they were too close for any of that, he was approaching them and was close so they had to shoot him. if someone is within 15' they are going to be able to reach you and can hurt you even while you are shooting them, you can see that this guy even ended up at the feet of one of the officers despite moving fairly slowly and receiving multiple gunshots. if they had waited and the guy had charged he easily could have injured the officer.

i think this shooting is clearly justified, but that doesn't mean its not a problem. we are increasingly using LEOs (and the criminal justice system) as front-line staff for people with mental health issues but are providing little training and few resources to help them cope. it was obvious that this guy was looking for a confrontation with cops or suicide by cops, they should have stopped further away from the guy so that they would have had more of an opportunity to use less-lethal options or to just wait and try to start a dialogue.

I agree it was justified, but the cops didn't seem to give a second thought to killing a mentally disturbed man when most likely they could have easily subdued him otherwise. And considering all the stories of them killing mentally ill patients who weren't begging to be killed, it would be nice if they at least attempted to expend some amount of effort to help people.

Sure, this is a pragmatic and reasonable position. Look at how the tone has changed over the course of a few weeks, though. The consensus went from "racist cop executes innocent, unarmed teen in cold blood" to "possibly incompetent cop kills a violent criminal, likely during/after an altercation".

If you find a person on the street and tell them, verbatim, "a white cop somewhere shot and killed an unarmed black teen", aren't they going to assume that it was some kind of brutal, racially motivated killing? A good percentage of people won't even learn anything more about the story, they'll just keep asserting their own assumptions about the incident.

This is more or less what happened in the Trayvon Martin case. Media pollutes public discourse by pushing out short, light on context headlines because it stirs up controversy, and controversy is profitable.

Even if the news media wasn't trying to stir up controversy, stories like this would eventually make their way out through social media. And as bad as the major news outlets are, at least there is some filtering and decorum that they use. With social media there is no filtering, and now, news outlets will never be able to get out in front of social media and report just the facts.

This whole thing was botched from the start by the Ferguson police and those reporting on it.

I think the shooting of Brown potentially could have been justified, but warrants an investigation.
I think the knife wielding guy shooting was justified, but could have been handled differently, however, the cops had less than a second to react, so it's easy to armchair quaterback it.

I think the militarization of small town police forces is a fucking joke, and think money should be spent on training in high stress situations/confrontation tactics/etc would be so much money than giving every cop full on riot gear.

I've seen this 2x on my facebook so far, which is the same amount of times I've seen anything about brown (and 1 brown thing was pro police).

One person started their comment "I don't normally like rush but..."

And these are college educated middle class white people who own houses and have jobs, and who I know have done very illegal things yet never have faced any real consequences. it fits into recent studies demonstrating conservatives like simplified models and snap judgements, but it seems like just a basic grasp of a few statistics would make you relaize how full of crap rush is.
