Get ready to say good bye to Rivera. If he makes it another couple games I will be surprised.
Quote : | "it'd be pretty cool if we had a coaching staff who played to our QB's strengths" |
Agreed
Maybe others saw the game different, but to me it seemed Cam was looking for the deep throw a lot and frequently holds the ball to long. Maybe I am imagining things, but 1) it does not seem that there are any intermediate routes, and 2) they do a poor job of rolling Cam out and letting him play on the edge.

Panthers opening as dogs to the Vikes now, early line is MIN -2.
Things could get super ugly for Rivera if the Panthers lose next week, like fired midseason ugly.
Legit shot at landing a top 5 pick though, so at least there's that. 10/7/2013 7:01:03 AM |

Trying to turn Newton into a pocket passer is gonna be the end for this team. If you are gonna draft Newton you know the risks involved, but let him play how he needs to to win games. Yes, he will eventually get hurt just like RG3 and pretty much every other QB that runs, but thats his game. If you wanted a pocket passer then you should have drafted one! 10/7/2013 9:28:13 AM |

I'm worried about Cam. I think Rivera may have ruined him. He needed a lot of help coming into the league and he's basically gotten none. If he was on a team coached by Jim Harbaugh he'd be great but in our dumbshit organization he's still just raw materials.
I have a bad feeling we're going to hire a new coach with the requirement that he has to have a "plan for Cam" and we're going to waste another 3 years on that.

Newton is most definitely still fixable. Why not focus on getting some help at WR, you need at least 2. Smith is going to go downhill soon, I think you're starting to see signs of it now, and when he does it's going to happen fast. Small guys who rely on speed and leaping ability don't age particularly well.
Panthers should really be trying to get a couple of WRs, a RB, and a coach. Newton isn't the problem, the offense and the philosophy are the problem. Oh, and the secondary is pretty bad, which is a shame because the front 7 is awesome. 10/7/2013 12:18:42 PM |

We have a bad o line and below avg wr. Cam is the lone bright spot on offense. Not sure why hes getting the blame.
He didnt have a good game yesterday but it wasn't terrible or anything.
We are not scoring nearly enough points for how many drives we have put together this season.
Id pin most of that on our playcalling, oline, and the fact we dont have any great red zone targets.
We need to get back to our 2 TE sets which means finding another athletic te. 10/7/2013 1:00:58 PM |

well cam's 26th in passing yards (pg), slightly below 30th in completion percentage, and around the same for passer rating,
I'd like to see what cam can do with better receivers and prob a better Off coordinator, so I'm not calling him delhomme at this point but I hope we don't splurge and offer him a mega contract either
and there may be a trend starting to develop now with qbs that rely on their athleticism hitting a wall after their first yrs

All I'm going to say is that it's amazing what a head coach can do. I'm a KC fan, and the difference between that team under Reid and that team under Crennel is night and day. Alex Smith is putting up about the most mediocre QB play you can imagine, but the execution on both sides of the ball is lightyears ahead of where it was, and the players don't look lost out there.
Firing Rivera and replacing him with an NFL caliber coach would probably be worth 4 wins by itself. 10/7/2013 1:32:49 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148441 Posts user info edit post |
I wish Cam would learn to throw receivers open. He seems to have that Pete Thomas mentality of waiting for the receiver to be open before throwing instead of anticipating when they'll be open. He did it on the first drive but not much afterwards. I wonder if since teams usually plan out their whole first drive, or at least their first 10-15 offensive plays, he really got a feel for those, but then once Shula started calling plays the rest of the game he just couldn't keep up.
And even though Smith had the dropped TD yesterday and Lafell the dropped 4th down conversion, both very costly plays that weren't Cam's fault, we still have the best WR trio we've had since Smith/Moose/Proehl. Even Jake Delhomme took that bunch to the playoffs a couple times. 10/7/2013 1:38:43 PM |

Man, I'd take those Delhomme/Fox teams back in a second.
I didn't appreciate the success they had nearly enough while it was happening.

That type of turnaround gives me hope that, given the right hire, we can improve by leaps and bounds next season.

It helps when your team has talent. The Chiefs had 6 pro bowlers in 2013, that's how shitty the coaching was. By contrast the Panthers had none. This year I think it's pretty likely that they have at least 2, but even without a wealth of pro bowlers there is still clearly talent on the defensive side of the ball and a couple of good offensive players. Newton and Olsen are nice, Smith is still a WR1 on almost any team, so there is something to work with. 10/7/2013 1:54:33 PM |

an even better example than the Chiefs is the 49ers dumping Singletary and hiring Harbaugh, who took almost the same roster to the Super Bowl 10/7/2013 2:00:55 PM |

those were just as tragic. lot of end of game field goals. monster runner game. too many miracle plays that came back to bite us in the end. delhomme hitting the dirt if he couldnt throw up a prayer. team playing over their heads to get put out by a way superior team in the playoffs. revisionist history

while the current regime sucks, fuck those fox/delhomme teams. only 3 playoff berths, 1 super bowl, and 1 ass whipping at home as a #2 seed by the fucking cardinals. so much wasted talent, terrible coaching, etc. nothing sticks worse (besides getting Kasay'd in the Super Bowl) than the 2004 season where they started 1-7, came back to 7-8, and lost to the fucking saints in a "win in you're in" game. 10/7/2013 4:18:40 PM |

no lie I would take a superbowl run any day. but we had Stepen davis as a running back. stud. a bowling ball down the field. top 5 defense. and delhomey just throwing the ball super long down the field like he was Brett Favre lite.
our receivers can't run routes. o line is better than before and still terrible. cam isn't accurate enough. front 7 is good but are on the field too long. secondary is still swiss cheese.
pretty much the same team I ve been looking at for years. doesn't surprise me.

The first couple of drives were clearly scripted before the game, and they looked sharp and crisp, they were almost perfect other than the drops. But after he ran out of scripted plays he has no idea what he's doing. 10/7/2013 11:16:34 PM |

cam is an ok to good qb 80% of the game but he sucks balls when the chips are on the line and he has to stand in the pocket and complete passes to win us games. i blame the vast majority of the 2-14 close game record on rivera but cam has to own some of that as well 10/8/2013 12:21:46 AM |
