Have any canon people shot the 24-105 f/4L IS? What are you thoughts on it vs. the 24-70 f/2.8 as far as IQ goes? I'd like to have IS on the lower-end of the focal range and would prefer some L-quality glass. 3rd party vendor suggestions would be good too.

What's the big deal about IS? Why?

The 24-70 is a baller lens, and I'd take it over the 24-105 any day of the week, despite the fact that it doesn't have IS. I'd much rather have the extra stop.

Fuck all of that, though. Buy fast primes.

I'm another that's used the 24-105L but not the 24-70L. I loved it and most people agree that the IQ is pretty much a wash between the two unless you're on a 1D/5D. I did find myself wishing for the 24-70's f/2.8 a few times but overall I enjoyed having the extra range.

I had both the 24-105 f/4 IS L and 24-70 2.8 F/2.8 L and each have their own strengths and suitable tasks. The 24-70 was my first lens and had it for a long time and love the lens to death. It will always be my most used lens in my line up for general purpose shooting. It's sharp, 2.8, fast focus and a rock solid quality that I have used to smash in someone's face at a club with no ill effects to the lens or camera; maybe some blood cleanup.

The 24-105 is a different story since I only had it for about 3/4 of a year before I sold it since I got it in with a trade. I used it primarily for video work and it worked great. I wished I didn't sell it so fast so I could do more video work since the IS in both the 24-105 and 70-200 that I owned at the time was nice, but I couldn't justify having a $900 paper weight for video that I seldom used it for. Besides being one stop slower, it was just as sharp, if not sharper in some cases, and worked well as a general purpose/longer portrait lens. The lens is also lighter and much more compact to carry around than the 2lb 24-70, which is helpful if you need to over extend your arm while holding the camera to get a shot or video of something.

Even with the IS and longer range, I ended up just using the 24-70 more for general shooting than the 24-105. Still a big difference between 2.8 and 4, but if I started to do more video, I'd pick up the 24-105, but honestly, you really don't need L quality lens for HD video since the lens resolution of a cheapy IS lens would work like the 28-135 IS, if a cheap stable lens solution is what you are after. After that, you'd need to play around with steady cam systems, which are fun, but daymn I could build some of their stuff for cheap.

Not just not a bad deal. An incredible deal. I've been happy with my SB-600, but it will tear through some batteries like there's no tomorrow. Go ahead and buy a Costco pack of AA's to carry extras around with it.

That's good. Food photography is very difficult from what I hear. It is hard to light it without it looking flat, dry, bad, etc... Best of luck.

Yeah, Food photog is no joke. I think my assignment for that was a low B because it was just ok since I lost a bit of texture of the dessert and got some pretty real feedback from my instructor and another pro photog that was reviewing our project since he mostly did food/product photog.

Although, the best part about food photog is that you get to eat your props 60% of the time. You can't say that about shooting cars... unless its a full size Ferrari cake, which turned out to be an Acura Cake, for your sweet 16 Halloween party...

Looking for some lens advice...I am a total amateur, but am getting inspired by some of the shots in this thread. I mainly shoot candids for church youth group and retreats, but looking to get more artisitic. I shoot a Canon T2i, currently have a Tamron 28-300, and a Tamron 17-50 2.8.

I am ready for a new lens. I have been reading forums on these lenses, but wanted to get some feedback from the TWW crew.

Tokina 11-16 vs the Tamron 10-24

Canon 50, 1.8 vs 1.4

I am currrently on page 140 of this thread (late 2009) and am working my way through, just to see the shots and the comments. If these comparisons have been done, I just might not have gotten to the commens yet.

If you can afford the 1.4, it is leaps and bounds better than the 1.8. The 1.8 is certainly worth owning if you can't though.

Tokina 11-16, hands down. No question. Fuck the Tamron 10-24 variable aperture bullshit. The Tokina is a baller ass lens. Buy it.

that's so true. I stopped going to POTN because everyone was amazed and had a lot of love for pos images from the influx of n00bs. Might as well call it flicker with love. Then people get all mad at you when you speak your mind and give real cc. Never really got why ppl hate getting real cc so much. It's easy to spot flaming and real honest opinion, at least to me.

SEC doesn't have it, but you can look at lens rentals. Apparently they've revamped their website since the last time I visited. Used them before a few times with good results.

Yikes, didn't realize their shipping costs have risen. I guess they went all air shipping. I remember they had some partnerships with some camera shops, at least on the west coast, of where you can rent from them and return for a cheaper shipping cost or non at all.

just prepping for a fashion shoot tomorrow. Two designer friends are loaning me some of their stuff, should be cool, but apparently everyone who I'm working with were very timid in my 13 page production book, detailing the shot, location and sketches of poses I want.
