I agree, unfortunately. It seems TSB is more of an entertainment forum than one of real thoughtful discussion. People on both sides seem so close minded in their views that the only responses they provoke are equally as absurd. This is not a good forum if you're looking for serious conversations about serious issues.

serious question, but who is saying you hate niggers?

This whole playing-the-victim republicans have been doing recently is getting really tired and transparent. Freaking republicans have had unprecedented power over the past 8 years (and particularly the first 6 of those 8 years) yet they somehow continue to portray themselves as beleaguered. Ridiculous.

" What has surprised me this week in St. Paul is the sense of grievance that Republicans feel, or pretend to feel, at the cruel forces that are treating them in such a beastly manner. The news media are the principal villains. Having rallied around Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate, Republicans are outraged that anyone would ask whether a first-term Alaska governor, whose only other political experience was as a small-town mayor, is the right person for the job. Having announced that Sarah Palin’s unmarried 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, the McCain campaign is irate that anyone would write about this circumstance, much less ask further questions about it.

“Why hound the Palin family over such a private matter?” the campaign protests. Uh, maybe because you put out a press release?

Rather than having access to a socialized healthcare system you will get to keep a tiny fraction of extra taxes to continue scraping by and getting put massively into debt when you get leukemia

He's not. Nor did I ever claim he was.

All I'm saying is I get a big laugh off of the self-congratulatory types who think that working out entitles them.

btw, when you make random statements like that, it's typically indicative that you're losing your train of thought

who thinks that working out entitles them? you guys sure have a way with completely twisting someones words around

thats really your best answer when i ask why its fair that someone who is in good health has to pay for someone in poor health? thats the best you can do? no responsibility in this country anymore...always blame someone

Well you see with universal healthcare everyone would pay a bit more in taxes to be able to receive medical treatment early enough that serious conditions could be treated early and hopefully prevented rather than having to show up at the ER at the brink of death. Everyone would have access to this healthcare you see. And if you had private insurance you could get even more healthcare! So basically that is how Obama would at least start the process to making that aspect of life fair

You.

That statement implies that a person is irresponsible if they don't meet your criteria. This is what we call judgment of lifestyle, and further implies that you believe you are more entitled than others.

i'll put it in real simple terms so you quit mincing my words into something that suits your opinion

fuck paying 50% income tax to pay to wait in lines for healthcare and get told you have to wait til next year for your kidney transplant since the government allocation for the year has already been reached...that shit sounds all nice and dandy on the surface until you dig a little deeper

dont say i dont care about people because i dont want to fund everyone else's expenses when i choose to take some personal responsibility and pay for my own needs

its not 50 percent, i know its about 20 percent in france. That seems like a lot for a problem like a cold or the flu, but when you have cancer or another life threatening disease, its a lot different.

Also, stop acting like people with social healthcare are just waiting around in lines to get helped. Thats stupid.

This convention reminded me. I really like McCain. He seems like a good natured guy, which is surprising after what he's been through.
He also doesn't take himself too seriously. That's another thing I like about him. The RNC was very low key compared to the Democrats. I think that has a lot to do with McCain.

^^^You're not going to be paying anywhere near 50% taxes under Obama.

And Obama's proposed system is fairly different than what Canada has.

There is already a LONG waiting list for any kind of organ transplants, and transplants are done on the basis of likelihood of surviving (IOW not much would change on the transplant front).

So you are basically wrong on all counts in your little summary of what you think Obama is proposing.

I agree. Never said I didn't. I don't claim to know the solutions...yet.

I was simply intrigued by the comment you made in which you basically declared yourself more deserving of any healthcare program support system - be it private, social, or other in between.

Of course, this is a forum - if that was not your intent, I apologize for reading/interpretting it incorrectly - if that were the case, fully my bad.

moron, you're right. Obama's proposal would be much worse than Candada's because it provides people incentive to wait until they are sick to get health insurance (no one is forced to buy health insurance, but insurance companies cannot turn you down, so why pay when you're healthy).

This would likely lead to rising premiums, which would lead to more healthy people dumping their insurance policies, which would lead to even more health people dumping their insurance polcicies, etc.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/30/opinion/30krugman.html

Obama's policies are horrible.

Yeah okay.

Now...just curious as to how that meshes with McCain's final message tonight (is he your candidate of choice?):

"Nothing in life brings greater happiness than serving a cause that is greater than yourself."

Why is it that kids from wealthier families do better in school than other kids? They know they're going to inherit a lot of $$$ yet they still apply themselves anyway...? it's very likely because of the peace of mind the safety net their family provides them means they'll be more courageous in their endeavors, because they can't fail. I don't know how many poor people you associate with, but they don't like being poor, want better jobs, want better educations, and are actually hard workers, they just are too timid because if something bad happens, they are practically homeless.

Health care isn't an end in itself, it's a means to an end. No one WANTS to use health care, people hope they never need it. If you were talking about the gov. giving people nice cars or nice houses, those are ends, and those things do discourage ambition. Health care encourages people to not thinking about "what if i quit my job to go to school, but then get sick" and think more about "I can go to school and get a degree [and if I get sick I'm okay]".

Peace of mind is by far one of the best motivating mechanisms.

First, if you assume that people are naturally selfish and greedy, then why vote Republican at all? Isn't the basis of their policies that people would help others out on their own without the gov.? Secondly, the vast majority of people likely wouldn't try to game the system this way, because they would be too lazy to try and figure out how to do it. And thirdly, it's not clear that Obama's plan would even make this type of manipulation all that easy to do. That guy is making a huge assumption with that idea (and he's completely wrong for implying that Social Security is A-OK).

i'm not gonna rely on the government for that

the idea is, work, save, make preparations in case you do fall on hard times

now obviously there are people born with cancer...things that no amount of diet or exercise or anything will help...if you thought i was downplaying those people before, i apologize

but nobody seems to be calling for free healthcare for people with serious life threatening diseases...people seem to be calling for free healthcare for EVERYONE, including the people who dont have cancer, the people who can take care of themselves, etc

mrlebowski is the perfect example of most Obama supporters.

They assume Obama's plans actually will help people afford health insurance and that they are consistent with the concept that health care is a "right". I mean that's kinda sorta what he says in those lofty speeches right?

They don't really care enough to drill down and see that Obama's proposals are only about ACCESS to INSURANCE, not health care per se. And even then, Obama's proposals will only make insurance MORE EXPENSIVE (see previous post for details).
