^^yeah but you dont have to worry about playing him when IF he gets put on the DL. Just wait til he's healthy again then trade him. Betemit needs a permanant spot on the lineup and Giles and his horrible average need to go.

today is july 17

giles will likely be on the DL through early august, the trading deadline is july 31 so he can't be traded

i guess its possible for him to be put on retroactively beginning last saturday, but he'll still be on through the deadline

i'd rather see laroche go

we can get more for him and betemit would be better suited to play 1st than 2nd

(and as i type this laroche hits a bomb )

well we have won 6 in a row and are the hottest team in baseball and are still 5 games under 500. With the way they started the season I thought they were going to end up 70-91. Now I am thinking more like 81-80ish.

Congrats to Mccann on his first career grand slam. Kudos to Chipper for his 14 game extra base hit streak, hate it had to end but its been almost 80 years since anyone has done that.

Interesting stats from Elias Sports Bureau.

The Braves, fresh off a three-game sweep against the Padres in which they scored 10+ runs in every game, hammered the Cardinals on Monday night, 15-3. They are the first team in major-league history to score 10-or-more runs in four consecutive games, each time against a team in sole possession of first place.

The Braves have scored 59 runs over their last five games, their highest total over any five-game span in more than 100 years -- since they scored 61 times in five games in September 1897.

Quote :
"Jones wanted chance to close for Braves
Guy Curtright - Staff
Tuesday, July 18, 2006

Detroit --- Todd Jones is the closer on the team with the best record in baseball. You would think that things couldn't have worked out any better.

Not so.

"I really wanted to pitch for the Braves," the native of Marietta said. "I always have, and I thought this was going to be the time."

Jones, 38, had 40 saves last season with Florida, and the Braves were one of several teams that showed interest in the free agent.

But Detroit blew the others away, giving Jones a two-year deal worth $11 million. He had pitched with the Tigers before, setting a team record with 42 saves in 2000.

"I would have played in Atlanta for a big discount," said Jones, an Osborne High School graduate who lives in Pell City, Ala. "I grew up a big Braves fan, and it would have been great to play close to home. But John Schuerholz wouldn't go to a second year.

"The last few times I've been a free agent, I was hoping to end up with the Braves. I thought what I did with Florida last year was just what they needed [this season]. But it didn't work out again."

A couple of rough outings have inflated Jones' ERA with the Tigers to 5.50, but he has converted 24 of his 27 save opportunities. The Braves would love to have a closer with that success rate.

"Don't make me sound bitter," said Jones, who has 250 career saves. "The way we're playing, I have to be happy here. But pitching in Atlanta would have made my life. I still wish that it would have happened.""

If the Mets go .500 the rest of the way the Braves need to go 47-23 to tie for the lead. Good luck.

Hey thanks for proving to my Cardinals that Jeff Weaver is a joke.

Seriously, that was so bad last night I almost felt bad for him.

First time in MLB since the 1930's that a team has score 10+ runs in 5 straight games. Go Braves!

dude this is crazy, I cannot remember the last time the braves scored under 10 runs. Where the hell was all this offense all those games where our pitchers held the other team low and we couldn't buy a hit. Now 15, 11, 10, 15, and 13 so far in this game. WTF. Let's go BRAVES

Assuming the Braves close it out, they are now only 4 games out of the wild card lead.

Wild Card
1. Cincy 49-45
2-7. NL West minus the Padres plus Houston and Milwaukee
8. Atlanta 45-49

Mets also went into the all star break at .500 last year and came out over by the end of the season.

One thing that happened in June that no one is really talking about is that McCann was out and just coming back from his injury. His presence in the lineup, not to mention that he is the leading hitter in the ML with running in scoring position and two outs, are critical to the offense. Giles not leading off is a good thing, plus LaRoche decided to start playing like an alive person again.

Well you aren't going to score 10 off our 1 good pitcher.

Nice homer Jimmy.

Seriously these Braves might win the WC.

The Braves will get help before the deadline....or at least they should.

This team can hit.

And yes I know the Cards staff is horrible minus Carp and Reyes.

Maybe this will help the bullpen:

Quote :
"Braves get Wickman from Indians

Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.com
Posted: 2 hours ago

The Braves finally obtained a closer Thursday, acquiring right-hander Bob Wickman from the Indians for Class A catcher Max Ramirez, FOXSports.com has learned.

Wickman is 1-4 this season with a 4.18 ERA and 15 saves.
Wickman, 37, had to approve the deal as a player with 10 years of major league service, five with the same team.

Braves manager Bobby Cox had wanted the team to add a closer, believing he can get through the seventh and eighth innings with his current relievers.

The Braves showed mild interest in Wickman as a free agent last off-season, but Wickman re-signed with the Indians. Chris Reitsma then flopped as the Braves' closer before getting injured.

For the Indians, the trade of Wickman creates an opportunity for right-hander Fausto Carmona to pitch in save situations.
