Except you just said how silly it was to do 50x of an exercise, which is exactly what she'd do if she was weightlifting.
As far as the whole abs debate is concerned, doing dedicated ab work is silly.

I'm a former shot putter. Trust me, I've lifted weights INTENSELY. At one point, I could bench my body weight. And I still HATE WEIGHT TRAINING!

Indeed.
I'm quite confident that with weighted ab exercises Lucy would easily get abs showing on her upper portion (the kind she admired in Joie) in a few weeks.
Head out to Wal-mart and pick up a 10 and 20lb kettle ball if you don't like "icky gooey weights."
You're going to have to do "rep based" exercises if you want to develop that area. You might as well hold something in your hands while you do it. 5/21/2010 10:36:47 AM |

i thought it was less reps more weight builds you up more reps lower weight strengthens you/increases endurance
but ur not really saying weight here...5/21/2010 12:37:38 PM |

That's true.
Essentially running is a "weight training" exercise, except all you're lifting is your leg, which is nothing because you lift it every time you walk. This is why running is an endurance exercise and not a strength training exercise.
However if you want to strengthen your quad muscles, that is, make them larger and stronger and more defined, you need to lift more and do less reps. You can do this by squatting large amounts of wait 5 reps for 5 times. 5/21/2010 12:52:15 PM |

I read the past 3ish pages of God spewing shit out of his keyboard and I just want to smack my head against the wall.
The Insanity workout program that Joie used to get her body you girls are drooling over features weightloss cardio plus muscle building body weight exercises. If you don't want to go into the gym or use any weights at all, and are looking for a program to follow, check it out. Fareako and Skwinkle have been doing it for a couple of weeks now, but I haven't heard of or asked for any of their results.
Looking at the before and after pictures of Insanity subjects, they don't bulk up. They just lose fat and harden the muscles they have.
Quote : | "Then you might just complete the hardest workout program ever put on DVD. Your personal trainer Shaun T will push you past your limits with 10 workout discs packed with plyometric drills on top of nonstop intervals of strength, power, resistance, and ab and core training moves. No equipment or weights needed. Just the will to get the hardest body you've ever had.
The secret to these mind-blowing results: MAX Interval Training. Shaun T took traditional interval training and flipped it on its head—you perform long bursts of maximum-intensity exercises with short periods of rest. Each workout keeps you constantly challenged as you alternate between aerobic and anaerobic intervals performed at your MAX. The result: burn up to 1,000 calories in an hour and get the most insane body in 60 days." |

quick, go google bodybuilding.com and find some more big words to use
Really though, ladies, take a look at the program. It may be just what you're looking for. Or you can listen to the twig who is telling you to go lift weights and won't listen to a word anyone else says.

my gym has a friday evening/saturday morning round robin where you show up and play two matches each with everyone else who shows up. (or till you want to leave). this is for squash though. but either way it's a great way to meet new people and find people you can play against regularly. ive gained 2-3 weekday morning partners out of doing this.
seems like your gym might have something similar, or if not, you should suggest it to them. esp if there is a "pro" to organize it or keep things moving, it works really well.

^^ yeah, and girls are not going to get jacked...not without really specifically trying to do so, anyway.
Quote : | "Powerlifters and Olympic lifters completely nullify that argument." |
Uhhh...what?
I think that for general fitness and athleticism, you should do bodyweight exercises as well as lift weights. You're hampering yourself by not doing any weightlifting. That said, there's a place for bodyweight stuff, too.
Also, I think that weighted pull-ups are great. I don't do them weighted every time, but I do them with a 25 or 35 lb plate at least a couple of times per month.
This is oversimplifying, but I'd say 3-5 reps for strength, and 8-12 for size. Above that, you're pretty much training muscle endurance or doing cardio with weights. Also, just because you want to train for strength doesn't mean you should never bump the reps up and do some hypertrophy work. At a certain point, it becomes better to concentrate on building more muscle mass than to chase diminishing returns trying to eek more strength out of what you've got.

^^it's not me
i mean, i do think weights are boring but i still do them
and just because im here: abs/legs (this has been the first time ive worked abs in a while!)
Squats: (3 x 12, 135 lb)-next time im going 100-115 lb and try to go lower. i think itll be better leg press(3 x12, 150 lb) deadlift (3 x 12, 95 lb) hamstring curls (3 x 12, 120) lunges (100, 30 lb)
then i did this little ab workout that consists of 4 exercises 3 times (all body weight) hanging leg raises (3 x 12)
30 min stair stepper.
now im doing 40 oz curls
