I didn't really get enough christmas cash to upgrade to 5D. I can't justify spending $2500 on a body only to have to replace all my lenses too. (I would sell them all and re-buy, but I would like to keep my XSi as a back-up camera.)
I think I'll go with the 7D instead so I can use the same lenses. Anyone had any experience with this body? The reviews I've read have been really good. I'm going to get my hands on one this week to test out, but any thoughts are appreciated...
EDIT: Oh, and Peace had a used Canon 85mm 1.2L when I was there the other day. $1500

^^ It is an SLR, it's just incorporated into a video camera type body. It accepts all current SLR lenses and takes 1080HD video as well as 14mp pics. It is bad ass for people like me who are more into video, but like a still picture option as well. 12/29/2010 12:54:24 AM |

Digital camera =/= digital SLR.
It looks like a nice prosumer level video camera, but it isn't an SLR. I'm sure it shoots rad video, but I can promise you it is cumbersome to take photos with, and the photos are almost certainly lacking. 12/29/2010 8:12:31 AM |

Some shots from my pre-Christmas trip to south Florida.
Of course, I was on an island and my camera battery was running out when I found this guy. Couldn't take flash pics because battery was so low, sucks the sun was getting very low at the time.
Finally got some halfway decent shots of these little guys.
I don't think I've ever found one of these before.
This was new to me. A Florida endemic skink.
Not an exciting find, but was cold enough to sit still.
Waiting for handouts.
Florida's own subspecies of green anole.
We obtained a permit to capture these guys, this one was roughly 10 feet and stretched out across a path on one of our hikes.
And this is possibly my favorite shot from the trip.

Not all digital single lens reflex cameras (SLR) have to be for still photos Ronny. Almost all pro video cameras use a single-lens reflex system.
That being said, we are thinking about getting an SLR, My girlfriend's sister is a pro and has a cannon D1 she said we could trade lenses if we get something that could share but i think the crop sensor is different between it and the regular (cheaper) Cannon line.
I really don't know where to start but i'd like more control over my pictures than a point and shoot. Please advise.12/29/2010 10:48:59 AM |

I never said that. I said that the afformentioned Sony was not an SLR, because it isn't. It is also not a pro video camera.
(By the way, no modern professional video camera uses a single-lens reflex.)
Also, I'll assume you're referring to a CANON 1D series. Any cheaper Canon you get will work with any of the lenses she has for a 1D series body. Prosumer bodies will work with EF or EF-S lenses, 1D bodies will only work with EF.

Top choice imo is going to be the Nikon D3100 for ~$590(http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D3100-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B003ZYF3LO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293674059&sr=8-1
It's has a lot of benefits over the Canon XSi which is the Canon competitor. A bit more ($700-800) will get you a Canon T2i which is pretty well lauded for picture quality. Personally, I won't touch another Canon Rebel body after the shutter in my T1i went out after less than 10k actuations and it's not a very rare occurrence. Sadly Canon doesn't put a lifetime on any of their Rebels (Nikon rates even the lowly D3000 at 100k) and you're shit out of luck if it fails out of warranty. For t2i money you should be able to find a nice used D90 (or less if you're patient and really watch CL) or Canon 50D. 12/29/2010 9:01:41 PM |

Photos I shot from my seat at the bowl game in Orlando, all I could manage to bring in was my EFS 55-250mm lens. I was in the lower section near the 20-yard line, about 20 rows up. These shots could've been much better if I had a longer reach (wish I could've brought in my 70-200 + 1.4x) but hey I was just there for fun. I know some of these could use some noise reduction but I am way too tired to go thru and PP them in more detail right now. Enjoy.
GO PACK!

Yeah.
When I first picked up the 7D after a couple of years shooting with the XSi I was like WAT.
The build quality is great.
The 8fps burst mode is great.
The video looks great. 12/30/2010 11:55:37 AM |

That's really the stuff I'm looking to hear. I am also upgrading from the XSi, so it's good to hear from someone else who upgraded from what I have to what I want.
Anything you can say about image quality comparing to XSi I would be interested in hearing. The ISO capability is obviously higher on the 7D, so how is the noise at higher ISOs? I've read good things about the AF capability. Any comments on that? Battery life? 12/30/2010 12:08:20 PM |

^ look at the football pics I posted above. i didnt do any noise reduction on those, just cropped. those were shot with the 55-250mm lens though since I couldnt bring any of my L lenses into the stadium.
as far as IQ goes, i think all you're really going to get is the higher ISO. you need to use some good glass to unlock the real potential of the 7D. but the AF is freaking FAST
i use 300x cards and i get about 20 continuous shots of FULL RAW @ 8fps before the buffer fills up.
battery life is pretty good, i think they can go for over 2k clicks but i have a couple of knock-off lp-e6's as spares so never really tested it

Well, I thought I'd get more cash for Christmas then I did, so I don't think I'm going full frame yet.
Plus, I want to keep the XSi as a backup, so I'd like something compatible with EFS lenses. (Joie wants it...) If I were only going to have one camera I would sell everything off and upgrade. Right now, unfortunately, it's not very economical.

Live View has no meter that shows on the screen and fstop changes arent showed in live view unless you switch back out and back into live view mode
Also, video mode does not allow you to change shutter speed or f-stop without stopping and restarting the video...wtf?
I was sold on the quality and feel of the Nikon but the above two points seem kind of like deal breakers.
Also...autofocus in video mode sucks ass and is noisy as hell 12/31/2010 3:07:31 PM |

indoor/outdoor transition....this is not an uncommon feature. Most every video camera has it. I think Nikon expects you to meter through the viewfinder etc before switching to live view
cannon allows real time metering and adjustments thru live view. guess it isn't important to some but seems like an important feature for video-centric device 12/31/2010 6:49:33 PM |

the 50mm f/1.8 doesn't autofocus on that camera. I'd chunk out the extra 60 bucks or whatever to get the 35mm f/1.8G lens. I have both because I didn't think it would make a huge difference cause I am a n00b and bought the 50mm but it is basically unusable unless you have time to focus, refocus, refocus and your subject doesn't move. From what I can tell the 35mm is just as good if not better from an image quality perspective but its just a lot easier to get good pictures when you're a n00bie needing autofocus like myself.
Edit: You could go with this if you absolutely need the 50mm lens: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-1-4G-Digital-Cameras/dp/B001GCVA0U/ref=sr_1_13?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1293909151&sr=1-13 :dreamy:
And the 35 f/1.8 is 199 at best buy IIRC. Check around because amazon was selling it for some company for 220.

I've found I am more than content backing up and moving forward to get the right frame. Screw zooms...who takes a picture sitting down anyways.
It's perfect for low light, portraits, and it's seriously fast. These things are all what LuvaLuva is looking for in a camera. The kit lens is pretty meh. I was not impressed when I had my D50. If it's updated by now I'm sure it's just a newer version of the same do-all-be-great-at-nothing lens.
I will say I was not aware that it didn't auto focus on that camera. I have only used it with my brothers D700.
