Yeah, it's legally wrong to pull the flag of that truck, but what's legal, and what's right, aren't always the same.

Part of the expectation of the government taking a firm stand against the flag, is that this tends to lead societal viewpoints down the same path.

Just think about the civil rights era... the government can stop doing all the racists things it does, but this doesn't necessarily mean individuals will stop being racists. But when the broader trends of society are anti-racist, this causes people to subtly start believing in this goal, kids are raised with this ethical standard, etc., until old kinds of overt racism are seeing as disgusting and heinous.

So yeah, it is your right to be racist and wave a rebel flag, but as time goes on, it will become more socially unacceptable to do this, until it's really just the fringe extremists still doing it.

Another human tendency is that people want to do what they're told they can't do. I saw some pickup truck today flying the confederate flag today (like a flag on a pole, not a bumper sticker), and my hunch was that the driver probably put it up just because of all the controversy and people saying how bad the flag is.

I don't see why flip flopping is always a bad thing. Sometimes after doing research, talking to people, or from experience your viewpoints change. I used to have no issue with fracking but after learning more about the process and the data regarding health issues over time from people living nearby I'm now against the process.

Maybe the governor decided appeasing the African American community and not having riots about the flag was more important then keeping some rednecks happy.
