You're right I don't have much experience but I have played around and flashed a few roms and used a CM10 rom for a month or so. I have no doubt more goes into a streamlined ROM with a good dev than I realize I just couldn't really notice any real benefits. It sounds like I need to play around with some more roms.

On my galaxy nexus, I was using bug less beast, but Pete got out of doing Dev stuff . so when 4.2.2 came along I finally bit the bullet and changed loyalties. I've been running MMuzzy's ROM. I really like it. Honestly I've had better stability with him than with bug less beast.

I tend to prefer stock feel Roms. Tweaks and optimizations are good, but frankly there's some really bloated bullshit out there.

I tried CM once and didn't like it at all.... But its good from a stability standpoint... Or so I hear anyway

Would someone give me one or two examples of something a custom rom has that a stock rom doesn't have (and I can't get by installing an app, tweak, or launcher?). Obviously excluding actual Android upgrade features.

I was browsing through some of the various rom features and it seems like they were all things I could do myself (for the most part) on my stock rom. Enable GPU rendering, change DPI, etc.

You can get root access on any stock rom. I have it now. Wifi tethering as well. I have disabled or removed any carrier or Samsung bloat.

I don't necessarily think better battery comes with a custom kernel. I noticed no difference between CM and stock although my battery typically lasts for almost 2 days usually.

Maybe touchwiz just isn't as bad as other HTC or Verizon bloat but I'm really not seeing the advantage here. Going to give another one a try though.

rooted ROM /= stock ROM
stock ROM that's rooted = custom ROM

if you don't see better battery life by custom ROM or kernel, you're doing it wrong, it's one of the biggest differences (custom clock speed and ability to change cpu/gpu profile), although doesn't always require custom kernel, depends on phone hardware

again, it depends entirely on your phone, a lot of carriers won't let you do wi-fi tethering without root, although possible, they tend to block it... no carrier I know of, including Google hardware comes with root

Regarding lack of PTT, didn't that utilize a different radio network? iden or something? Which that network was shut down.... Sure you could integrate this functionality to utilize data networks, but the use is for a narrow subset of people I would think. Its much better to be handled via applications and not the system.

Scheduling sync is an interesting option. Black out periods and the like... You can manually disable syncing on an avcount, so theoretically it should be easy to implement a scheduled toggle. But I think the best implementation is not to disable sync but to disable notifications through a do not disturb functionality.

Do not disturb is probably the one item I wish was integrated at a system level, as it is in iOS. With this integration, you should be able to block notifications on a work account from 6pm to 7am or whatever, and personal accounts from midnight to 7 am...

I would imagine there is some kind of option for scheduling certain messaging options, ie no work emails from 11pm-6am, even if its a third party app, but I haven't had the need

with regards to PTT, yes, the iden network was kind of shut down, for military reasons iirc, but i'm probably in the minority of people who actually used Nextel PTT and didn't think it was annoying (since you can make it handset speaker only and not annoy other people)...but it was nice, because it was as instantaneous as text messaging, but you didn't have to type anything (if you were driving for example), and didn't want to make a full phone call, just ask a question or three

HeyTell is a great app though, I recommend people check it out if you haven't already...its Android/iOS compatible, and basically sends voice messages with pretty good speed...if you have a signal, you should receive the message in less than a minute...only drawback (possibly) is it uses data to transfer the voice messages, so if someone is on a terrible data plan or isn't on wifi, it could possibly run up your data limit (I've never investigated the bandwidth of a certain length message)...but its a cool way to have a quick conversation with someone without having to make a phone call...and similar to Nextel PTT, it has the option to switch the audio from coming in over the speaker or the headset

New items of note: photosphere, quick settings, ui tweaks, lockscreen widgets, and a bunch of under the hood stuff.

Lock screen widgets I don't like that much, but swiping to the camera is a nice feature.

any of you use a contacts app that displays the contact's nickname (if present) instead of their first or last name? i'm on ICS and use go contacts...it blows my mind that android doesn't natively offer the option to display the nickname if it exists...seems super simple and to be a no-brainer

So I created an outlook.com 'email address' (alias on my live.com account)

But the only way I can get them on my phone is to use the Hotmail app, and manually open it and switch folders to my @outlook.com folder...ie no way to get notifications

any solutions?
