it's not a bad move
Statistics show that 2/3 of americans who come into large sums of money (mil or greater) are broke within 2 years. And not just broke as in lost what they won, but broke as in lost it all, home, everything.
its sad really and completely a result of poor money management.
If I won the WSOP, I'd get a lawyer or financial manager and secure my funds so I can't go blow it on a superjet. 7/18/2007 1:21:08 PM |

that' second article is very sad to read. I feel bad for all those people. So many wished that they had never won in the first place. How unfortunate.
The poker article is very true. I dont know why they didn't mention this, but Greg Raymer was a victim of a near kidnapping. While staying at a Las Vegas hotel, a couple men tried to kidnap him as he was going into his bedroom. He fortunately was able to free himself and scream loud enough in the hallways to scare them away and draw security, but man is that shit scary.
One consistent thing I've heard about big money winners is its not that the money changes you, but it changes everyone around you. Those who you thought were your friends no longer are your friends. They become leeches and try to take everything from you.
It's almost a certainty that if you win a large sum of money, keeping your dayjob, no matter how bad you like it, will be almost impossible. Especially if you work with people day in day out.
Really sad 7/18/2007 2:55:18 PM |

I just can't understand how a well educated and level headed person could throw away that much money. Granted a good majority of the people who win aren't educated or level headed.
If by some stroke of luck I win the lotto I believe it will be well invested, not thrown away in Atlantic City on slots. 7/18/2007 3:14:35 PM |

most people who play the lottery aren't that well educated, so that's one reason
also, when you win big, EVERYONE hounds you for money, to the point that you become suspicious of anyone trying to help you, even an honest financial manager. You'd rather just hold onto the money, which you do, and then you lose it all.
Read that story about the guy going broke b/c of his family. His ex girlfriend sued him and won money. His brother hired a hitman to have him killed to get the inheritance. Others in his family pestered him relentlessly until he agreed to invest in a car company and restaurant for them. He received nothing back. He lost it all to his greedy fucking family. And I'd be willing to bet that before he won the lottery, he was very close to his family and they were all nice to him.
Money changes people like blood stains. It's bad. 7/18/2007 3:32:01 PM |

People who win the lottery big and go broke are usually very uneducated white trash who blow through the money because they are too fucking stupid to live responsibly. Just throw the shit in the bank or invest it in low risk at a shitty 3% rate. Hell, $50mil at 3% is still $1.5mil a year cash money without even touching the principal. Thats around $130k a month, $40k a week. And its always replinished with no chance of going broke. Hell with $5k+ a day coming to me, I could have all the fun I need knowing when I wake up tommorrow, I have another $5k to play with. 7/18/2007 11:48:42 PM |

^^ The problem is that the people that are smart enough to do that are not the people buying lottery tickets.
The people that buy a large amount of tickets are the ones that SHOULD be saving the money they throw away every week on booze and the lottery 7/19/2007 11:04:07 AM |

Another bubble theory question.
Last night I bubbled out in a 24+2 Omaha Hi on Full Tilt. Money was 27, I finished 31 (I think).
Blinds are 400/800 (maybe small ante...50), i'm at ~7000, avg stack is a bit below 20k, and i'm sittin in 29/31.
The hand I went out on was AAxx double suited.
Basic question I have, is at what point are you laying down such a hand if the pot has yet to be opened up? And also, if has already been opened from EP, and I folding or RR from MP or LP? 7/24/2007 10:51:22 AM |
David0603 All American 12764 Posts user info edit post |
I'd always RR in that scenario. 7/24/2007 10:57:05 AM |
dman ncsu 86 All American 794 Posts user info edit post |
Which is what I did, and I think I got busted by QQxx.
My main concern with RR there is that i'm already such a short stack.
If EP bigger stack opens for 2400, I RR the pot in MP, all it's going to take is one more big stack to make the call, and then the odds for everyone else to hop on in are there. Granted in a way thats what I want as the short stack, it's a bit different to be drawing against 3 or 4 random hands in Omaha than Hold 'Em.

I realize that AA is much different in Omaha vs Holdem, but I still believe RR is always the correct play there. With blinds 400/800 a 7000 bet will not be an instacall even if you do have a big stack. Plus a big stack would have to be worried about the original raiser 3 betting, so you'll most likely end up heads up.

My train of thought says I could go 2 more orbits and probably be ITM. Thats the only thing I would think about that would prevent me from making a standard move. Is losing 1600 chips worth cashing 40 bucks? If I do lose them, I can still try to double at the point, i'm obv not going to be in a better position to do so, but I was already in a decently crappy one.
I dunno, my dilemma. 7/24/2007 11:30:12 AM |
David0603 All American 12764 Posts user info edit post |
You need to learn to play for 1st place. I think I said it a few pages back that in STT's I'd frequently get 4th place or 1st place, but very rarely 2nd or 3rd. 7/24/2007 11:36:21 AM |
dman ncsu 86 All American 794 Posts user info edit post |
I know that.
But if waiting it out after 3 hours for 4 more people to bust and then playing balls out not another decent option. Esp. given play gets much loose post-bubble, which makes for a better double/triple up oppurtunity (then you might be in contention). I know that in general for MTTs i've played in, if i'm in the top 5 w/ 50 to go, i'm generally going to finished in the top 3. However I have had several times where i've been 50/50 and then double here and there and still won. I think it's just all relative, I am just trying to figure the most logical way to A) make money at all, and B) put myself in a spot to make more. 7/24/2007 11:48:18 AM |
David0603 All American 12764 Posts user info edit post |
I'm not saying make some crazy play with mid ranged suited connectors. We're talking about AA doubled suited here. If play gets much loose post-bubble then wouldn't it make sense to play aggressive before that occurs when everyone else is playing really tight? 7/24/2007 11:54:42 AM |
pilgrimshoes Suspended 63151 Posts user info edit post |

dman, that hand is an instapush. no question about it, sucks when it doesn't go your way, but there is NO other way to play it. i mean what's the point of playing for 4 hours to limp itm and make 20 bucks, i'd rather try to build a stack and go deep. i wouldn't even care how many people called my raise, that hand has plenty of nut potential. 7/24/2007 3:56:00 PM |
dman ncsu 86 All American 794 Posts user info edit post |
But what is the point to play 4 hours, when you could go 4 and 15 mins and still have the same shot at going deep? I need to research a way to quantify my idea. 7/24/2007 4:17:48 PM |
David0603 All American 12764 Posts user info edit post |
Just look at the average payout for the final table and see how many times you can bust out vs make the final table and still be profitable. 7/24/2007 4:20:38 PM |
