"That's what we talk about. I try not to get too caught up in the opposing team. What I try to do is tell our guys to do what we're trying to do... do what we're trying to do. I'm more concerned about us. If we do that, then we won't have to worry about what they do."

Quote : | "Instead, for some reason, ESPN's Jimmy Dykes wanted to turn Lowe's big moment into a referendum on Herb Sendek. As the clock wound down and State was about to win, Dykes, ESPN's color commentator, said:
"They’ve got one of their own on the sidelines and that’s what these fans have wanted for years. Herb sendek did nothing but win ball games here but this fan base was never happy with him."
Nothing but win? That's exquisite revisionist history by Dykes. Perhaps he missed February 2006 or Sendek's first five seasons." |
Damn I hate Jimmy Dykes, I wish ESPN had an email address for him so we could show him some TWW love.
And just to fan the comparison fire.....
Quote : | "Michigan can't shoot from the outside, so he played a zone. Voila! Instant coaching. Sendek would have played a man defense ... and lost.
And notice how Lowe handles Grant. The junior point forward is making plays he never would have last season, strictly out of fear of permanent residency in Sendek's chateau bow-wow — where he often resided." |

Not discrediting Lowe, but he might not have gone to a zone if we hadn't lost Atsur. When you are down to 6 men, you have to play a zone. We didn't switch to a zone because they were shooting shitty. They started the game off 2 of 3 from the three point line. Why would you switch to a zone when the opposing team comes out and hits two of their first three 3-pointers?? You wouldn't unless your personel forced you too.

insider article from ESPN about the game:
Michigan lacks killer instinct posted: Tuesday, November 28, 2006 | Feedback | Print Entry
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Michigan coach Tommy Amaker opened his postgame news conference with this: "I thought we came out and played with great energy and passion."
That was undeniably true. The Wolverines did dominate an undermanned NC State squad for the first six-plus minutes in building a 12-point lead.
And then, just like that, it was gone. The Wolverines' energy, edge, passion and purpose left the RBC Center. It did return, but only after the Wolverines were down by 21 eight minutes into the second half against the Wolfpack and first-year coach Sidney Lowe.
NC State went on to hold off Michigan -- a projected NCAA Tournament team that hasn't been to the dance since 1998 -- 74-67 in the opener of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Monday night.
Michigan's inability to step on a team and put it away isn't a new issue. Just listen to what the Wolverines said afterward:
"I don't think we have it right now," Michigan senior guard Dion Harris said of having that attitude to put a team away. "There have been games this season where we haven't finished strong."
Michigan entered the NC State game at 7-0, albeit with all the games at home against lesser competition. Only three of the seven wins were within 10 points (a 10-point win over Davidson, seven over UW-Milwaukee, nine over Youngstown State).
"That's the one thing we've got to work on, and it's a concern of mine," Harris said. "We've got to focus on finishing teams out. We came out and were on another level than NC State, and then we let them back in the game, let the crowd back in.
"That's all part of our focus," Harris said.
NC State made its comeback without its most experienced player, Engin Atsur, who left the game after six minutes and didn't return because of a hamstring injury.
"When you see their point guard go out, the leader of their team, we've got to have the ability to close out a team," Harris said. "It falls on our seniors, all four of us. We've got to lead the team and control things like that. We can't be out there doing silly things and committing silly fouls. Since I've been here that's been the main thing we haven't mastered -- putting teams away and finishing strongly. It's something that happens on a consistent basis."
The most pressing example occurred at the end of last season, when the Wolverines couldn't beat Indiana late at home -- a loss that was costly as Michigan was left out of the NCAA Tournament field.
When NC State cut the lead to 22-21, Amaker called a timeout. The next two offensive possessions, though, ended with a forced shot and then quick airball. NC State took the opening and grabbed the lead with a Brandon Costner 3-pointer.
NC State's switching defenses were an issue for Michigan, but the quick shooting of the Wolverines didn't help. Michigan was 8-of-27 on 3s, and Harris shot 8-of-20 overall. Amaker said that's too many shots. He also noted that Lester Abram (2-of-8) has to play to his potential for the Wolverines to be successful.
Sure, the Wolverines also only went to the free-throw line five times (making all five), something that irked Amaker, but NC State's zone didn't lend itself to the Wolverines getting fouled much. Shooting too quickly in the possession or from too far out also didn't help getting Michigan get any calls.
Still, everything goes back to the punishing attitude that was missing, something that has to be there if the Wolverines are going to be an NCAA Tournament team. Michigan should beat Wofford, Delaware State, Northern Illinois and Army at home, but road games at Miami (Ohio), UCLA and a home game against Georgetown should be a better barometer for the Wolverines heading into the Big Ten. If they get up, they must put a team down.
"I'm hopeful we will," Amaker said of having that attitude. "We're trying to become that. I thought [Monday] would have been a big step in that direction to show we can do it and obviously we weren't able to do what we had to, to win the game. We showed some things that we need to stay away from like putting ourselves in that kind of hole. That was self-destructing. We had some turnovers, didn't have defensive balance and we have to make a shot."
The Wolverines did get some sensational blocks out of Brent Petway (five) and plenty of promise out of freshman forward Ekpe Udoh (5-of-7 shooting for 10 points along with four blocks). But nothing Michigan did matched the hustle and intensity of NC State.
For those who weren't sure how Lowe would coach, you should know this: His players absolutely love him and would run through a brick wall for him.
Atsur went out with six minutes left, yet the Wolfpack played even harder with a lineup that included Gavin Grant, who isn't a true point guard, little known sophomore Courtney Fells, a freshman in Costner, a walk-on in Bryan Nieman, Dennis Horner, the one Herb Sendek signee who stayed, and sophomore Ben McCauley, clearly one of the toughest players in the ACC.
McCauley got schooled a few times by Petway early, only to figure out a way how to score against him. McCauley finished with 19 points and eight boards, making 9-of-18 shots and helping bring energy and intensity to the entire roster.
"We just wanted it more," said McCauley, who became the team's top scorer inside once Andrew Brackman decided to stick with baseball and not play hoops. "We took our time, were patient and made sure we made the right passes. We're a young team, and yet in the second half we wanted it more."
This was a huge game for the Wolfpack. The crowd rallied behind this crew and clearly will throughout the season. It's not going to be an easy go with such a shorthanded team and games upcoming at Virginia (to open ACC play next Sunday), a road game against rebuilding West Virginia, a home game against a top-10 team in Alabama and, of course, the full ACC slate.
Yet, McCauley's ability to score in the post with spin moves, fadeaway shots or simply going in for the offensive rebound, Grant's adequate handling of the point (he did have six of his seven turnovers in the second half to go against seven assists), and spot shooting from Costner and Fells gives this team some hope.
"I couldn't really function in the Princeton offense [run by Sendek], because as you can see, I need the ball more and it shows," Grant said.
"[Coach Lowe] is so energetic and has so much passion for the game," McCauley said. "He loves the game, he loves NC State and he's perfect to have him here. He gives us all so much confidence."
That's why this win meant the world to Lowe. He was so genuinely excited about it.
"I knew our guys wouldn't quit," Lowe said. "We were just jittery and excited at the start. They pulled together. This is a big win for us." 11/28/2006 3:42:34 PM |

lol at Gavin's quote. I understand what he means but he DOES NOT need the ball more at the end of the game. Certainly during the course of most of the game he does and should get the ball more but he is a turnover waiting to happen at the end of games. Get better soon Atsur. We need your calm ball handling for the end of games.

At the game I felt that too, just watching them play I had a feeling that we would come back from that horrible start. They were still doing all right running the offence, but things just felt a little off, they weren't quite clicking and making their shots. That's one thing I like about Sidney's style, they can make changes to their play style in game whereas Herb would be hesitant to change things and put too much faith in his scientific system to eventually start working.11/28/2006 4:15:58 PM |

I honestly didn't see anythign in the first 7 minutes that gave me any hope for the game. Then Atsur got hurt and we went nuts. I think we had 4 points at the 13 minute mark and Fells had taken a few horrible shots on the drive and no one else looked like they had a clue... Then McCaley pumped up the place and Horner had that awesome rebound/layup and we were off...
