I kind of feel bad for Dwayne Greene, Zach's father. He's an officer in the Wolfpack Club and you know a ton of people are gonna come up to him and ask him what happened and why he didn't follow in his footsteps.

It's never good to miss on a legacy recruit, but 5-11 180 corners are a dime a dozen. If he were a QB or a Monster Lineman this would have stung a little more.

Well actually I think Greene is a little undersized, and would have been better suited to play slot back or WR on the college level. He's 5-9 165, but has great speed having ran a 4.35 40 at a combine.

Actually, I just looked back at their classes from the past couple of years. This years class doesn't even look as good as a few dating back to the 05 recruiting class. Thats 4 classes in a row that look as good on paper (if not better) than this class. They have numerous 4* guys and at least 1 5*. This doesn't scare me at all. The problem is that its d00k football. They have no home field advantage, their field sucks, and the players along side these good recruits for them suck.

This year's in-state talent is far superior to last season's. Nixon, Moss, and Dixon are all more highly regarded than Terrell Manning (the #1 NC player in 2008) was last year. Holloman is too but he's switched from Independence to a school in South Carolina so he's no longer in-state. This year's class also has great depth with guys like McAdoo, Boyd, Bond, Bell, and Shankle.

Truth. Duke has had a few highly-touted recruits here and there but has mostly settled for 2 and 3 star recruits. This year's class is shaping up to be pretty similar to recent years so it's nothing surprising. I think people are just surprised at the number of verbals that Duke has received in the past few days. Duke will improve under Cutliffe but UNC and State will still be better.

I think the top players in this year's in-state class are collectively better than last year's, but there is more depth overall on last year's squad. Also outside of Proctor there isn't a really top notch QB, and Proctor wasn't even seriously considered as a QB by most of the schools that recruited him. I think his arm strength and passing will be better this year having gone to a number of college camps and he has great leadership qualities which is what you look for in a QB, but as a complete package Braden Hansen would eat him up in passing drills, which isn't saying much.

There just seemed to be better talent all around last year. Once you get out of the Rivals Top 15 in this years class you have trouble finding guys that are still highly rated and had a good many offers. Once you get out of the top 15 in this years class you have for the most part guys that have only 1 or 2 offers and are lucky to even break into the national top 75 at their position according to Scout who does more extensive ratings on into even the 200s for some positions.

Does it help out Clemson b/c now he'll be an in-state student. It wouldn't seem like a program like Clemson would even have to worry about such a thing. It's not like they are some DI-AA or DII team like WCU or A&T that have limited financial resources.

Info on Hans Rice:

Rice has offers from Ole Miss, UCF, Southern Miss, South Alabama, Troy, Vanderbilt, and UAB among others. Memphis may have offered as well. Auburn has been recruiting him pretty hard as well but haven't offered. His two favorite colleges growing up were Alabama and Miami. He has a nice 3.8 GPA so he should qualify with ease. His first love is actually basketball, and he even set the school record for hitting the most 3 pointers in one game. He liked the Duke basketball program when he was growing up. If given the chance he'd like to play both sports in college (I guess he could always try out as a walk-on and be a part of the bball team like Darrell Davis did). Rice is a distant cousin of Donovan McNabb.

He played safety during his sophomore year and had 20 tackles and 4 interceptions on a team that went 14-1 and made it to the finals of the 5-A Alabama state playoffs. Rice moved to outside linebacker his junior year (I guess he grew some) and recorded 82 tackles, which included 8 for loss and 2 sacks. Rice also forced 2 fumbles in helping his team post a 9-3 mark. He's considered a raw talent that will need to put some work in the weight room, but he has the height and length that you want in a linebacker. He is able to cover a lot of ground due to him being able to take long strides, which translates well on the football field. Rice is a big hitter.

New Jersey DT Tyson Chandler visited State recently. Chandler is from North Plainfield.

Rivals rates Chandler as a 3* prospect and the #49 DT nationally. Scout rates him as a 2* prospect and the #81 DT nationally. While he is projected as a DT, at 6-6 344 Chandler is big enough that he OT if need be.

I wasn't too surprised about Tariq Edwards. His father played there. I'm guessing his brother Tyrell got an offer as well. Word is that they will greyshirt their first year, which they were ok with. We've been out of it with Nigel-Mitchel Thornton for a little while, especially after we got the commitment from Ryan Cheek.

Now question for all. Ok we missed out on Justin Foxx, but would you all be happy if we got his old teammate Sylvester Crawford instead? Crawford while not rated as high seems like the more physical specimen. And there really isn't that big of a difference in their rating anyway. Foxx is 6-3 215, while Crawford is 6'5 230. That's pretty nice height for DE, and he could be another Manny Lawson/Willie Young type for us.

We still have a number of DEs that we offered that are still on the board. I believe there are 6 total. Duane Chisholm (who probably ends up at Clemson or South Carolina), Izaan Cross, Julius Forte, Clinton Simpkins, Brian Jordan, and Sylvester Crawford. Also there is Jamil Merrell who could play either OLB or DE, but we'd have to offer his twin brother as well for him to come here. There is also the Myers Park DE Brian Johnson who may receive an offer.

In regards to WR recruiting I've heard that we have a very good chance at landing Quintin Payton pending Clemson and South Carolina do not offer. Payton is a tall receiver at 6-4 and has a 4.49 40. He plays for T.L. Hanna in Anderson, which is one of the more well known HS programs in South Carolina. Let's just hope we don't lose him to Duke, as that appears to be a common theme lately.

For all of you that think recruiting isn't going well and are beginning to panic, just remember this stat. Last year at this point we had 9 commitments, and right now we have 7 commitments. That's not too much of a difference, especially considering we can't take nearly as many as we did last year.

Oddly enough neither Rivals or Scout have a photo of him even though they both have evaluated him. Here's a picture I found of him. He's no. 78 in the above pic. He plays on both sides of the ball as an OL and DT for his team Neumann-Goretti. His school plays in the Catholic League and is in the Blue Division. This guy has him in his Top 50 players for the Catholic League's Blue Division and had him as the No. 1 D-I prospect in the Blue Division that wasn't a Senior.

A prospect that is on our radar but hasn't received an offer yet is Delaware CB Lewis Toler. He is holding three offers right now but is receiving serious interest from other schools. Delaware is often overlooked when it comes to football talent even though it usually has good talent considering the size of the state. He has 4.35 speed in the 40. He supposedly really impressed in the camps he attended over the summer. He plays both WR and CB for his high school team.

All in all he had between 15 and 20 offers. Although he is listed as a CB by Scout and Rivals, I agree with ESPN in that he could ultimately end up at Safety.

Story on Haynes includes video interview at the bottom. He definitely has that typical North Georgia country accent, but he is a smart kid carrying a 3.8 GPA.

Northwest's Haynes plans to play at N.C. State

When Northwest Whitfield opens its football season at Southeast on Aug. 29, senior Dean Haynes will have a load of responsibility like never before in his career with the Bruins, starting at both quarterback and defensive back.

But he’ll no longer have the pressure of wondering whether or not he’ll meet his goal of becoming a Division I college football player.

Haynes committed to North Carolina State on Wednesday, taking the Wolfpack up on an offer to join them as a defensive back.

“I’m on cloud nine,” Haynes said. “I feel great because I don’t have any more worries, no more pressure and I got the scholarship I wanted. It just feels like all my work’s paid off.”

Among the factors that sold Haynes on N.C. State were the serious interest coaches showed in him after he attended a camp there in June. An offer was given from the Atlantic Coast Conference school last month and Haynes has made what he considers a solid commitment, although his word is non-binding per NCAA regulations.

“I don’t think other schools will back off, but it would take a lot to change my mind about N.C. State,” Haynes said. “I don’t think anybody really could change my mind.”

Auburn and Georgia had also shown interest, but not to the level of N.C. State — which went 5-7 last season, Tom O’Brien’s first as coach — said Haynes, who found himself attached to the Wolfpack after visiting Raleigh.

“They were the top school,” Haynes said. “As soon as I went to camp, I just fell in love with everything there. They pretty much blew everyone out of the water ... the facilities, the way they treated me, and I really liked (defensive backs coach Mike Reed), he was real cool. I just liked everything about it.” (did I hear talk about our facilities? Fowler is creaming his pants right now.)

Although Haynes saw an occasional series at quarterback as a backup in 2007, his first season at that position, he has been a major contributor to Northwest’s defense over the past two years, earning two straight selections to The Daily Citizen’s All-Area Football Team as a cornerback. During that time, Haynes has tallied 99 tackles and seven interceptions.

He had a game-opening 95-yard kickoff return last year during a loss to Tucker in the second round of the Georgia High School Association’s Class 4A playoffs.

In more than one way, he has been useful to the Bruins in earning two straight postseason appearances.

“In terms of versatility, he’s in the top four or five that I’ve coached, certainly the top echelon,” said Northwest’s Mike Falleur, who has been a head coach since 1992 and is preparing for his seventh season at Northwest.

“He brings so many things to the table that a lot of us can’t do.”

Falleur believes the speedy Haynes — also a track and field standout — will continue to be a versatile player in college.

“I think Dean’s one of those guys that can play a lot of positions in college,” Falleur said. “Corner, safety and if he gets bigger, even outside linebacker, because he’s very physical.

“He runs and catches the ball really well, but they’re recruiting him as a cornerback. I think he’ll do a great job for N.C. State. Dean is one of the best open-field tacklers I’ve ever coached.”

Haynes said he’s confident about his ability to handle two positions this season for the Bruins, who practiced in full pads for the first time on Wednesday. The first day of official practice for GHSA teams was this past Friday, but teams were restricted to helmets and shorts for the early workouts.

“So far, it’s been going great,” Haynes said. “We’ve improved a lot since day one and I’m really looking forward to the new season and the new region.”

Gabriel Henderson of the 2010 class is a guy that has visited recently. He is a dual-threat QB/ATH out of Southeast Raleigh HS. LB Kendall Moore is a 2010 player that we have jumped on early and also attends Southeast. Moore already has a verbal offer from the Pack. Things are looking good for early in-state recruiting with Robert Crisp (who could end up being better than Xavier Nixon), Tony Creecy, Kendall Moore, and now Gabriel Henderson.

I know that stars don't mean crap, but it would be good for the perception of the program if we landed some 4 and 5 star players. Plus a strong Top 25 recruiting class, which is based on the number of highly rated players, would be good for publicity and get the attention of future recruits.

You can develop all the players who flew under the radar but if you're going to compete on the highest level then you have to tap into the blue chip talent pool. Plus, its free positive publicity every time you nab a big time guy.

In my opinion, this bump to #13 OG is just a precursor to Good getting a 4-star rating next month. Burke (regional rankings guy) thinks he's a 4-star player, but he can't insert someone as a 4-star player without inserting him into the top 300 overall list. In order to do that, the national analysts will have to check him out, figure out how high he should be (#290? #200? #75?), and the old #300 will have to get bumped out and knocked down to 3-star status.

So the simplest way to express how Burke feels about him right now is to stick him as the highest 3-star player on the list. After the 4-stars stop at #300 overall, there's no overall ranking, so there's no need to debate for a long time about where exactly he should be. When the next round of rankings come out in a couple of weeks, Good will have the possibility of moving into the top 300 overall and getting a 4-star ranking.
