At one point I had asked whether or not the PS3 / 360 's six discrete output terminals were gold plated. This was quite obviously a sarcastic way of pointing out the fact they neither even HAS discrete outputs. He's attempting to mock.
Point in fact, gold does carry sound signals better than any other material, but I personally do not use that as a hardline requisite for my equipment. Just a useful surface level indicator.

Depends. Black Gate capacitors are the only ones I've ever seen that have actual gold leads and internals, but that's hardly necessary if you've got a sound circuit design. Diminishing return sets in.11/30/2007 1:28:56 PM |

^^I'm sure you're trying to make some snide comment about not having Wal-Mart somehow skews the results in Blu-ray's favor. Well, unfortunately, it's been like this since day one and Nielsen data is still the most widely accepted predictor of sales data. You're not being clever for questioning it, several people on AVSForum have already been banned for trying to make the same (incorrect) point.
DVD sales /= HD media sales. Wal-mart has a terrible selection of HD media, and also has about 2x more Blu-ray's than HD DVDs. There is no reason assume the sales ratio at Wal-mart is any different than anywhere else. Also, had Wal-mart data been included in last weeks figures, it would have been even more skewed in Blu-ray's favor. Wal-mart had far and away the best Thanksgiving PS3 sale, giving away 10 Blu-rays with each PS3 sold. 11/30/2007 2:20:57 PM |

and excluding something as HUGE as wal-mart pretty much throws your credibility out of the window. No if's and's or but's about it.

Giving away doesn't equate to a unit sold. Or maybe it does for Sony, which would also explain a lot and further invalidate numbers.
And yes, I'm going to say that the results are somehow skewed considering a few weeks ago Wal-mart must've moved 50,000 players on their own, have been advertising HD DVD and, you know, they make up 40% of the DVD market. Sure explains why, on the week of the $99 HD DVD player sale HD DVD sales, looked like they dropped, doesn't it?
Also, I couldn't care less about who AVSForum chooses to ban or not ban, but that's awesome that you choose to take it as some kind of proof.
Furthermore, does the VideoScan information even count online retailers?

It has nothing do with the "popular belief". Until a more accurate 3rd party predictor of home video sales emerges, Nielsen is the best we got. Questioning it's validity is nothing but a giant waste of everyone's time. The moderators of the largest discussion on this subject agree. Of course, pretending it doesn't count is about the only route HD DVD supporters can take, since HD DVD has yet to win a week this year.
Quote : | "All i saw in that post was making an ass out of you and me." |
Uh, you're welcome to point out a single assumption I made in that post. Every single thing I posted was fact, something HD DVD folks seem to take issue with The only assumption being made here is that Wal-mart has a drastically different HD media sales ratio than the retailers Nielsen does include. Nice try though.
Quote : | "Giving away doesn't equate to a unit sold. Or maybe it does for Sony, which would also explain a lot and further invalidate numbers." |
Yes they do count. Anything rung up at the register, even for zero dollars, does count. The stuff that doesn't count are movies included in the box and mail in stuff. It's also cute that you think Blu-ray gives away more movies than HD DVD, when it is in fact the complete opposite.
Quote : | "Furthermore, does the VideoScan information even count online retailers?" |
Yes.

See Golovko, that's an assumption, not what I posted. And no, it doesn't explain a thing, since Best Buy had the same exact sale and has a much larger selection of HD media. Also, 40% of DVD sales doesn't mean jack since we're not talking about DVD sales. Wal-mart is actually well behind Best Buy, Circuit City, and Amazon.com in HD media sales.
All of you really need to do some more research on this subject so you can stop talking out of your asses.11/30/2007 3:04:32 PM |

Don't you HD DVD idiots understand? It's the best we've got. It just can't be wrong. Who cares if it completely omits the largest retailer in the United States who recently pushed a ton of units to market. They don't have every HDM available so surely no one buys there.

Nielsen isn't biased, and isn't skewing numbers to make one format look better. Wal-mart hasn't released sales numbers to Nielsen since around 2001. If they did, Nielsen would be obligated to include them. Its reasoning behind Wal-mart's move that they felt their competitors were getting more benefit from knowing their numbers, than they were for knowing their competitors' numbers. By this data (waaaaay back on page 1), we see that HD DVD had once enjoyed a lead over Blu-ray (back when every player was in the $600+ range), but hasn't since before the last holiday season.
Stein, Wal-mart may be the leader in standard DVD sales, but Best Buy is the industry leader in HDM sales (NPD Group, October 2007). "NPD declined to report specific unit sales shares for each of the retailers but noted that Best Buy is far in front. Amazon.com and the rest [Amazon, Wal-Mart, Circuit City, Target] are mostly clustered together for the second through fifth spots." 11/30/2007 5:20:47 PM |

guys, gold does NOT conduct better than copper, it is slightly inferior by a small margin. copper is the best conductor but it oxidizes easily in open air and the oxidized form of copper does not conduct well at all. gold on the other hand, does not corrode, has a good conductivity and is thus use in connectors and interconnects. 11/30/2007 11:39:16 PM |
