I'd love to bitch some more about last night but considering it was the same crap we saw against Atlanta there's really nothing more to talk about... more of the same

yes, he's having a rough time. But to say NO EFFORT WHATSOEVER is fucking stupid. He had at least 4 chances that he just couldn't get in the net.

Well guys, at least we have this worriedness going on. Imagine if it was like the Florida Panthers. You suck dog shit for 10 years and you get used to it. Hell, they would trade their situation for ours in heartbeat.
I like to think of it like that, you know, at least we are better than the panthers 11/13/2008 2:27:45 PM |

http://blogs.newsobserver.com/decock/gleason-unhappy-with-himself-teammates
Quote : | "Tim Gleason’s brow was still streaming sweat, with no signs of stopping, when he sat down at his locker after a long, tough practice Thursday.
“That’s what happens when you suck,” the Hurricanes defenseman said. “Go ahead and write that down.”
Still, that’s not what had him steaming — it was the consecutive home losses to Atlanta (5-2 on Sunday) and Washington (5-1 on Wednesday).
Although Gleason may not wear a letter for this team, he’s still part of the leadership group in the dressing room, and he had plenty to say about the team’s plight Thursday — plenty:
“Starting from myself, I was terrible,” Gleason said. “As a group, we have the character, we have the team in this locker room. There’s no excuses. We have none. We have pretty much a healthy lineup. We didn’t come prepared to play. That was a big game for us, a divisional game. I made a stupid play right off the bat and that hurt us. I know I have to be better.
“We have a lot of leaders in this room and we have to start leading. We have the guys to do it and it starts with me and I have no problem doing that. We do the talk, we’ve got to do the walk, pretty much. We have the guys in this room. We have the talent, we have guys that will work hard, we have the grinders, we have the players, we have the goaltending, we have the defense, the forwards.
“This team is built around a character type of atmosphere and environment. All 23 of us every day come to the rink. We’re all buddies in this room. There’s no excuses. We have the guys to do it. We have the determination in this room. There’s no excuse not to come out with two points. We went through a hard workout today which was well deserved because we stunk yesterday and we stunk (against) Atlanta.
“I could talk to you all night, all day about this, but we’ve got a chance to get two points tomorrow night and get things back rolling on a positive note and get a few wins under our belt.”
The Canes were still in the Eastern Conference’s top eight Thursday morning — just barely — but they’re on pace for 92 points, the same number that wasn’t good enough to get them into the playoffs last season.
And don’t think they don’t remember that.
“This is exactly what happened last year,” Gleason said. “We started off with a pretty good start and we stunk it up in November and December, and that’s what killed us in April. We don’t want to do that. There are signs of that coming right now and we’ve had a few games where we’ve kind of (given) away the points.
“It starts with myself and goes on up. I take all the blame in the world, especially for yesterday’s game. As a group, we have to contribute. Everybody has their own job to do and if we stick to our own jobs and be consistent in our own jobs, we’re going to be a heck of a team. There’s no reason for any changes around here because it’s a solid group. I’ve never been around a more solid group than this group.
“We have the guys in place, from the coaching staff on down. This is a tight-knit group and there are no excuses why we can’t move forward in a positive way, in a positive manner, and get the two points every night.”" |

Staal may have had at least 4 chances of scoring but that has NOTHING to do with the amount of effort he is putting forth when 3 of them came on a 5 on 3 powerplay where he was standing IDLE in front of the net completely missing on 2 of them and then firing the 3rd over the net. Scoring chances doesn't necessarily have to do with effort.
Not skating back on defense does. If you watched the game there was a play where Staal had a scoring chance, didn't work out, got down on himself and slowly skated back on defense (which gives him too much credit it was more of a crawl). Ray Whitney stole a pass in OUR defensive end and then saw Staal so sent him a pass for a potential breakaway or at least an odd man advantage. Staal was STILL in the offensive zone and the play was called offsides.
So let's recap... a scoring chance, pure laziness, Capitals are rushing the play and creating offense in our zone, Whit steals, Staal is not only not helping out on defense but it STILL in the offensive zone, offsides, crowd boo's, everyone's pissed.
So I stand by my comment. No effort from the future captain who I happen to be a big fan of. But facts are facts. 11/13/2008 10:07:27 PM |

And another note I don't wanna talk about Staal leading the league in shots. That's a horrible statistic to base an argument around. Nearly all of Staals shots during times where he's struggling like this are horrible.
He streaks through the neutral zone right up center ice, crosses the blue line and takes a wrist shot through 2 bodies that the goalie bats to the side and then the defense collapses on and clear out of the zone. He does it at least 5 times a game. It's even worse than dump and chase because it gives the opposing team direct possession. 11/13/2008 10:10:46 PM |

Staal's recent play has reminded me a bit of all those prima donna strikers in soccer I hated playing with. They'd streak to the goal, fall over, flop around on the ground for a while, and then start to walk back to the action. Meanwhile, I'm busting my ass in the midfield, fighting tooth and nail for possession of the ball. When I'd get it, I'd look up to get a pass to the striker, but he's still dicking around in an offside position. And then he'd get pissy when I wouldn't pass it to him. I'm waiting for him to sprint back to an onside position, and he's waiting for me to pass it to him, and in the meantime I get my pocket picked. And then he makes a whiny face at me and takes my refusal to pass as reason to try even less next time.
That's kind of how I characterize his play recently. 11/13/2008 11:57:44 PM |

When your team is struggling, your leader is suppose to pick you up. Staal was blowing it before the team was slumping. He really isn't trying.

This is another problem I have. If you watch Eric Staal back when he had a 100 points, he didn't just shoot. He tried to split the D or make a move or make something happen. Now all he does is shoot it and kind of skate off of the puck. There is a reason when he did this that his point production came down.

Just now read this after I made my post, but it's pretty much what I was trying to get across. It's so easy when you watch clips of Staal's goals to see what year they are from.

This is in no way a reflection of my opinion on Staal's effort, but I think the 100 point season was a product of the post lockout season and I have doubts that he will ever hit triple digits again. 11/14/2008 4:35:38 PM |
