I love Fells but I'm not going to lie and say he was a great handler on the break. He wasn't good at breaking presses and he was pretty bad about handling on the break. I'd say 70% of his turnovers probably came from those two things. 2/22/2010 11:16:23 PM |

lol tke give it up man, everyone on this board watched fells the past few years. he wasnt a turnover machine but thats mainly because he didnt do much that would put the ball in danger. he didnt drive much or make dangerous passes trying to set people up, etc
every fast break that he went all out on there was a good chance he would dribble the ball off his knee or he'd sail it out of bounds trying to make an easy pass. and he was good for one of those awful passes where he throws it right to the other team on the perimeter giving them a free lay up AT LEAST once every other game
fwiw his TOrate last year was 18.7%. His replacement, Scott Wood, is at 16.5 as a freshman. And Wood handles the inbounding duties most of the time (part of the reason Costner avg'd a ton of TOs is because he sucked ass at inbounding)

Fells was the 2nd best player in Mississippi behind Monta Ellis in high school. Had a lot of potential, but I think his lack of improvement in his ball-handling led to his demise. I don't see how you can't significantly improve your ball-handling in 4 years of college basketball. Get a fucking ball-handling coach or something. 2/23/2010 11:14:05 AM |

State has not had any great ball handlers in a while. Honestly Atsur was about as good as we've had recently. Just off the top of my head:
1. Javi - okay 2. Mays - garbage 3. Degand - okay to garbage 4. Grant - garbage 5. Atsur - good 6. Bethel - okay to good 7. Grundy - okay 8. Gainey - okay 9. Archie - garbage 10. Ishua Benjamin - okay
I know I am forgetting some other guys who've routinely handled the ball for us in the recent years, but regardless Harrow will be a breathe of fresh air.

which is what I was getting at. He basically stood in a corner and never had to do anything high risk with the ball in our half court offense. No shit he wouldnt have a ton of turnovers. For the job he had he was still somewhat turnover prone, though. He doesn't compare favorably to Scott Wood, a freshman who in bounds the ball a great deal in the same offense. Look at other wings. Kyle Singler does more in the Duke offense and he protects the ball better. Shit, compare him to Rihards Kuksiks out in the desert if you want to look at a guy that's an upperclassman who mostly stands in a corner and shoots
Fells wasn't the problem last year, but he wasnt helping to solve it either2/23/2010 5:21:06 PM |

Fells was definitely not a good ballhandler or passer.
Atsur is being way overrated as a ball handler, he wasn't even a true PG. He had to dribble with his back to the basket to even get the ball into the frontcourt every possession. It usually took us 10-15 seconds to even set up the offense because his ballhandling was so weak.
Javi is a much better dribbler skillwise he just doesn't play very under control which makes him turnover prone. 2/23/2010 5:35:38 PM |

And he makes retarded fucking passes. If he eliminated the bone-headed mistakes (add those ill-advised pull up 3s), he'd be a more than adequate point guard.

Atsur actually was a decent ball handler...he was just severely over matched in athleticism...hence him dribbling with his back to the basket to get the ball up court. He was so valuable to us because he was a solid ball handler, made smart decisions, and usually hit the open jump shot. But he was never going to do anything extraordinary.
And Justin Gainey was the shit. If we knew how desolate we would be at the point guard years after he left, we would have treated him like a fucking king when he was here. Shit, the point guards we've had the past couple years make Cliff Crawford look fucking All-ACC.2/23/2010 6:40:57 PM |

Is this a joke? Archie Miller was a crappy role player. His job was to come in, stand around the 3 pt line on offense and hope someone got him the ball with room to shoot. On defense, he was so horribly bad that we basically were playing 4 on 5. Archie might as well have just stayed down on the offensive side of the court waiting for another 3 pt attempt than try to guard anyone.2/24/2010 8:09:45 AM |

Unappreciative fucker.
He was a really good role player for us and filled in admirably at the PG spot. He had physical limitations that didn't allow him to be a great defender. Although he was a cocky fucker, I feel bad for him because Harrington fucked his girlfriend with the amazing ass.2/24/2010 11:27:53 AM |

Physical limitations? He was slightly more athletic and a slightly better shooter than most of the 5'10" gym rats who fill up Carmichael on a nightly basis. He was essentially worthless on anything besides open 3's, foul shots and high fives. He was a point guard who averaged a whopping two assists a game. To make a case for him as anything more than a Will Roach-esque fan favorite is a complete failure to view his actual basketball contributions objectively. 2/24/2010 11:38:28 AM |

^^ bingo. I am surprised that there are people who actually have good memories of Archie. Outside of a good 3 pt stroke, he brought little to the team in terms of production on the floor.
