Our talent and depth at DE took a big hit this year. We lost Akinniyi, Lemon, and Augustin (all seniors). If we're so bad at DE that Frandsden can come in and win the starting job immediately, then I'm highly concerned. We need Cato-Bishop to recover quickly from his injury.
Also, props to Byrd for coming back strong and winning the starting CB job. Sucks for Wilson that he got bumped down. I remember in '09 when he won the starting job over incumbent DeAndre Morgan as a redshirt freshman. 7/22/2011 12:20:55 PM |

^ once Rashard Smith gets out on the practice field, he may knock Byers off the two-deep as well. This year, our 2nd-ary may actually be good enough that we get more coverage sacks. Also remember, Frandsen is a beast, he was no chump when he got here.

Quote : | "New faces, closing games all the talk in Wolfpack camp
He is listed as 6-foot-6, 225 pounds. He is a graduate student who saw the field just three times last season and only 10 times in his college career. In 2011 he will be tasked to take over the lead role for North Carolina State University.
Even though 11 of the 12 teams in the ACC will have new starting quarterbacks from a season ago, Mike Glennon may be the most discussed. At the ACC Football Kickoff in Pinehurst, N.C., he was the topic of multiple questions for the Wolfpack player representatives.
“I definitely think Mike’s got think skin,” said senior tight end George Bryan. “He’s definitely focused on what he needs to be focused on and doesn’t let anything else bother him.”
In addition to complementing Glennon’s focus, Bryan touted his leadership and work ethic.
”I like the way Mike has come in and been a leader of our offense,” Bryan said. “He commands respect in the huddle and that’s a key thing for a quarterback to have. Everybody basically (wants) to be a follower behind him because he’s the guy that gets everything started on the offense. He’s proved himself on the field because he has great talent and is a hard worker.”
To Glennon’s benefit, he was a very highly regarded recruit coming out of high school and has been able to learn from his older brother Sean who was named MVP of the 2007 ACC Championship Game as the quarterback of Virginia Tech.
“I definitely think Mike’s probably learned from his brother,” Bryan said. “I think he just came from a good football friendly family and he’s definitely a smart player. He knows what he’s doing and he has all the tools to be a great player.” ?
NC State players also recognize that you can’t win without a defense, though. After the departure of Nate Irving to the NFL, senior Audie Cole is getting a position change and being called upon to fill the linebacker void.
“Losing Nate, he was a great player, but I mean that’s how college goes, you only get four years,” Cole said. “Coach (Mike Archer, defensive coordinator) teaches the defense, all positions, so it was a pretty easy transition. I’ve only played it in spring practice, and you can’t simulate a game experience, so only time will tell.”
Another point of emphasis for the Wolfpack will be finishing games and winning the close ones. Three of the team’s four losses a season ago were by one score or less. Two of those they blew leads with less than seven minutes to play.
“We need to learn to put the game away instead of letting teams come back in,” Cole said. “If you put the game away, you don’t have to rely on luck.”
If Glennon can captain the offense, the defense can anchor itself and they can close games out, the NC State players say that this team has a chance of being really good.
“I definitely think that we have a pretty good shot, but I think the conference is very competitive, we never go against a bad team,” Bryan said. “The ultimate goal for everyone in the conference is to go to the ACC Championship.”" |

It pissed me off at the end of last year when he was healthy and not getting playing time in front of Washington in situations where we needed 2-3 yards. Haynes was the best RB going straight up the middle to get those few yards. Ugh.

More press on Glennon, this time from the Winston-Salem Journal. Not much new here, but some good stuff to see:
Quote : | " Glennon is usually the first player on the field at practices and one of the last off it. Bryan considers him one of the hardest working players in the program. Glennon is known to text teammates to get them together for seven-on-seven drills or to watch video.
Bryan is confident that Glennon already has earned the team's respect, despite being Wilson's understudy.
"He definitely proved himself to the team as soon as he got here," Bryan said. "He's no joke. He's a really good quarterback. He's a lot stronger now. I believe he's gained a couple of pounds. He definitely looks like he has."
Cole considers Glennon ready because of what he has seen in practice. Glennon's passes are almost always on target. Interceptions are nearly impossible, according to Cole, because Glennon doesn't force passes or rush decisions.
"Everyone's got respect for him, and everyone believes in him," Cole said. "So we're all ready to go with him this year."

I’m pumped for the entire defense, especially since it's their second year in the Tenuta scheme.
In the secondary, I think we’ll have the best set of safeties in the league. Bishop is as solid as they come, and Wolff seems like a star in the making – he was all over the place last year. The starting CBs have potential to be great ones too, as does Rashard Smith if he’s completely healed up. The depth here is good too.
At LB, Manning should be even beastlier this year as long as he stays healthy. I think Cole will actually be better on the inside than he was on the edge once he gets a little experience there. He's definitely got the size, speed, smarts, and instincts you want in a MLB ... though he's not the best open-field tackler. SLB should be a wild card. Sucks about EJ Carter, but the staff seems pretty high on DJ Green. He’s supposedly got good speed and cover skills, and he’s certainly got good height at 6'4. Seems a little lanky though (only listed as 215). We’ll see.
The line shouldn't be awful either. Our DT's should be pretty solid with Sweezy and Kuhn. DE looks weak as first glance, but Rieskamp has always been a sneaky-good end, and Fransden has a beast-like reputation. The depth seems pretty untested, but hopefully someone steps up.
Overall, pretty pumped about this entire unit. 7/25/2011 1:32:21 PM |
