Navy corpsman faces weapons charge

Posted: Today at 6:04 a.m.
Updated: Today at 9:39 a.m.

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A Navy corpsman has been charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction in eastern North Carolina.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported that 25-year-old Gregory Desmond McGill was charged Thursday by Onslow County sheriff's deputies.

McGill had been arrested Tuesday after deputies said he had a concealed gun, ax, machete and Molotov cocktails in his car. The vehicle was about 100 feet from the Hubert Volunteer Fire Department, where his estranged wife's roommate works.

While McGill was in jail, detectives found a military M81 time blasting fuse in his home Thursday and added the charge of possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

McGill was scheduled for a first appearance in court Friday. It was unclear where McGill was stationed and whether he had an attorney."

I'm going in as an E2 AM this coming June. In order to be an E3 are there any special requirements other than the minimum 9 months.

^ I'll be able to answer that a month from now

Since you are going to be in a position of leadership and responsibility, it seems to me that knowing how the people below you advance in rank (or how they come into the service with advanced rank) might be a good idea.

Other than showing up on time, in the right place and (mostly) sober, no.

You will need to take an advancement exam for E-4 and above.

Apparently coming in at E2 takes 30 or 40 college credits? I believe.

To come in at E3 you need that plus referrels from 2 other navy applicants. Figure i'm coming in kinda late, but job security is rare nowadays and with the Navy filling up so fast why wait. Looking forward to working on something substantial instead of a damn pizza pan if you know what I mean. Its pretty funny, my grandad was a MM and so was my dad. My recruiter is also one as well. Figure I switch it up and be an AM. Fuck stoves.

E2-E3 advancement is automatic unless i'm mistaken. Advancement to E4/E5/E6 requires a test, or you can get automatically advanced based off of your rate or by star re-enlisting. I'm a nuke - I entered as E3 and am automatically advanced to E4 at the end of a-school (about another month and a half). After that I have the option of taking the advancement test in 6 months or automatically making E5 when I sign my 2 year extension (plus I get a nice 100k bonus but that's neither here nor there )

My boyfriend's dad and brother are both in the Navy. It sucks because either one or the other is almost always out at sea, so I didn't meet scary navy dad until we'd been dating a few months, and I met CJ at Christmas, when they both happened to be home.

I'm too cool for questions.

Compare and contrast hydrogen peroxide propulsion and diesel-electric propulsion in submarine applications.

It depends.

Enlist guys are now trying to shift to a 36 at sea, 36 on shore.

Submarine officers are 30 at sea, 24 on shore for their initial tours, and then they change based on...wait for it..."the needs of the navy."

All of this is after initial training.

Personally, I spent two years on my first boat, then split-toured to a new construction in the shipyard (USS NORTH CAROLINA, to be specific) and was on her for 18 months. Now I'm on shore duty and will be transferring to the civilian community in two years or so.

So it is pretty standard, but exceptions can be made.

^^when did they start calling subs "ships" instead of "boats?"

for surface warfare, officers spend 18-36 months depending on what rotation they're on, what their job is, etc. for example, as a JO, I was supposed to do a 2 year tour then an 18 month tour. but I extended and did 31 months then rotated to stand up an anti-terrorism unit for a two year tour.

department heads do 18 month tours usually, unless they're in the weapons/combat systems pipeline and then they'll usually do a full 36 months on one ship. I think CO's and XO's are usually do 18 month tours

"The term "boat" refers to small craft limited in their use by size and usually not capable of making independent voyages of any length on the high seas. The old navy adage to differentiate between ships and boats is that boats are capable of being carried by ships. (Submarines by this rule are ships rather than boats, but are customarily referred to as boats reflecting their previous smaller size.) "

now they're implementing "fleet-up" XO's - they'll do 39 months, half as XO, then relieve the CO. their relief as XO will relieve them, and so on.

I'd go between about 700-1500 m, and an impact angle as close to 90 degrees as possible

I also play entirely too much silent hunter

also for the sailor, what's a guy got to do to get on one of those new LCS ships
