Mr Frog @ Harpers
Actually similar to my own reactions to John McCain, except stretched out over a longer period of time. So maybe I am giving Obama supporters more shit than they deserve.
The cartoon's conclusion is a bit trite though. It seems a to be suggesting that things will never change in this country so long as we keep...voting for politicians we don't agree 100% with? Real fresh smart idea Mr Frog. Really, I think this type of attitude misses the entire point of median voter theorem (the median voter in the primary is different than the median voter in the general election, so it should be no surprise Obama is moving to the center). The simple fact of the matter is that most people don't want broad sweeping change, probably because things are not really that bad to start with. 8/17/2008 7:36:50 PM |

Seeing Tougher Race, Allies Ask Obama to Make 'Hope' Specific
Quote : | "As Senator Barack Obama prepares to accept the Democratic presidential nomination next week, party leaders in battleground states say the fight ahead against Senator John McCain looks tougher than they imagined, with Mr. Obama vulnerable on multiple fronts despite weeks of cross-country and overseas campaigning.
These Democrats — 15 governors, members of Congress and state party leaders — say Mr. Obama has yet to convert his popularity among many Americans into solutions to crucial electoral challenges: showing ownership of an issue, like economic stewardship or national security; winning over supporters of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton; and minimizing his race and experience level as concerns for voters.
Mr. Obama has run for the last 18 months as the candidate of hope. Yet party leaders — while enthusiastic about Mr. Obama and his state-by-state campaign operations — say he must do more to convince the many undecided Democrats and independents that he would address their financial anxieties rather than run, by and large, as an agent of change — given that change, they note, is not an issue. [LOL! ]
'I particularly hope he strengthens his economic message — even Senator Obama can speak more clearly and specifically about the kitchen-table, bread-and-butter issues like high energy costs,' said Gov. Ted Strickland of Ohio. 'It's fine to tell people about hope and change, but you have to have plenty of concrete, pragmatic ideas that bring hope and change to life.'
Or, in the blunter words of Gov. Phil Bredesen, Democrat of Tennessee: 'Instead of giving big speeches at big stadiums, he needs to give straight-up 10-word answers to people at Wal-Mart about how he would improve their lives.' [LOL! ]" |
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/17/us/politics/17elect.html?bl
Let me guess: These top Democrats are racist and/or they're old and just don't get that "hope" and "change" are pretty much all that's needed, am I right? This ain't the so-called Republican attack machine, folks--this is some of the movers and shakers in the Democrat Party expressing serious concerns about your candidate, Obama, days before the supposed uniting of the party at the DNC--at which the Clintons will have two speaking nights and Hillary will get a roll-call vote.
The Democrats can't hit their metaphorical ass with both hands. 8/18/2008 2:43:54 AM |

Allow me to sum up the most likely responses to hookshaw's post (at least the most honest based on previous statements made on this board by Obama supporters).
Quote : | "But hooksaw, what you don't understand is that Obama really is a man of specifics and issues! For example, he has said that he would be out of Iraq in 16 months after his inauguration, how much more specific can you get (though, everyone should realize that isn't a firm deadline, despite the campaign's statements to the contrary during the primaries). He has also laid out a detailed health care plan (the specifics of which have been panned by many economists, but that shouldn't worry you either because everyone knows we can iron out the real specifics later).
He has also been very specific about public financing for political campaigns, addressing green house gas emissions, and renegotiating NAFTA. And he was just as specific when changed his mind on all those issues.
Of course, I don't want to get any more specifics in this debate about specifics. It's really all very boring. I and most other supporters are voting for Obama because of his policy positions and you will just have to take our word for it." |

Wow, that's one of the dumber things i've heard a politician say recently, and i've been listening to a lot of McCAin speeches (not really)
But, how can anyone, especially a politician, come up with 10 words that explains how they'll change someone's life. That's ridiculous.
But I guess it's too much for people to extrapolate on their own how things affect them. Maybe these are dumb people who make less than 80k/year that McCain was talking about.8/18/2008 4:38:45 PM |

I really enjoyed Mr. Obama's rant about Exxon moving jobs and profits offshore and "getting tax-breaks for it." He wants to end tax-breaks for companies that move jobs offshore. Why are companies getting tax-breaks anyway? I'm sure there are far worse reasons that companies are "getting tax-breaks" than simply moving jobs away from profit-sucking unions and democrats.
Furthermore, how, exactly, does Obama expect Exxon to make jobs in the US when he won't let them fucking DRILL FOR OIL IN THE US? Where are those jobs gonna come from, Obama? THEN, he's gonna tax the "windfall profits" which will, say it with me, move more profits offshore so as to avoid the tax on profits, as well as decrease domestic and foreign drilling, thus destroying jobs in the US. All while driving the price of oil UP. Pure. Fucking. Genius. 8/21/2008 11:04:45 PM |

^ Yeah, and if the following momentum keeps up and continues to spread, McCain can add a big white house to that number.
Winthrop/ETV poll shows McCain leads in South
Quote : | "Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain enjoys a 16-point lead — 51 percent to 35 percent — among Southern voters [in 11 states] over rival Democratic U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, a new poll by Winthrop University and ETV shows." |
http://www.heraldonline.com/109/story/765303.html
And there's this:
Obama to General Wesley Clark: Your Services Not Needed
Quote : | "General Wesley Clark is not attending the Democratic National Convention. I was told by General Clark's personal office in Little Rock that he would not be attending.
Clark was informed by Barack Obama's people that there was no reason to come.
General Clark has been given no role of any kind at the convention.
Rubbing salt in the wound even more, the 'theme' of Wednesday's Democratic convention agenda is 'Securing America.'
Wesley Clark's PAC also happens to be called SECURING AMERICA. [Doh!]
This is a mistake in my view. There are a lot of perspectives and competing agendas about how to direct America's next national security posture -- and General Wesley Clark should be one of the top tier names and personalities at the table.
Clark is loved by the netroots -- and I'm sure that they would hope that the Obama campaign will revisit this decision to exclude General Wesley Clark from the entire Democratic National Convention ageda.
-- Steve Clemons
Update: I have reconfirmed with General Wesley Clark's office that he has not been asked to play a role at the Democratic National Convention. His staff have told me that while his schedule remains tight, he would rearrange his schedule to help play any constructive role on any days of the convention if asked." |
http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archives/2008/08/obama_to_genera/
This shows division among the Democrats. Clark was a former Hillary supporter--and was promoted to his highest rank by Bill Clinton.
I mean, why wouldn't Obambi want one of the few four-star generals that the Democrats have to attend the convention? Does he feel that Clark would overshadow him? Is it the flap Clark caused with his disparaging remarks about McCain's military service a while back?
Who knows, but it just doesn't look right to me.8/22/2008 12:06:14 AM |

In any event, I want to clear something up. This arugula business was started by Obama--not the Republicans. And it became a way to simply illustrate that Obama seems to be out of touch with everyday folks.
I mean, most places don't even have a Whole Foods, and most average folks probably eat iceberg lettuce with Thousand Island dressing or something along those lines (I know, "STUPID RACIST FATASSES!!!1" ). In addition, this type of thing has been done time and again, such as when past presidential candidates have been asked about the price of a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk and so on--but Obambi gets testy about it because he's apparently above any sort of "questions."
Newsweek, which is definitely not a conservative publication, perpetuated the arugula angle on a cover (I have the hard copy in front of me). Incidentally, my MS Word didn't even recognize "arugula" until I added it to the dictionary, so it's not a commonly used word.
Only in America Barack Obama is a Niebuhr-reading ESPN watcher. The origins of his troubles with the 'other' tag.

Your arugula stance is full of shit hooksaw. The fact that you are even brandishing an argument with it is so bush league amateur.
He was talking to farmers. he was noting that retailers are raising their prices, with none of that trickling down to the farmers. One could research to see how accurate that is, but that was the point he was making – that big corporate retailers are getting rich at their expense. Granted his choice of arugula was not the most keen, but like i said originally, “big deal.”
Iowans know what arugula is man...the farmers there grow it and it is available. Reference this article if you want to see all the ways how: http://mediamatters.org/items/200708280009
Quote : | "In fact, arugula is grown by local farms in Iowa and is widely available in stores throughout the state, including Cleverly Farms in Mingo, Iowa, and Mariposa Farms in Grinnell, Iowa. Moreover, vendors at numerous farmers markets, including the Davenport Farmer's Market and the Ames Farmers' Market, sell arugula directly from farms to consumers. Several Iowa grocery stores also carry arugula; the website of Hy-Vee, a large grocery chain headquartered in, and with four stores in, West Des Moines, Iowa -- approximately 22 miles from Adel, Iowa, where Obama made his arugula remark -- offers tips on cleaning and serving arugula, as well as several recipes featuring it." |
