I could see a little ACC tourney run from this team with a steady diet of Seabron driving to the bucket and either shooting a shot, or kicking it out to Terq for the outside shot. 2/2/2022 10:45:53 PM |

Yeah having Allen and Morsell on the floor together led to some spurts of good defense.
Not sure Hayes should play anything more than spot minutes at this point. The ball just sticks in his hands on offense. He's broken and i don't know if it's fixable. 2/2/2022 11:03:54 PM |

Foul trouble in first half for Hellems. KK is pretty strict about sitting a guy as soon as he picks up 2 first half fouls. It’s not always the right decision.
Seemed like at the time I thought he didn’t play well in his limited time in the second half but honestly I can’t remember specifics. 2/3/2022 11:25:00 AM |

It's weird to me that he will be pretty consistent with the minutes (albeit diminishing) for a guy like Hayes who has been awful since November, but he benches Seabron and Hellems for entire second halves when they are struggling. 2/3/2022 12:35:11 PM |

Yeah Hayes has definitely had his minutes cut way back.
Last night our most effective lineup was Seabron, Allen, Morsell, Smith and Gibson and that's who played in the second half when we made a game of it 2/3/2022 1:01:09 PM |

Healthier bigs would definitely make our defense better. It would make our entire team better. I know nobody likes excuses but I don’t see how you can think our team wouldn’t be better with a stable of 4-5 big men available vs 1-2 big men. Especially when the only one currently healthy is pretty clearly the worst of them all.
I feel like Bates has to be worth at least 4 more wins at this point? I don’t think we’re a top 25 team with him. But it’s obviously been a major loss

251 is atrocious. But why does it not matter if 4/5 big men are injured? At some point the injuries do actually have an impact. If we were just talking about Gantt and Ross being injured then I think it would be fair to brush that aside as an invalid excuse. But we’re talking about Bates and Ebe too. That all has to count for something. Is it the only reason we suck? No. Is it a contributing factor? Definitely seems like it.
Nobody is arguing that Bates would solve all our problems. But he would definitely solve some of the problems.2/3/2022 4:00:29 PM |

That was definitely not backcourt on ND so it was the right call for them to change it. But I feel like I’ve seen more over turned calls this year on plays that can’t be (or aren’t) reviewed. Like, the refs just talk it over and change it. Which is fine if they get it right, just something that seems to be happening a lot more than usual. They don’t go to the monitor to review or anything. They just go to commercial and we come back and it’s a different call. 2/5/2022 3:47:29 PM |

Hellems was awful for the 2nd straight game. Seabron was bad and looks like he has run out of gas. Allen didn’t really do anything either. Cam had a small run in the 2nd half where he looked good for once but then went back at the end of the game to awful looking threes. Not sure why Pass didn’t get a few more minutes, maybe since Hayes hit a few shots. 2/5/2022 11:01:46 PM |

Keatts isn't a good coach IMO, not at NCSU and an ACC school anyways.
Syracuse showed other coaches all you have to do to stop seabron is to run a zone. They even switched to a 1-3-1 to stop baby T and it worked. Keatts had no answer.
Hellems is a catch and shoot only player. He has really been horrific this year. Still makes boneheaded plays like he did as a freshman. Turnover machine. Hayes has not developed. CM is a spot shooter. NONE of them play defense, especially against the 3.
The small lineup works well but when you only play an AAU isolation offense, you aren't going to get much when they shut down your go to guy. T
I just dont see any reason why keeping keatts is a viable option. What has he done that warrants keeping him? his best win is Arizona? Duke? less than a handful of good wins in 5 years.
Kut Keatts.

Hellems is limited but he’s definitely not been horrific this year. And he averages 1.6 turnovers/game. I wouldn’t call him a turnover machine at all. Hellems is a pretty good #3 option on the team. The problem is we don’t have any options outside of the top 3 that are remotely consistent so the pressure is on him (and T and Seabron) to be on every single night. On a better team, your #3 option could be afforded a few off nights because somebody else would step up.
I actually think morsell has shown a good ability to drive and get to the rim…more than just a catch and shoot jumper. Wish he’d be even more aggressive. He was hampered with an ankle injury earlier but I think as he’s gotten healthy he’s looked more well rounded. But still, he’s a solid piece not a #1 option or anything.
Quote : | "

This will be his first season with a losing ACC record. I do feel like that counts for something. He is very very close to making 3 of 4 NCAAs prior to this year. One year was canceled due to Covid and the other year we had a really high NET ranking and got snubbed. Being on the bubble isn’t great, but he’s one or two breaks from having a much better resume. For comparison, Gott maybe got lucky a year or two in making the NCAA as a super bubbly team, KK didn’t get lucky. Those slim margins get coaches fired though.
The argument for giving him another year is that he’s had some shitty luck and probably deserves a chance to build a class (including transfers) without the NCAA cloud lingering over his head. I’m not overly enthused with the results from Keatts so far. But I think it’s perfectly fair to give him another season.
Quote : | " his best win is Arizona? Duke?" |
By my count he’s beaten 5 top 10 teams (Arizona, Duke x2, UNC, Auburn).
If we fire Keatts we’re gonna go hire another mid major guy and that’ll be total crapshoot. It’s not like there’s a slam dunk hire out there that will definitely come anyways.

Opposing coaches have figured him out.
Put a good defensive player on him and don't let him drive. That's it. He can't do anything against a zone either since he isn't a good shooter. Wake just let him do the scoring and shut down everyone else for NCSU, the old DSJ tactic. One player in double digits scoring. 11 turnovers on 12 assists.
This season is over. Maybe one Win left on the schedule.

Did wake really “shut everything else down” or did they just dare us to beat them from 3? Hellems and T were cold but appeared to get some good looks. Obviously that’s a good tactic. We’ll have hot shooting games because T and Hellems and even Morsell are good shooters. But we won’t have great shooting games every night.
I’m not making the excuse that we simply didn’t make enough shots…. Because I think we have personnel issues that clearly make the “slow Seabron and dare the rest of the team to beat you” a good strategy. And our D sucks. So it’s hard to win games unless we’re hot shooting. And I think Keatts deserves blame. I just kinda think we’re giving Wake too much credit…it wasn’t an overly suffocating defense from them necessarily. 2/10/2022 8:38:08 AM |

Nah, just stating the obvious. The season was over when they lost to Wright State at home.
Keatts lack of substitutions last note should be noted. As mentioned, he didn't take out Hayes who clearly struggled when Baby T was out with foul trouble. Hayes is by far the laziest defensive player on the team. I can't blame Pass if he transfers.
You may think you're giving Wake too much credit but there is a reason they are a ten win ACC team. They play collectively, pass the ball well and defend their positions. They're really well rounded...and they're obviously coached better.
Hellems had looks, they weren't good looks. Again, he turned the ball over trying to dribble too much and make stupid plays. Had terrible shot selection like he normally does and got some of the worst fouls. He's so frustrating to watch, trying to do too much and outside of his skill set. Keatts keeps wanting to make him a 3 but out of necessity moved him to a stretch 4. He wouldn't start on many ACC teams.
The most irritating thing was Keatts finally made defensive scheme changes, but couldn't be bothered to notice that his offense was stuck in the mud and to try other players for extended periods.2/10/2022 10:04:46 AM |
natureboy All American 2803 Posts user info edit post |
Hellems has started a new thing lately where he is open for three but hesitates and pump fakes. Then the defender is on him and he finally shoots it and misses. Maybe his slump is messing with his head. 2/10/2022 10:31:56 AM |

I didn’t say wake was bad. Just that it’s probably an exaggeration to say that their defense was so great against us. I blame poor offensive output on us being a bad team, not necessarily a great game plan by Wake.
Losing sucks and is frustrating but I think people are too hard on Hellems. Hard for me to criticize a 39% 3PT shooter too much. He has flaws in his game, definitely not a perfect player. But I think the problem isnt that he’s not good enough. It’s that the supporting cast behind Seabron, Smith, Hellems isn’t good enough to make up for a bad game from one or more of the big 3.2/10/2022 11:46:19 AM |
