he said he came back like 20 pounds stronger too. i was hoping for like .270-.290, 30+ HR... he's had a horrible last 2 or so weeks, dropped from an already low .255 BA to .239 now. Maybe he'll have a decent 2nd half 7/2/2008 3:38:32 PM |

Didn't he use to be clutch? For some reason I remember him being one of the best two out hitters in baseball last year. Watching him play this year makes me believe that can't be right.
I couldn't find current stats but as of June 19 he was hitting .226 (19-for-84) with runners in scoring position this season, and has just two hits in 18 at-bats with the bases loaded.

For what it's worth, his 2 out, RISP stats
2007: .333/.408/.494 2008: .256/.304/.372 career: .301/.360/.479
and RISP, any number of outs:
2007: .341/.389/.527 2008: .206/.269/.330 career: .308/.360/.496
His numbers are down across the board, though.
From early in his career, most prognosticators saw Francoeur as an extreme hit-or-miss (no pun intended) prospect. He was either going to be great, or he was going to be Xavier Nady. I think his defense is worth giving him every chance to find his swing again and Cox is notoriously loyal to his players. But another year of this crap and he'll be a National.7/2/2008 6:46:54 PM |

Next year i wouldnt be surprised if he hit 30hr though, but his eye and patience has to improve. he struck out 76 times in 84 AA games this year. There is a reason why corey patterson got sent down, he had the same type of #s Francoeur has had his first real call up, but he didnt improve his OBP and his K #s. Just something to watch for.

ryan on mlbtraderumors mentioned ricciardi is getting phone calls on burnett, saying the jays could use a ml-ready SS. he speculated lillibridge could be an option, but that would be too good to be true. lillibridge shat on any value he had, and i think the cubbies would jump on burnett with cedeno and would be a better trade option. also, wren has said he's not searching for a pitcher... dummy. i'd jump all over this if there's any truth to it. 7/4/2008 9:36:47 AM |

what a fucking tool:
Quote : | "This has really put a damper on my relationship with the Atlanta Braves," Francoeur told the AJC." |
http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2008/07/04/francoeur_0704.html if he wasn't so shitty, it could mean the difference in the outcome of several games this year. overall, we've been a decent hitting team to this point, and if he had come through in alot of RBI chances, we wouldn't be 7 games out. and then he has the audacity to find fault in the team's decision to do something about it.
the article does go on to say that the team gave him the choice between AAA and AA, and he chose AA due to his relationship with manager Wellman.
Wren says he returns following the AS break. he better fix both his swing and his goddamn mouth.7/4/2008 2:33:52 PM |

Definitely the best thing for Franceour, it's not like his cold streak is a new thing. These are his numbers for the past 3 seasons, total.
2006:
.293 OBP, .449 slug., = .742 OPS
2007:
.338 OBP, .444 slug. = .782 OPS
2008:
.287 OBP, .374 slug. = .661 OPS
I only wish the Braves had tried to trade him when his stock was high. Now they'll be lucky to get anything decent for him, and I wouldn't exactly call it a sure thing that he'll ever make it to the majors again. 7/6/2008 9:11:44 PM |

Ehhh, hate to be the Francoeur hater again, but he's not a good fielder. In fact, he's a slightly below average fielder. This is, as much as anything, an indictment of how much of a joke the "Gold Glove" award is. He has a strong arm, I'll give him that, which is what people will remember about him.
Francoeur Fielding Runs Above Average (FRAA)
2005: -1 2006: -15 2007: -1 2008: 0
Total: -17 basically says (sort of) that he's cost the Braves 17 runs over the course of his career due to his fielding 7/7/2008 12:39:27 AM |
Ernie All American 45943 Posts user info edit post |
I'm not saying Francoeur is a great corner outfielder (he isn't), but he is a decent corner outfielder. More importantly, though, FRAA is a stupid stat because there is no baseline. I'd rather use Fielding Runs Above Replacement (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?mode=viewstat&stat=76). According to BP, his yearly FRAAs are 5, -3, 13, and 8, slightly below average for a left fielder, but nothing terrible.
I'm just splitting hairs, though. Either way, his arm isn't going to save his job if he keeps an OPS of .660.
Quote : | "and I wouldn't exactly call it a sure thing that he'll ever make it to the majors again." |
He'll definitely be back. Jones, Anderson, and Blanco will get some time, but Cox is retardedly loyal (remember Langerhans going 0-for-April last year?).

Fielding stats are all notoriously hard to quantify, but I agree that any way you look at he's basically an average outfielder, if that.
I think there's an excellent chance he'll be back again, if nothing else in September, just not that it's an absolute sure thing. It's not like he's on big-time major league money (I think he's making something like 400,000 this year, with no bigger contract signed yet, thank God). Like I said, I really wish the Braves had traded him in the offseason, when some other team might have been dumb enough to take him and his career .760 OPS from us in exchange for something halfway decent.

I think it was a great time to send him down. Got in a few games, got some hits. They bring him back with a 6 game road trip, then the all-star break. He can relax without having to play with the pressure of playing at home. Thinking he might have a big game tonight. 7/7/2008 6:48:42 PM |

yet another 1-run loss on the road, way to go team.
this has been a shitty season, it's time to pack it in, cut our losses and prepare/do what we can to make noise next year. we've had some awful luck - all teams do, but no one ever would have thought frenchy would choke like he did this year, and with our inability to break through in 1-run games, it all just adds up to too much. our luck/mojo isn't changing as the season progresses, either.
honestly, i really don't know what i'd do to make this team better if i were frank wren. i'd stop doing shit like signing julian tavarez for one thing. looking forward at what we'll have next season, it just doesn't look bright there either. 7/10/2008 1:28:15 AM |
