Moreover, vendors at numerous farmers markets, including the Davenport Farmer's Market and the Ames Farmers' Market, sell arugula directly from farms to consumers. Several Iowa grocery stores also carry arugula; the website of Hy-Vee, a large grocery chain headquartered in, and with four stores in, West Des Moines, Iowa -- approximately 22 miles from Adel, Iowa, where Obama made his arugula remark -- offers tips on cleaning and serving arugula, as well as several recipes featuring it.""

McCain's just an average, down to Earth guy. He had to lay down $273,000 of his hard-earned money for domestic servants last year.

Have you SEEN the price of butlers at Whole Foods lately?

The choice of a new generation.

http://www.slate.com/id/2198198/

Quote :
"[Obama may be the Pepsi candidate, but this has its disadvantages]. The soda is a perpetual runner-up, like Avis or Burger King.

Moreover, Pepsi does not lose out to Coke because its product is inferior. For decades, participants in blind taste tests—the "Pepsi Challenge"—have preferred Pepsi's sweeter, citrusy, slightly less-carbonated flavor. Yet consumers consistently choose Coke in larger numbers, an anomaly usually attributed to Coke's marketing and packaging.

But another theory, argued by Malcolm Gladwell in Blink, is that Pepsi's sweetness appeals more in a sip than over the course of a whole can. For a candidate who earlier this year lost several primaries in states where opinion polls showed him ahead, that is a worrisome analogy. "

this whole "too many houses" thing is going to backfire on Obama. Everybody knows McCain is rich, just as previous presidents have been, whether loved or hated by the left. Everybody also knows that Obama is rich, even though maybe not to the extent of McCain. He's definitely not struggling to make the mortgage payment on a 3 bedroom house and a minivan. Pot, Kettle is holding on line one.

I disagree moron. For a candidate who says he so desperatly wants to talk about the issues and is above negative campaigning... bringing up how many houses someone has has little ammo. Esp when McCain's wife purchased her homes without the help of a felon.

In fact, Im sick of these political campaigns trying to make these rich politicians seem poor to help them relate to the "common man". Its insulting.

Kainen, hahah yes.

But don't be hatin'. I also voted for McCain in the primaries in 2000. Though, by the time the primaries came to NC, he has already "suspended campaigning". So there was no hope, but I liked a lot of what he said.

Can you show me the post in which I indicated that arugula is not grown in Iowa? That's right, you can't, dumbass. I clearly indicated that Obama mentioned Whole Foods and the company lists no location in Iowa on their Web site.

And grocery stores in Iowa might carry pickled hog's ass, too, but that doesn't mean most people eat it. It seems that you're just too stupid to grasp the problem, which was crystallized on the Newsweek cover I posted:

I realize that Obama's "Bubba Gap" upsets some of you and causes even more rabid foaming at the mouth than usual, but don't take it out on me. Take your obviously frantic concern up with your candidate--who is, unfortunately for you, in a tie with "old" McCain in a Democrat year!

Poll: Race for White House tied

Quote :
"The first national poll conducted after Barack Obama publicly named Joe Biden as his running mate suggests that the battle for the presidency between the Illinois senator and John McCain is all tied up.

In a new CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Sunday night, 47 percent of those questioned are backing Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominees, with an equal amount supporting his Republican opponent, McCain."

How is that even possible? It seems like McCain has the momentum for some reason as well, even though Obama is everywhere on TV/Magazines/Newspapers. Craziness.

CNN tries to fit the poll into a narrative/news story that it's a "you didn't pick Hillary" backlash. They are mixing references to polls and engaging in some other sketchy practices/not releasing all the info.

Painting it as a big fight with in the democratic party may increase ratings even if it requires fudging the narrative a little.

I didn't say it was solely racism. But on that note for a second - if you don't think he loses votes that matter in rural Ohio, Michigan, PA, or anywhere else that's a battleground because of his ethnicity you are nuts, in denial, or you're just spinning to spin. NOT SAYING it will cost him the election if McCain wins but he loses alot of lunch pail folks that way. NOT SAYING it's a BLACK THING but don't be ignorant man..race isn't somehow GONE. Here I think you have a situation where a large share of Obama's opponents genuinely don't like him, nothing to do with race, but they get sensitive when they hear the race issue brought up and applied as a central issue..understandably so. And then that fear and overallocation of racism charge bleeding into their reasons, mistaking their dislike of Obama for their own constituted stance. I get that. However, that doesn't then give you or others very strong intellectual ground to in turn overcompensate and dismiss race as a factor for many others in America though that won't vote for him.

Shit, I've got a half dozen family members right now from Burlington and Salisbury, NC that say plainly they aint voting for a black president. In those terms. They dont have qualms about it, I'm to tired to try to protest their racism anyhow.

So be it...whatever, this isn't only it though...just a large chunk of missed opportunity votes.

Other other chunks go back to why I said fear... because it is not only that racial dynamic, it's Obama's upbringing, name, totally different background than any one else running, his age and extremely meteoric rise, his popularity/story attraction, relative inexperience compared to most candidates that run (NOT ALL), associations (particularly reverend wright as the underlying framework), and so forth that is doing him in with voters who would have otherwise voted on him and supported his issues and policy.

If you don't think he gains a huge boost (percentage and turn out) from the minority vote because he is black, YOU are nuts. If you don't believe that a large percentage of young people will vote for him so that they can prove how progressive they are by voting for the black guy, YOU are nuts.

Wow, how low must McCain go? He's starting to sound like Gulianni with 9/11 by using the POW shit so much.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26399647/

Quote :
"BURBANK, Calif. - John McCain, who often invokes his ordeal as a Vietnam war prisoner to show his devotion to his country as he runs for U.S. president, drew on the experience again on Monday -- this time to deflect sniping over the number of houses he owns.

McCain's Democratic rival Barack Obama last week accused the Republican senator of being out of touch with ordinary people after he was unable to say in an interview how many houses were owned by him and his wife Cindy, a wealthy heiress to a beer distributorship.

In an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, McCain, 71, said his priority was to keep Americans in their homes in tough economic times.
Story continues below ?advertisement

Then he recalled his Vietnam experience.

"I spent 5 1/2 years in a prison cell without -- I didn't have a house. I didn't have a kitchen table. I didn't have a table. I didn't have a chair," he said.

"I spent those 5 1/2 years ... not because I wanted to get a house when I got out." "

^ This is "low"? Obama is attacking McCain's wife for how many homes she owns in an attempt to tarnish McCain's character (apparently being rich makes you a bad person and a bad President...unless you're a Democrat like FDR, JFK, or John Kerry--Obama is just "middle class") and he's saying "I don't have anything to prove, because the strength of my character has already been tested."

Sounds like a reasonable response to me.

No one is attacking his wife, that is just you taking something and running to the end of the world with it. Unless the man has an extremely shallow and worthless marriage he and his wife both 'own' those houses, regardless of their asset split. Now you may say, 'he doesn't technically own them so hah I win' but that's not the point and you're being a dick trying to argue it.

Quote :
""I don't have anything to prove, because the strength of my character has already been tested." "

And that's a bullshit cop-out from any politician. If he doesn't know how many houses he and his wife control then he's obviously got some issues. He realizes this and is using his POW experience as a cop-out for something completely unrelated.

Now now...you know just as well as I know, that had the republicans caught Obama saying he didn't know how many houses he owned, the paranahs would have been let loose and the republicans would drive a tractor trailer through that opening....regardless if they were (hypothetically speaking of course) owned by Michelle Obama or not.

This has nothing to do with the fact that Cindy McCain is worth millions, it has to do with the contrast of McCain, the republican candidate for president not knowing how many houses he owns which is audacious contrasting with the mortgage crisis going on in America. For low and middle income voters, the very image or sound of it is beyond being a gaffe...he sounds out of touch and disconnected. It's not the amount of money he has, it's the fact that he can't relate to lower or middle class times because he's never had to live them...he grew up the son of very high up military admirals and married into his money now. Granted he served his coutnry and paid a pretty terrible price in Vietnam, no one is taking that away from him. In fact, they'll do all they can to remind us every single time he speaks.

But, bottom line he reinforces the 'out of touch' notion when now he seems to have so much in terms of wealth and property that he can't keep track. It's as simple as that and you know it..I appreciate yours and the McCain campaign's attempt at political Aikido...but you can't redirect this and victimize Cindy like they were going after her this whole time. That's absurd. Again, if tables were turned you guys would have a frigging field day.

^ that is a political analysis of the gaffe. You're saying people will think McCain sounds out of touch, regardless of whether being filthy-stinking rich actually makes one unable to govern during hard economic times (does that same logic apply to FDR or is he different?).

And franly, I think your political analysis is a little off. After 1 entire week of this housing business, McCain and Obama are still tied in the polls. Now, I'm sure you'll say people were "distracted" by the Olympics, but it isn't like the Dems haven't been trying to push this like day-old bread. The impact of gaffes only gets weaker with time because they receive less and less coverage, if no one noticed it by now, most won't notice it by November.

my in-laws also think he's "evil" and earlier in the year, I think they thought he was a Muslim too. But a couple days ago i was helping my mo-in-law with her email, and I happened to catch an email that she sent to her pastor. It was a video she received about Oprah, and it basically condemned Oprah as an evil mouthpiece for Obama (not that I'm defending Oprah, but i don't exactly think she's evil....). I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Pastor wrote back with a very rational and well-reasoned email, asking my mother-in-law to watch it again and keep an eye out for hyperbole and exaggeration, and see if it really seemed reasonable, or if it was just a scare tactic. Then he made reference to an email he had sent her earlier in the year, concerning basically the same thing about Obama, indicating to me that he is rational enough to know that Obama is not a Muslim, and of course my in-laws will listen to whatever he says.

moron Do you even watch the news? Obama/Biden are saying the problem is that McCain didn't remember how many houses he owned...because he's got so fucking many of them!

Did you not see Biden's speech, after the announcement he would be VP, where he said that John McCain doesn't sit at his kitchen table worrying about his mortgage paying the bills? That he would have to pick one of 7 different kitchen tables before he could even start???

The entire argument being put forward is that McCain is so rich he is out of touch with regular voters. THAT IS THE ISSUE. The reason Dems have not brought it up as frequently (news flash, they've been talking about this for months) is they never had a gaffe this good.

I never said that it would be super effective, but I still maintain it was a pretty big gaffe from even an objective point of view. Who knows what takes hold in the polls....I'm not a political analyst, I don't know what voters are looking for or which messages take hold.

I'm just explaining how it was a legit avenue to pursue those comments...there's no one that would just ignore the angle of attack he opened up and try to salt what they could out of it. No one, at least no politician I've ever seen. And please spare me but he's different/the messiah/the one parody lines, as I can already predict them in response. I'm not phased
