ESPN's still bitter about the whalers leaving

Fuck 'em. I never liked hockey until the Canes came here. I was born in Charlotte, I hate NASCAR and country. Football is okay, but second to hockey. I know I am an anomoly, but I am confident that there are others like me.

Go Canes!

That article is hilarious, seeing as how I am from Alabama, grew up a Blackhawks fan, and adopted the Hurricanes when I moved to Raleigh. Oh, and I alone probably know about 10 or 20 North Carolinians who love the Hurricanes.

But yeah, I guess there are no Caniacs.

They are, yes--but it's not the leaving for Carolina that they're bitter over.

The Whale used to be broadcast on the Worldwide Leader in Poker from the network's inception up until 1981, when Howard Baldwin (who owned the Whale back then) got in a fight with the high-ups in Bristol. He yanked the Whalers' TV contract and took it to SportsChannel America (now FoxSports New England), a move that almost killed ESPN (which was deep in the red at the time).

Even though Baldwin patched up his differences with a couple of the principals involved (like ESPN founder Bill Rasmussen, who ironically was Chuck Kaiton's predecessor as the Voice of the Whalers), there are still enough people left at or near the top in Bristol that still harbor a grudge that's getting on 25 years old now. Even now, n00bs in Bristol learn quickly that the fastest way to curry favor with the brass is to take a potshot at the Team Formerly Known As The Hartford Whalers.

In a nutshell, that's why ESPN takes shots at this team every chance it gets--all the move really did was give them more ammo.

You know what's really gay?

The whole "us vs. the world" mentality that you people seem to need in order to root for a team.

Not to the extent you all make it out to be, no.

But if that's what takes to develop a fanbase, by all means, go ahead and believe everyone hates Carolina.

Yeah, I mean, it's a real good thing that you brought us this super awesome story about why people at ESPN might not like the Hurricanes

Despite the fact that a hockey game hasn't been on ESPN for the past two years now.

ive never actually been to a "cool bars" thing at the ale house, but it seems its pretty much the only place advertised as showing the road games with as much flare as they do. seems this writer would have heard that at some point

I'm suprised that nothing was mentioned in that piece about the ratings, I love some of the page2 pieces that point out how nascar rainouts, ultimate fighting and poker can beat the nhl ratings.

big game tonight, not really much point to even say it, if sabres win I say they close it out in six, if the canes win I say the series goes 7, with the final game up in the air.

I hope the sabres found a way to get past gerber, their approach needs to be different than with cam, hopefully the change threw them off in game 4, but they've now adjusted, and will get back to scoring.

you'd have a hard time blaming the refs, considering carolina owned buffalo in every aspect of the game, and CAR had more penalty minutes than BUF

With Edmonton having closed out their series last night they will have a good bit of down time. This could work in our favor if we win this series. It could be like how it was with New Jersey in how they swept the Rangers (sorry Stein) and came out flat due to not having played an actual game in a while. Tonight is going to be crucial. Go Canes!

Well the Canes had the 8th best amount of points but were the 3 seed b/c they won the division. Remember they had home-ice advantage every series until the finals in '02...

nope

you are right

we won the division that year with 91 points

although that headline is a bit of a misnomer, b/c we were technically the 16th seed in that playoff
