^ There's no denying that.
Soccer is not a pussy sport, but it is full of pussies.
BTW, is there some requirement that one kit manufacturer must be totally uncreative every four years? '02-'05 it was Nike, with every team having the same basic pattern and number style. Now Nike has all sorts of patterns and typefaces (Korea/Holland, Brazil, US, Mexico, etc.) and all the Puma teams have the exact same shirt and shorts with the same number and letter style.

they talked about the flopping on PTI last week and i think they surmised that it's just the nature of a foreign mindset and that's just how things are (they used vlade divac in nba as an example).
any foreigners have a view on that? 6/14/2006 12:18:01 PM |

Two words: MANU GINOBILI
Dave Eggers wrote an essay about why Americans hate soccer; he said it was solely because of the dishonesty, selfishness, and theatricality of flopping...and he's right.

The goal was a nice strike, but shouldn't have counted. Tunisia had a guy in offsides position affecting the play (he had to duck out of the way of the shot). You don't have to touch the ball for it to be offsides. 6/14/2006 1:09:09 PM |

I thought, and please correct me if I am wrong because I might be, that there had to be a pass to you for you to be considered offsides. I thought you could be offsides as long as no one passed the ball to you. I would like to know the true rule on this if anyone could find it.
This is the only thing I can find that might make me correct, but its doubtful.
For example, if a player is in an "offside position" but not involved in the play, he would not be "offside". This can be a tough call & can be very judgmental.
I am not watching the game since I am at work, but I am interested to know this rule.

You do not have to touch it. It is up to the refs discretion as to whether you are involved in the play.
If you obtruct the keeper or his view, you are affecting the play. In my interpretation, I lean towards calling the offsides if you are anywhere around the goal, because the keeper will have to cover you. 6/14/2006 1:31:11 PM |

Thanks, that is very helpful. In this instance it sounds like a judgmental situation and I agree with you about being around the goal being considered to be involved in the play, particularly if this guy was in the direct path of the kick. 6/14/2006 1:33:20 PM |

I haven't watched every game in its entirety, but I've seen at least 10-15 minutes of every game... and most of them, I've watched the entire thing. You gotta take advantage of soccer on tv while it's available. 6/14/2006 1:34:08 PM |

-the single most frustrating thing when I watch international soccer.
I enjoy soccer, but the diving and faking of injuries irritates the hell out of me. It seems to be most prevalant among players from Latin America and Southern Europe (although you find some of them on about every team).6/14/2006 1:40:22 PM |

its great watching all games live in the afternoon and early evening over here. theres a crowd in most pubs to watch any game. the RTE coverage is highly, HIGHLY superior to the graphics convulsions you see in the US. Simple score bug at the top, light, quiet commentary, and no in-your-face analysis and tickers (they have all the analysis on Eurosports).
Ireland is behind Ivory Coast (same colors, reverse flag), Poland (lots of Polish immigrants here), and whoever plays England
Not to mention they've had features on Beckenbauer, Pele, Maradona, and the other all-time greats on Eurosport all week along w/ all the best past games.
