^i think shes referring to if the engagement breaks off, not the marriage failing...

like if you propose and the engagement goes bad before a prenup is signed
girl doesnt want to give back heirloom ring

if you do get married, the girl is allowed to keep the ring, which is why i recommend the caveat that if you ever get divorced, she has to turn over the diamond back to the original family that owned it."

from previous page. its true at least in nc

a hint to guys...the marquis cut looks much larger than it actually is. i work at a place that cuts stones and i frequently get asked if my ring is 2 or 3 carats and it is only about 3/4 of a carat.

Joie got me, thank you. Depending on the circumstances of the engagement and the people involved I just don't see that going down very well-- not saying it shouldn't be done. (And anyone who's seen me post in a thread Duke#s has been in, I am very much in favor of prenups.)

agreed. Fumbler and i are getting married on june 6 and i've owned my house for over 3 years now. i wouldn't consider that "much later in life" though. later this year we'll have been out of college for only 4 years. i'm 26, he's 27.

"much later in life" meaning - instead of getting married when you're 19-23 (like it was 20 years ago), people are getting married much later, like 25-29. by that time, you've gotten out of college, gotten a real job, and pretty much started your own life, which more often than not, includes owning a house.

i thought it had been that way for a while, like since the 60s or 70s maybe. i mean, trash (whether white, black, purple, or green) who get pregnant in high school and have to marry the father are a different issue.

^^ Yea I think that is definitely more of the trend now. We are getting married this fall (I'll be 25 a month after we are married and she will be 22), but we have dated for a longgg time and both being out of school, me having a steady job for 2 years (hopefully it stays that way with the economy...) and having dated that long it just felt right to get married now.

to be fair, just because you accidently get pregnant in high school doesn't make you trash, just irresponsible

girls in their 20s and 30s get accidently pregnant all the time.. it's just easier to accept because they "should" be having kids by that age anyway

and btw, 40% of children born these days are born to unwed mothers. so the whole having to marry the father thing is dated.

Here's my bit of advice -

My ring is worth about $6500, but my husband got it for much less since he bought it in the Virgin Islands.

aha
I checked out ringenvy.com again, and I saw this ring, and for a second, I thought someone had copied my ring. And then I read her input.

This is the ring mine is based off of. Apparently, hers, too.

Looks like we both had the same idea

no, i was specifically talking about the trash who gets pregnant in high school. not the non-trash. hence my comment about the trash who gets pregnant in high school.

Fwiw I got my wifes ring at Helzberg, diamond splintered so they replaced them but she wasnt happy with the stones to Helzberg ordered her another ring and swapped it out no cost, I was really impressed with their customer service.

My dream ring... except ya know, not the $11 K Tiffany's version -- I would probably stroke if my bf spent that much on a ring

i don't know why (and i would never want this in an engagement ring, i don't think...maybe like a right hand ring or something) but the black diamonds really intrigue me. it is hard to find rings i like with a black diamond because it is overwhelming i feel like, but i kinda like some of the black diamond rings.

I've had my eye on my great grandmothers ring since I was like, two years old. I hope future partner is classy enough to ask for my hand from my parents because he will be rewarded with a AMAZING rock if they like him enough to agree. Then we can use the ring fund for an awesome honeymoon fund.

Has anyone else used stones that were in the family?

no offense, but considering the quality of stones that Helzberg provides, it probably cost them a trivial amount to replace the stone. I mean, we're talking about absolute garbage here....

^ yea def

I would never accept a family ring on the girl's side of the family. I would MAYBE consider a ring from my side of the family. The whole point of the ring is the man signifying an investment in giving a present to the bride and for the bride to wear something that HE gave her. I could be wrong - but I'd think most girls want modern rings, not from great grandparents...

^ oftentimes what is done is the stones are taken out of the antique setting and places in a more modern setting.
