Anyone have the Torch? My contract is about up and I am thinking about getting one. I love my bold 9000 it is just a bit outdated now. I don't care about playing games and that kind of stuff on my phone so I don't see the need for an iphone or droid.

i would give up any blackberry on the market right now for a Verizon supported iPhone.

for personal use.

for work i still like the BB. but fuck a Storm/Storm2. they really chose the wrong fork in the road when they defiantly declared that, opposite the iPhone, customers/users would WANT to feel the tactile click/pressing of the "keypad". it feels cheap and is loud as fuck. if there is no VZN iPhone in the near future I'll probably get a newer curve. storm2 has just been a big pile of MEH

also how are you going to make me go through like 5 different menus to get to my GPS on/off option? (OS5.0) why not just have it be one of the signals you can turn on and off like bluetooth/wi-fi/cellular

Meh, I think there are still a decent amount of people who still want a tactile keyboard (I would say a majority of them are older people). It's pretty much the only reason I'm considering getting a Torch when my contract runs up (have a Bold now).

The thing is...I know I would have a lot of fun and use all the apps on a Driod/iphone. But as it stands, I have no desire to use them right now. I use my phone for email, calling/texting, and web browsing. To me, Blackberry is still equal to or superior to other phones in the first two departments and shitty in the third. But with the Torch, they've finally abandoned their shitty web browser. So although it's still not up to par with the iphone/Droids, at least it's infinitely better than what it is now.

So as long as I still don't give a shit about the other bells and whistles, I don't see any reason to switch to an iphone/Droid. I still hate touchscreen keyboards.

sorry i misstated my objection.

they chose the wrong fork at the decision of: "hey guys, we're creating a touch screen phone. should it click or otherwise move and make noise?"

they chose yes. the answer is no.

either have a touch screen (i love the functionality of apple's product line in the context of touchscreen) or just keep a keyboard.

they tried to do both on the storm2 and ended up with a big fail.

the torch is another stab at it, but i think id rather just go back to a curve in lieu of a VZW iPhone

Any good SSH clients floating around?

I'm trying to get MidPSSH working but it keeps whining about wanting a port despite repeated attempts to give it one. I think it's breaking on OS5

And I'd like to keep it under $5; would spend $10 for a good client; definitely NOT spending $30 from the app store (although I'm not above a purchase request .

my blackberry tour randomly popped up with text on the screen saying something along the lines of "there has been a malfunction with this unit. take it back to where you bought it to get it fixed"... I don't remember the exact wording, and it has since gone away and there is nothing but black screen. When i plug my bb into the computer, it doesn't recognize it.

battery pull did no good.

anyone have this happen?

^not sure...that sucks though...do you have a recent backup? if so you could always try resetting the BB and restoring the most recent backup

has anyone messed with the 'new' BBs that have both the touch screen and the slide-out keyboard? looking to upgrade my 8530i sometime

^you and your fancy new phones. It's like you work at the joint.

How are you liking that flip action? I see myself sticking it in my pocket more often to do battle with the lint balls. I'm sure that's good on a keyboard.

It is actually nice to have a flip phone again. My only beef is where the camera is-my finger is always covering the lens.

Got a Verizon Blackberry for work. Still have my iPhone and they also gave me a Sprint 4G hotspot. So now I'm rocking 3 networks. Kind of annoying. Had a couple questions.

1. How easy is it to upgrade to the latest blackberry version. (6)? It's a blackberry tour/bold whatever.

2. Why is it slow? We use a Microsoft exchange server and I added it to my iPhone and my iPhone gets emails noticeably faster than the blackberry. Is it because it hits the blackberry servers then gets pushed out? Whereas my iPhone is directly getting exchange pushes?

3. Why is it slow updating read status? I get emails at work and it does it's blinky thing. I read them on my laptop in outlook and it literally takes minutes or more for the blackberry to register them read. My iPhone is almost instant. (same with Gmail push).

4. everything else sucks about it. I just use it because I have to. Not to bash it but do people actually attempt browsing on these things?

5. I keep wanting to touch it.

^^

1. Very easy to upgrade...just have to go to the Verizon site and make sure you get their version of the new OS to avoid any compatibility issues...download might take a little while, but the upgrade should be seamless

2. Do you use a Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) tied into your Exchange Server? I have a BES and I get emails within 1-2 seconds of sending them on my BB. People who don't have BES might take 30 seconds to get an email.

3. Sounds like as in #2, you don't have a BES. Its not that slow, but I understand your sentiments. Also, you can manually reconcile emails, which should update new emails / read status as soon as you reconcile.

4. Browsing in the default browser isn't great, and while the Opera Mini browser can do everything, its slow and its a pain to zoom in and out. Best bet is to download some apps for certain sites/functions, ie the Google app is a fine search tool, the Associated Press app is a great news tool, ScoreMobile is great for sports scores...but yeah, BBs aren't the best phones for browsing...I use mine to browse when necessary, but if a computer is anywhere nearby, I prefer that

5. This is the only thing I haven't experienced...but its my personal preference with phones...keyboards are more precise than touch screens...but also, I've never been a huge touchscreen fan as I get enough fingerprints on my non-touchscreen BB

i have the curve 8530 on Sprint

since i did my last update (to 5.0.0.734) its been doing a few weird things

-when i call speed dial contacts, occasionally it won't make the speed-dialing noise, and I won't be able to hear the other party even though they can hear me. when it does this, I hang up and call right back and usually the problem is fixed
-when I'm typing a new SMS or email and someone calls me, it doesn't use any of the sound profiles I have. instead it rings with the default ringtone

updating to the newest version will hopefully fix these issues... just posting here in case someone else is experiencing similar issues

Ugh, RIM.

Why would you need an optical trackpad on a touch device? (trick question)

go to Verizon's site and look for software upgrades...not sure when it comes out, but its carrier-specific, unless you want to use an OS version from another carrier with risks of bricking it

The 8530 won't get 6.0. It doesn't have enough memory. That's why the 9330 was released.

if i try to open a brower, i get an "insufficient network coverage" error. Anyone else having trouble?

So the Unlimited International Data plan is no longer? I'll be in Europe for a week and I'm picking up a sim card for my iPhone but my company BlackBerry I'm taking for emergencies and email. From what I understand there used to be an unlimited data plan for international roaming but it ended in January? Anyone know anything about this?
