buying wedding presents:
Scenario 1: You stick strictly to the registry, and knowingly buy an overpriced, subpar gift.

Scenario 2: You stray from the registry, and try to guess at their priorities/preferences.

If the lady of the pair weren't so ...particular, it'd be so much easier to pick out a tent for them. As it is, I'm afraid she's gonna be all OMG ITS NOT A FOUR-PERSON TENT/DOESNT HAVE THAT SHADE-MAKING PROJECTION IM GONNA DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE OUT HERE.

Fuck it. Dishtowels it is. I guess

^^^ I don't like to stray from the registry because I've heard couples mention that people gave them things that they already had or really didn't need because they strayed from the registry.

If you must stray from the registry, I recommend getting them a small item from the registry, paired with a gift certificate to a nice restaurant they like or tickets to a show they'd like. It's nice to give a new couple an excuse to take a date night after they drop loads of $$$ on a wedding.

FIRST WORLD PROBLEM: I overbaked myself on the boat this weekend and now my shoulders are peeling.

why don't people just register for the shit they want? there's no requirement that you ask for towels or a blender or dishware. we asked for sleeping mats, roof racks, camping stuff, etc.

^^ My point is that people DO register for the stuff they want. Maybe people want or need dishtowels.

i had a friend register for shit like a pizza slicer and an ice cream scoop for a wedding (a bunch of small kitchen utensils basically). i mean, damn dude, register for shit you wouldnt normally just walk into target and buy on a random saturday. it was kind of repulsive actually.

Our wedding registry had all the expected things: towels, dishes, picture frames, etc. Plus diapers and baby wipes. That went over well with Grandma's church group

lol
I asked the bride's input before straying. She was fine with it.

Their target registry (the only one I bothered to look for) was very bare. It was easy to tell they spent 15 minutes in the store with a scanner.
Make a shitty registry, risk getting shitty gifts
Aaaaaaaaaand, the way I see it? You get duplicate gifts and/or shit you don't want? Return it for cash. Everyone knows to include a gift receipt these days (doing it, however, is another story, but I, for one, always do.)

I ended choosing this: http://www.rei.com/product/731378

My suspicion is that the camping gear is on the registry for him (he's military); odds are, she's neutral about camping (if she's ever even been), and I really don't want to see her put off because of a shitty tent. I also didn't want to break the bank trying to get them a tent that's a good one, with but the traits of the one on the registry.

I'm going to an open bar, free food, media-only pre-opening party for a new bar tonight. It should be fun, but I have to wear cocktail attire and I have absolutely no motivation to change out of my pool clothes.

Shoes, I feel ya there. Aruba for both?

I just got back from a free trip to Costa Rica and next month I have a free trip to the Bahamas, but I'm bummed bc I'd rather go somewhere new, like Peru or Greece.

it's a little chilly today and it's going to be even colder when we get out on the water this afternoon for sailing practice with the offshore team.

also, i hate how new deck shoes look super clean - it's embarrassing to have new gear that's not broken in yet

Yup, that's what I decided to get. Landshark logo, sans words. I've been pretty set on it for a couple years now, and since I haven't changed my mind in that long I think it's safe to go ahead and brand myself without fear of regret.
