^^ nice, I'm really looking forward to going full frame when I get done with grad school and can afford the gear. Is there any way you could do a layer with the pier at lower exposure and the lightening behind it, so the pier doesn't look so overexposed?
Prospero - there is typically a pretty good crowd for the alumni events out here in Denver, maybe 15-20 people for the UNC games.
A friend was house/dogsitting and I came by to get some shots of the dogs. This pup was a good poser, and I thought the color/texture of the ottoman really add to the shot. This was a d200, 85 mm lens, f/1.8, ISO 320, 1/160s with +1/3 exposure bias 5/20/2011 4:27:17 PM |

nothing spectacular, just some interviews
and in case anyone interested in dSLR video missed it, the short film i posted on the last page that i shot also on the 7D: http://www.vimeo.com/23446303
Those lightning photos are great. I wonder if you could take a shorter exposure and combine some to get more detail in the flag.

So I dropped my D60 and broke my 18-55 kit lens. I wanted to see if anyone on here has upgraded and wants to sell that lens or possible an 18-105. It has to have VR.
Any recommendations on a different lens that might be a slight upgrade would be great also. I'm not looking to spend more than a few hundred and definitely don't want to go over $500 right now. 5/26/2011 12:03:02 PM |

Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
Actually yes, I have a 450D and the 50mm lens is only 2-inch lens, I had it over-shoulder, not around neck. Without huge battery packs and flashes and not being a full-frame camera, it's a fairly small body DSLR. I'm a complete amateur, I thought they were good shots, that's all. No professional equipment here.

why the VR requirement? it's great, don't get me wrong, but it's a huge premium on the lenses and i don't know that you get any real benefit from it in most cases, that said:

i LOVE my 18-200mm VR lens (D200 kit lens, i believe)...i can't remember how much i paid for it, but i nabbed a heck of a deal on CL...$300, maybe? i think it was actually less than that...you'll see them on CL for $500-600 all the time, but i passed on several ~$400 deals before finding the steal that i did
i am definitely a "walk around with one lens that does almost everything" kind of guy...i probably don't even really belong in this thread, as the most advanced thing i do/use on a regular basis is an SB600 flash (which, by the way, i would recommend to anyone...having a "real" flash makes a world of difference)...i rarely swap out my lens and when i do, it's really only for the 50mm f/1.4 on rare occasions5/27/2011 10:10:08 AM |

^ no way you got the 18-200 VR lens for $300, it's about 700 on amazon right now. I've heard it's a great lens though. If you did get it for 300, I feel sorry for the fool you robbed.
I'm the opposite - I carry a ton of lenses. I would say if your 18-55 is broken, grab that 50mm prime. It's the lens I shoot with the most, and it will take amazing pics. I got an old 24-120 mm non-VR nikon lens on CL, and it's probably the most utilitarian piece of glass I have. I have heard that the VR model sucks ass (from Ken Rockwell). 5/27/2011 2:36:51 PM |

Just picked up this:
Rokinon E-TTL II Power Zoom Canon-compatible Flash http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Rokinon-E-TTL-II-Power-Zoom-Canon-compatible-Flash/4046978/product.html Specifications: Flash range: 148 feet at 85mm zoom Zoom position: 24mm to 85mm Bounce position: 0/45/60/75/90 degrees Swivel: 180 degrees left/90 degrees right Recycle time: 0.5-9 seconds Power source: four AA batteries (not included) Dimensions: 2.8 inches x 3.9 inches x 4.9 inches Weight: Approximately 9.5 ounces (plus batteries)
For $79 shipped last week. Super-stoked to finally have a shoe-mounted flash.
A LOT cheaper than the 430EX II was planning on buying.

well, i did...my 50mm f/1.4 was something like $40...my SB600, NIB was $80 or $90 (the immaculate KATA bag i got at the same time was something around $20)
craigslist isn't as awesome as it used to be, but you can still find some crazy good deals...using something like http://adravage.com/ helps you find the deal first
the 18-200mm may not be up there consistently for $300 (let's be honest, that's a rare occurrence), but you can find them for ~$450 pretty frequently and a little bargaining can nab you one for ~$425

... monopods are light, small and compact. Shit, I had a small canon one that I got for $20 that was about 10" long and extended to about 5ft high. Made out of plastic, weighed nothing but couldn't hold a lot of weight.
The carbon fiber one I have now is only about 12" long and extends to 6' and weighs like 10oz. Easily transportable and moves about around the crowds with little hassles. Plus, it doubles as a weapon if needed in sticky situations.5/29/2011 8:41:50 AM |

We'd like to get one because the camera we've had that's been OK for a bit now just gives us blurry pictures of our little guy as he moves around too fast.
Any suggestions for an affordable model (something to learn on as well)? I'm not really sure where to start looking. 5/29/2011 12:37:45 PM |
JBaz All American 16764 Posts user info edit post |
that's the fault of the operator, not of the "fast moving little guy". If you don't know proper camera controls, it doesn't matter if you are using a point and shoot or a high end dlsr, you will still get blurry pics. You would probably kick yourself after spending $1000 on a DSLR setup and get the same results.
Most P&S shoot be able to do 1/2000th of a second shutter speed, even though most of them are electronic shutters, so you shouldn't have any issues with stopping the action... as long as there's enough light. P&S tend to have fairly slow lens, around the f/4-6.3 range on the telephoto side, but as long as you bump up the ISO, that negates it. 5/29/2011 3:59:05 PM |

my DIY string monopod has been invaluable...especially for less than $5...doesn't help for lifting the camera above the crowd and using a remote shutter, but it's great for stabilization

So I just finished up my first year of med school and my goal over the summer is to learn how to take some cool photos. I was wondering if you guys have any good sources of information for beginners. I pretty much know what all the settings do but have no idea how to combine them to get a good photo. What setting do you guys use for most HDR photos? Do you set the aeb all the way to -2/+2 or would a little lower give better results? 5/30/2011 9:58:15 AM |

Broke the f-mount on my 18-105 last week somewhere between london & paris. I went with the 18-105 and a 35mm prime. Usually I bitch & moan about how slow the kit lens is, but being stuck with the prime and not being able to get wide enough really made me appreciate it. I'll probably fix my 18-105 and upgrade to an 18-200 for an all around travel lens.5/30/2011 9:12:32 PM |

Short answer, yes, it does. At the distance you are probably shooting, that lens won't stop down enough to be a huge issue. If I had to guess, you need to set the autofocus to continuous.
What you need to do is read some articles online about photography basics. There's a lot you need to know to be an effective photographer, and everything you need to know is already out there. Here's a very good start: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials.htm

From our beach trip last week. I suppose technically my gf took this one of me. I set the camera up and focused, but she hit the shutter to humor me. I think it was a 5 or 7 second exposure.
Unfortunately I didn't really shoot much when I was down there.

I've been needing to vent this somewhere...
An in-law of mine is a photographer in a small town and does a lot of children / model type photography. She is great with Photoshop and has lots of nifty equipment but it irritates me to no end that at least 80% of her photos are taken at about a 30 degree angle to the left. Nothing is ever squared up, it's like she is incapable of taking a photo of someone with the horizon level.
What's the deal with people doing this? I went through a very short phase when I had my first digital camera of doing things like this but soon realized that it's more of a distraction in most photos and adds nothing to the composition. Maybe to the undiscerning eye it makes things look more "artsy", I'm not sure, but I know I can't be the only one that this irritates. 6/6/2011 2:41:11 PM |
