Quote : | "Cavaliers have week to match Bobcats' offer sheet
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In need of a big man, the Charlotte Bobcats reached agreement Tuesday on a three-year offer sheet with Cleveland restricted free agent Anderson Varejao, giving the Cavaliers a week to match the deal or lose him.
ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher reported the offer sheet is worth $17.4 million, which would fit the Bobcats' mid-level salary cap exception.
Anderson Varejao
Varejao Varejao's agent, Dan Fegan, could not immediately be reached.
The 6-foot-10 Varejao has been in a prolonged contract dispute with the Cavaliers, which has kept him sidelined this season. He said last week that he would prefer to be traded.
"I wanted to come back," he told ESPN.com's Chad Ford last week. "I love the fans and I really love my teammates. But there are others there that have made it very difficult. It's gotten to the point that I don't want to play there anymore. I'm just hoping for a sign-and-trade at this point."
The 25-year-old Varejao averaged 6.8 points and 6.7 rebounds last season in helping the Cavaliers reach the NBA finals for the first time.
Cavs GM Danny Ferry told Ford last week that the team still wants Varejao back.
"We fully understand that negotiations can be emotional," Ferry said. "As for Anderson's potential to remain a Cavalier and put this behind us, we value his presence in this organization, on and off the court, and that has not changed."
Bobcats coach Sam Vincent has been pleading for a big man since the beginning of the season. The Bobcats lost Sean May to season-ending knee surgery in training camp. Starting center Primoz Brezec has been ineffective and was replaced in the starting lineup by rookie Jared Dudley Monday night in Toronto, the Bobcats' sixth straight loss.
Before training camp opened, Varejao turned down Cleveland's one-year, $1.2 million qualifying offer. If he had signed that deal, the former second-round pick could have become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
In late October, the Cavaliers rejected a six-year, $52 million package presented by Fegan.
Varejao is known for his energy and defense, and the move comes a day after Vincent questioned his team's focus and preparation following the 98-79 loss to the Raptors.
The Bobcats, with 15 guaranteed contracts, would have to release a player to add Varejao if the Cavaliers don't match the offer." |

Picking up Michael Jordan was an unequivocal disaster.
The Richardson trade, the Carroll megadeal, and this addition have capped us out with a shitty team for the next three years.
What a fucking joke.
We're going to be in the luxury tax if we extend Okafor/Felton.
Fuck this fucking prick. Bernie was doing a great job keeping our flexibility. 12/16/2007 11:08:49 AM |
montclair All American 1372 Posts user info edit post |
keeping our flexibility obviously meant losing lots of games.
i'm not happy with what we've done necessarily, but I'm glad to finally see my team TRY to put something on the court.
The one good thing about this deal is we got the best player in the trade.
I don't think Okafor is worth what he is asking for. 12/16/2007 1:27:08 PM |
rallydurham Suspended 11317 Posts user info edit post |
Newsflash, we're still losing games except now we can't sign GOOD free agents, make trades with teams looking to rebuild, or get high draft picks.
They've royally fucked this franchise for the forseeable future. Nazr isn't that bad, but you don't waste cap space on him. He's the kind of guy you add AFTER you've used up your cap space.
What a joke, you can't expect people without a lick of salary cap understanding to run a basketball franchise.
Plain and simple when you waste all your cap space on marginal talent you are going to suck in this league.
Max out your cap with the best talent possible and then add complementary players with mid level exceptions. Jesus, we wasted three years of suckage with the promise "we're being patient building a team" and then we panic and completely go the other direction and become the modern day Philadelphia 76ers.
We should have offered Varejao more, he's much better than Nazr.
Fuck Jordan.

Quote : | "Jordan steps on practice floor with Bobcats in effort to teach
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Michael Jordan was back on the court Tuesday, swishing jump shots and talking tough.
No, he's not making another comeback.
In an effort to get more involved with his slumping team, the Charlotte Bobcats' part-owner jumped into a drill during the team's practice. He then gave tips to some young players and showed he still has that famous shooting touch.
"This was more or less for the morale of the players," Jordan said. "The last couple of days it has been all about trying to get them to focus on the little things and to play as a team."
The workout came a day after Jordan sat in on team meetings and film sessions as the Bobcats try to end a stretch of 10 losses in 12 games under first-year coach Sam Vincent.
"I also told them yesterday that on this team we have no All-Stars -- none," Jordan said. "That means everybody has to rely upon each other to be successful. Until we develop an All-Star that can take over a game, I think it's very important for them to understand that they have to play as a unit. I think that's the message that a lot of the guys got."
It was a rare on-court appearance for the 44-year-old Jordan, who bought into the Bobcats in June 2006 and was given the final say on the team's basketball decisions.
Jordan has been rarely seen in public since. He's granted few interviews and when he attends home games, he sits in a suite above the court. He has instructed arena staff not to show him on the video board.
But Jordan chatted with reporters Tuesday after working out with the team, which has struggled after a 6-4 start. He said building a 13-point, third-quarter lead last Friday against Orlando before losing showed him the Bobcats aren't far from being a winning team.
"I thought the game against Orlando, they could have stepped out and made a name for themselves," Jordan said. "They did, but so quickly they reverted back to old habits in the second half. That proves to me that they have it. You just have to somehow get it out of them, so they focus on all 15 guys, as opposed to one guy here or one guy there being the focus. I think the last couple of days we had great conversations."
Jordan, who won six NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls, is still trying to translate that success to the front office. He was fired as president of the Washington Wizards in 2003 in a stint interrupted by Jordan's second comeback as a player.
Jordan has gotten Bobcats owner Bob Johnson to spend money in his new role. Jordan was behind a draft-night deal that brought in Jason Richardson from Golden State. Last week, the Bobcats traded Primoz Brezec and Walter Herrmann to Detroit for center Nazr Mohammed.
But the added payroll hasn't led to more wins. Jordan stressed he believes the key will be point guard Raymond Felton getting the ball inside more and avoiding critical errors.
"By now we should start to see more consistency in his play," Jordan said. "Less turnovers, more leadership so that you don't have periods where you come down and lose the ball with no shot on three straight plays. On that fourth play you have to focus."
Jordan echoed many of the complaints Vincent has had about his team.
"Sam is totally saying the same thing," Jordan said. "But coming from me it resonates a little more and a little bit fast."" |
