (probably misguided, I'll admit) attempt to actually get the thread back on track/remove the riff raff/whatever. I long ago gave up on trying to please you because no matter how many times I post something helpful, you'll still pick out the times like this to harp on. Quote : | "Consumer Reports still gives Apple’s iPhone 4 the big thumbs down by Kelly Hodgkins on July 17th, 2010 at 9:01pm Filed under: Apple 152 Comments
In response to Apple’s antenna-oriented press event, Consumer Reports responded by refusing to give the Apple iPhone 4 its golden seal of approval. The consumer product ratings company commended Apple for taking a first step in solving the antenna problem but denounced Apple’s case giveaway as a limited and temporary fix. Consumer Reports states:
Consumer Reports believes Apple’s offer of free cases is a good first step. However, Apple has indicated that this is not a long-term solution, it has guaranteed the offer only through September 30th, and has not extended it unequivocally to customers who bought cases from third-party vendors. We look forward to a long-term fix from Apple. As things currently stand, the iPhone 4 is still not one of our Recommended models.
Consumer Reports joins a growing list of companies, including Nokia and RIM, that are responding in a less than favorable way to Apple’s proposed solution." |

It not overly surprising. Apple at this point has decide not to "fix" the issue and instead to work around it.
That said, aren't they supposed to have some big event in September (that everyone thinks will mark the iPhone on Verizon)? It'd be interesting to see if an "iPhone 4-2" gets made to take the place of the current iPhone. 7/18/2010 12:06:00 PM |

^I thought September was just some rumor created by an analyst? It seems pretty certain that AT&T has exclusivity for 5 years, which means no Verizon iPhone until iPhone 6 (which is also when LTE will probably be firmly established). 7/18/2010 5:44:02 PM |

^You're assuming that the average iPhone buyer is the type of person that would post in the tech talk section of a message board. I think the average iPhone buyer is exactly the type of person that would consult consumer reports before making a purchase, in other words the type of person that has just enough interest in technology to want an iPhone but not enough technical knowledge to make an informed decision for themselves.
Also, Steve Jobs is a huge tool. 7/18/2010 9:03:34 PM |
Optimum All American 13716 Posts user info edit post |
I'd think that the person paying close attention to the Consumer Reports recommendation is the one that's on the fence about buying one, and wants some non-marketing, non-techno-nerd analysis. You're both right, some people are going to buy a new iPhone and don't give a shit about CR, and others are going to use it as as a guide to buy/not-buy. But while most people are only going to take notice of a negative CR report on a hot gadget, few are going to base their buying decision on it. If people were THAT influenced by CR recommendations, Apple would be the #1 laptop seller, since CR consistently rates them #1 for portable computers. 7/18/2010 9:10:24 PM |

I was at the mall today, and the Apple store was BY FAR the busiest store in the mall. It was pretty mind boggling.
It's amusing that Circuit City/Best Buy/CompUSA for years just ignored Apple, then Apple makes their own store and people flock to it.
And i finally got to see an iPhone 4 in person, and it was very nice. Seemed very well built, and the display models didn't have a single scratch on them. 7/18/2010 11:27:08 PM |

Which is why the situation is so bizarre. They have plenty of employees, but none of them seem to want to sell you anything. It's like they've got a 20 man volunteer squad, but only one guy who actually works there.

It's just impossible to find the person who can actually check you out despite the "oh, anyone in the store can check you out" thing they tell you.

Well, to be honest, a "fix" and this work around are the exact same thing. Even if they recalled all the phones and re-manufactured them all, basically they would put the antenna back under plastic and you would have a built in bumper instead of an external one. The problem is the external antenna in general, fixing it requires covering that antenna. A full recall and "fix" would just be a feel good measure, which isn't to say that Apple couldn't stand to do a little ass kissing, but at the same time, iPhone customers are never satisfied (see the price drop / $100 credit fiasco)7/19/2010 1:49:05 PM |
