I realize this thread is about those who have started their own weightloss program.... which I have not...or whatever.
me in feb (roughly 185 lbs):
me last weekend at the beach (roughly 175 lbs):
only thing i really changed to my overall health/fitness routine was my diet. eating less and better. that and not lifting as much lately because i got a little lazy about it lately and ultimately enjoy running and cardio sports more.

The general idea is that if you eat many small meals throughout the course of the day (like every 3 hours or so), your metabolism will keep churning.
Now, how that applies to eating 3800 calories a day, I have no idea, unless you're going on the "it'll help me build muscle and muscle burns more calories" concept. 6/4/2010 10:52:27 AM |

I do know that eating less and running a lot does not work for me
so I'm giving this diet a try and going back to lifting more often 6/4/2010 11:00:16 AM |

For lunch I went to Panera... I had the new strawberry chicken poppy seed salad (w/ low fat chicken soup and a whole wheat baguette) and it was ahhhhh-maaaaazing chicken, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, oranges, pecans, and (reduced fat, lower sugar) poppyseed dressing
Oh ps... idk what the F I did to my right lower back or my R hamstring but both are incredibly tight 6/4/2010 12:23:14 PM |

there is actually no direct correlation between meal sizes/amounts to metabolism

so, am I thinking right here?
the body is like a furnace, so food is fuel for that furnace
at 214 lbs, a personal trainer and http://www.livestrong.com told me to eat ~3078 calories to lose 2 lbs. per week.
And if I worked out that day, I need to eat those calories, too?
what happens if I only eat 2800 calories per day AND work out ~1000 calories?
does my body think it's starving because I'm back down to only 1800 calories? 6/4/2010 12:43:25 PM |

any tips on making my arms smaller? I know that may sound like a silly question but I have a feeling the answer will be just to continue to lose weight and see how it turns out..

^^it's a little more complicated than that...I think you'd be just fine doing what you stated though
I tend not to use too much cardio for weight loss, however, since I'm already eating less and anything outside of my typical weightlifting seems annoying.
3 days of weight + 2 days of interval training + caloric deficit should be enough to lose weight/maintain muscle
^ sadly, you must continue to lose weight....make sure you're also doing proper arm work (and when I say this, I personally mean heavy chin-ups and dips and presses)

i certainly wasnt complaining at 185, but i really enjoy feeling and looking thinner and more lithe than "muscular". i have certainly lost some muscle mass in the past couple months from a lack of lifting at all beyond body weight exercises, but ive also lost stored body fat around my torso that allows a lot more definition to show.
also if anyone is curious as to the backstory of the first pic, it was a white trash xmas party (think REK) and i wore a flannel plaid onesie with cutoff sleeves. was going to do cut off legs too but it was too cold out. i was taking it off because i thought we were going out, but we werent so i had to put it back on.

even though there is no correlation between meal frequency and metabolism isn't it still advisable to eat frequent small meals through the course of the day?
for overweight people, wouldn't eating frequently have the psychological benefit of feeling full leading to less calorie consumption over the entire day by consuming less at each sitting?
conversely, it can be challenging to consume 3500-4500 clean calories per day. wouldnt eating frequently also help someone wanting that many calories to achieve that goal?6/4/2010 1:10:39 PM |

psychologically, yes.
but we weren't talking about that.

I have to eat every 3 hours just to get the amount of calories. So yeah that part of what you mentioned is true. I have not been hungry in weeks so I imagine the first part is valid as well. 6/4/2010 1:13:29 PM |

i really only eat 2 meals a day. i usually eat a packet of quaker instant oatmeal (maple and brown sugar) around 0630 before i go running, and then for lunch i have a salad or a sandwich from the potbellys across the street. usually chicken salad on either. for dinner i usually don't eat big at all. maybe 2 times a week ill eat a small serving of protein (no homo) like chicken, along with some stirfried or steamed vegetables, and maybe a little rice or quinoa. but again thats only 2 times a week tops. if anything ill have a small snack like a handful of mini peanut butter pretzel sandwiches. usually in teh evening all i do is drink a couple diet sodas or some water. and that's with running 20-30 miles a week and playing squash 2 or 3 times a week. 6/4/2010 1:20:01 PM |

just wanted to make sure people weren't going to draw the conclusion that they might as well not eat often because it doesnt affect their metabolism. when, its still a great idea to eat frequent small meals through the day.
plus h8r and quinn were talking about it being difficult to get in their calories on workout days on page 17.

unlike with carbs and fats, your body has no means of storing protein once your stomach digests it. If you're trying to provide your body with sufficient amino acids for muscle growth, you should eat often enough to always have protein available in your system.
Personally, I find eating numerous meals while dieting to be counterproductive. If you switch your protein choices to slower digesting proteins, you don't have to constantly eat. Steak and chicken are much better choices than whey and eggs since they take longer to digest.6/4/2010 1:25:49 PM |

I can't say that I'm eating shitty, but I just haven't been eating... I haven't had like 60g of protein for the past 2 days (everything else has been at about 50% of my DV). My gym membership expired and this is the week of graduation/awards night, etc., so I've been extremely busy and haven't found time to go to a new gym (I'm going to go with a friend who is also doing NROTC). I'm hoping to start over tomorrow and go to the gym; hopefully I don't ruin my diet with festivities. 6/4/2010 2:39:01 PM |

Yes. When I switch up my routine, especially legs, I still feel DOMS up to 48 hrs post workout pretty regularly. I wouldn't worry about it. You'll know if it's an injury vs. soreness!
** Oh, but I usually feel it pretty good the day after too, so that probably doesn't help.

just make sure you realize that DOMS does not necessarily mean you had a good workout
in other words, if you added weight to the bar or did an extra set, but aren't sore the next day or 2, don't worry about it. 6/4/2010 5:32:28 PM |

I love the feeling of DOMS. When I used to workout, I would be sore the following day, but not much, then when I woke up the 2nd morning after the workout, bam, I was dead with soreness, but I LOVED IT!
And it lasted for another 2-3 days AFTER the 2nd day (i.e., total of 4-5 days). A couple of times when I had been off from lifting and got back into it, the soreness lasted exactly 7 days after leg day!!!
My favorite parts for soreness:
Glutes (the best!!!) Hamstrings Pecs Triceps Abs Obliques

i started my rotation this week and out of 8 hours a day, im lucky to be sitting or even just standing still for 3 of those hours. until thursday i was standing walking around the pharmacy for 6 hours. (one for lunch and one verifying and requesting refills) my legs have been super sore (the whole leg!) since i started i know that it's because i'm very used to being on my feet for that long but i think the shoes may be adding a little.....ooomph 6/4/2010 7:25:53 PM |

Sodium intake looks insane today. Mostly because I ate a couple sandwiches with a bunch of deli sliced turkey. On the good side I did get my protein and fiber up some.
