One thing I wonder about (not saying it happened here) but if you had a huge rivalry between boise and vt to the point where they hated each other then after they got their season ruined by boise and trash talk was exchanged vt could be like "ok. we'll show them. we'll lose the rest of our non conf games and end up in a better bowl than them"
