I think it's a good picture. Love the angle and field of view, plus the lighting is just right for a good pj snap shot. You got foreground, mid and background; all interesting and telling a story. The words really don't jump out since my eye converges due to the dynamic lines of the wall, ceiling and rails. While letters, symbols and words are powerful elements in a photo, this is a good example how it's pretty down played and not dominate.

Is what on the wall distasteful? yeah a bit, but its part of the freedom of the expression tunnel. This debate is always renewed every time something like this happens. Almost always around this time of the year.

After a short interview with Blake Griffin yesterday, I asked him if he'd let me grab a headshot. He obliged.

yeah Ronny, I really liked your portrait stuff up above and the Griffin shot. Is the Blake shot using a flash off camera?

This is a pic I was pretty happy with, taken at Chautauqua Park in Boulder. The bee is a little fuzzy, but with it hovering and the wind blowing the flower, I was happy at least one shot came out...kind of

I use this, and it has tons of room without being oversized. I can carry a complete camera in the top and a body, 3 lenses, flash, diffusers, battery grip, charger, and AA battery carrier in the bottom. Still room to spare.

Do you have CF/SD cards? extra batteries?

I don't think there is an extra battery. I have one sd card that the camera will read, and she had two 4 gigs in there that the camera won't read. google tells me the d50 wont read over 2gb.

I'm still a beginner so I don't have much to add.
In addition to what you listed, you need a tripod. A graduated ND filter would also be nice.
The biggest thing I can suggest is to read about whatever type of pictures you want to take, then go and take a lot of pictures. Experiment a lot; you can delete crappy pics.

is there any brand of sd card that is better than others? keep in mind it has to work in the d50.

thanks for the suggestions, I'm adding stuff to my amazon wish list now.

in short, no...a lot of people have their own opinion, but it's usually just that

if you stick with a name brand, you'll be fine...if you shoot in RAW, you might want to get one of the faster cards (i wouldn't go less than class 6)...if you don't, class 4 should be fine (personal preference)

i haven't bothered to google, but i don't know if the D50 supports SDHC or not, so you may be limited to 2gb...maybe 4gb (SD spec, not SDHC) if it uses the later spec revision

I definitely want a quick card. I work with little kids and they are difficult to catch in the right moment sometimes. and I know it won't take a card greater than 2gb. Not sure about the sdhc v. sd thing though. I will check it out after work!

google says no high capacity oh well. 550 pictures is plenty for a beginner. I'll get a second (and third or fourth most likely) card soon.

given the age of the D50, i'm betting the sandisk ultra II/III cards are about as fast as it can write, anyway...which means anything past 133x (20 MB/s) will likely not yield any performance increase

if it won't read anything larger than 2gb, it's first spec SD...second SD spec (1.01, maybe?) will recognize 4gb...SDHC (SD high capacity) will recognize 32gb (theoretically 2tb, but right now limited to 32gb)

i think i'm going to make myself an fb for photography services, with the recent portrait work I'm getting. debating with myself on whether to make it an artist page or a business page a normal human page. I have an aversion to suggesting people 'like' me, friending seems more personal but I don't know if i need personal.

I use these:

Lexar Professional Series 16 GB 300x UDMA - but it looks like you need SD rather than CF

I believe so. So I'm testing everything out now to make sure it all works. Hasn't been used since Xtine passed away. I'm learning new things. Anyone know where I can get a printed D50 user manual?

I don't ever use huge memory cards anyway. I see people using huge cards and I'd just be scared something would happen and I'd lose that much worth of data. I stick to 4gig and below usually, 8 max, even when shooting in RAW. I just rock like 5 of them.

I'm probably being over cautious, but I don't want to lose my shots.

I agree with you there. I usually carry one 4 and one 8 gig card. With my XTi, there was never a worry about running out of space. With the T2i, I worry if I get an awesome video opportunity that I'll eat up all of the space in no time. So I carry one 16 gig and one 4 gig now. Usually only leave around 200 shots max on a card before transferring. But when I take big trips, I get the peace of mind to not have a card crap out of me while I'm in the bush with no backup. It hasn't happened (knock on wood), but it's nice to have a backup just in case.

Shooting raw+jpeg each photo is about 30mb each, which ends up being about 550 photos / 16gb card

I can fit about 12 minutes of video on a 16gb card

Yeah, video would probably necessitate a bigger card. Just shooting with my XSi I don't have the need for video space.
