all the people here that keep talking about how ridiculous the show has become....read this.

this show is based on books. fantasy books. fantasy books. as in, the person who wrote them used her imagination and made up some crazy shit about vampires and werewolves and shape-shifters and threw it all together with some humans, threw in some sex, threw in a really bad Cajun accent....and BAM. a really awesome series of books was born, and from that - a television show.

of course this show is ridiculous and silly and far-reaching and -worthy....it's based on a book that encompassed all those things. vamps and weres and all those things are silly made-up stuff, so how could the show be anything but that?

if you're looking for something less ridiculous, how about choosing a show that isn't based on the lives of the undead.

Thumper, it's the same with Lost. You're given a reality of the show and you expect the show to follow the rules so that you can predict what belongs and what doesn't. Vampires exist and they have certain abilities and certain weaknesses. When you just give up and say "It's fantasy, they can do whatever you want" then what's the difference between "everything imagined itself into existence" and a MacDonald's falling out of the sky and polka-dotted elephants parading around?

There must be some cohesion or it won't be interesting. We have to be able to imagine that this world is possible, even with the vampires and werewolves and crazy shit.

I'm not saying that True Blood has bought the farm like Lost has, but going from "sookie can read minds" to "mortals can imagine themselves into immortality and everything is imagined" in less than 2 seasons is a dangerous pace.

Also, plz to bring back gratuitous nudity that isn't gross.

well i get that it's based in fantasy land where anything is possible but for show purposes its a little silly when they're like

Ep. 1 - oh yeah Vampires really do exist
Ep. 10 - oh yeah Shapeshifters really do exist
Ep. 20 - oh yeah the creatures of Greek mythology really do exist
Ep. 25 - oh yeah Werewolves really do exist

I can't wait for episode 32 to find out who really exists at this point, please say it's santa claus (better if it was Santa Claws though and he fucks people up)

Comparing the books and the show is kind of silly at this point. The queen does not even appear until the 6th or so book and never has such a crazy rant about maenads. And the maenad doesn't even play that big of part in the second book, well compared to what is going down in the show.

The show is obviously trying to pack in a lot of action from events and characters in different books and therefore has to have characters spit out crazy talk to catch everyone up real quick as to what in the hell is going on. Well at least this is what seems to be happening imo... still love it though.

not just that, but since the books are told from Sookie's perspective only in order to have a show where we can get involved in other characters' lives and the lil' side stories, we have to branch out in to the world of other characters or life beyond Sookie wouldn't exist or matter

Of course I will. I'm honestly not at all excited about it though. I definitely won't be watching week-to-week when season 3 comes out though. I'm not trying to say the show is absolutely terrible and can never be saved, but it's just not for me. I was very entertained by season 1, but season 2 just hasn't done it for me. That's the last I'll say about my opinion of the show as I don't want to keep clogging up the discussion for people who enjoy the show.

How has lost "bought the farm?" Feel free to kick that over the lost thread.

I think the imagine/will itself to be stuff is fine. I think it's dangerous in that it will deter people who can't get into fantasy from watching however. - that being said, we don't know it's actually true simply because a character said it or believes it. These vampires are old and hard to kill, not omniscient. Shit, how many different religious belief systems are there? Are they true simply because one person believes they are? These are the thoughts of one, seemingly jaded and aloof vampire. There's no reason to think that the religious/spiritual/whatever beliefs of vampires are any different than that of humans.... varying, and some are more grounded in the known than the unknown.

Werewolves were mentioned in one of the very first episodes, as were shifters of other types. Bill talked to Sookie about both around when they first met I believe. The only new thing since the first few episodes has been the maenad. Although, either Bill or Sam mentioned that there are "other creatures" out there at some point.

While I think it's perfectly fine within the scope of the show and what they've set up already, I don't really want it to get overboard with all of the types of "beings" either. I'd prefer it to stick to vampires, some shifters here and there, and hopefully a werewolf sooner than later. I'm not too interested in much more than that. And I think it starts to detract a little from the bread and butter of the show/story... vampires. Maybe the books aren't really vampire books, but just Sookie encountering random creatures (haven't read them, so i don't know). But the entire first season did make it out to be a vampire show. So if they're going to have these other creatures, I'd prefer them to not be the focus of an entire season. Or at least not as big as Maryanne... that plot has dragged and blown kangaroo balls as far as I'm concerned.

This last episode was kind of boring and the writing seemed inconsistent with other episodes. Jason, while funny at times, really lost the cool/calm, thoughtfulness he'd shown/developed in recent episodes. Some of his actions just didn't seem to go along with that.

I also don't get why Sookie just laid down with the guy on the floor. Thus far, she hasn't proved to be cunning enough to have laid down with the intent of calming him down and hitting him on the head all along. And why not just start off with "let's fuck" instead of laying down for that long with him? She didn't try to get away from him at all. Which may make sense if she didn't want to make too much noise. And it may even make sense for her to have laid down, not having a plan... but then thinking of what to do. But Sookie has been very reactionary so far, it just didn't quite fit imo.

unfortunately, IMO, the writers have gotten away from her wit and ability to fend for herself and have really harped on this BEEL!! SAVE ME!! damsel which is REALLY annoying. S1 we had her sneak up and take out the Ratrays then later kill Rene, so we know she's got it in her. S2, all we've had is Sookie get all redneck gangsta (stupidly might I add) on Eric and Lorena. She's only had one moment of wit when she calls out to Barry.

She should be growing as a character and away from the damsel cause we know she's capable. I think this episode was purposefully served as her finally taking charge and stepping away from the damsel by knocking out Lettie Mae and Mike Spencer.

She seems to only act this way when Bill is no where near...

I really hate them as a couple btw.

She has been a damsel in distress from day 1.

The most she has done is get the jump on a couple of drunk rednecks in a parking lot. (who she later had to get saved from by Bill).

She killed Renee after Sam saved her and took his attention and beating off her.

Her character has been pretty consistent in having to be saved because of her mouth getting her into trouble.

If anything she has shown some pretty terrible judgement and hypocrisy. Who knows how she will grow as she discovers whatever powers they are hinting at but to think she was ever able to fend for herself or hasnt been a damsel in distress from day one is pretty laughable.

I've not read the books though, so I dont have any pre-concieved notion of who she is impacting how she is being portrayed in the series.

Yeah my whole deal w/ Sookie and my "unfortunately...is REALLY annoying" sentence is b/c of my preconceived notion of how the series has made Sookie versus the books. The instances I mention of S1 are only semi-resourceful in the series, and S2 has really gotten away from that and made her even more in to a damsel...the worst being her BEEL! dependency. It really bugs me to no end. She has her moments of damsel in the books sure, but it's not this bad...and are usually warranted.

She does have terrible judgment and is most definitely a hypocrit in the series...her scene in ep 9 and 10 telling Jason to use his head I just had to laugh b/c she's not either.

Like I said, I'm hoping that this past episode of her finally coming up with a plan on the fly and doing something is her character growing and getting away from that damsel...

And as far as the Ratray attack on Sookie goes (in the series)...like Eric said, how convenient that Bill got Sookie to drink his blood to "save her life"

Yeah I hear you.

Not to mention her throwing a fit when Bill kept his making of Jessica from her and then turning around and telling Jessica not to tell Bill when she agreed to take her to her familys home.

That example though I think was intentional from the writers.

Your example with Jason I am not so sure isnt just a poor job by the writers or an oversight.

Definitely intentional to show how shitty of a relationship they have. Lies, piss poor communication, arguments, high handedness, belittling, possessiveness, jealousy, verbal and physical abuse ("There's no excuse for domestic violence")...they are a poisonous match.

Yep, I'm huge Eric fan books and show Eric.
The bonus is I think Alexander Skarsgard was cast well as Eric, and has done a great job of bringing him to life.

And I don't dislike Bill; I just don't like Bill and Sookie together. Although, I like book Bill more than show Bill.

I did have a question.

At the end of season 1 when Bill shows back up and says 'I Fed'; do we ever find out what/who he fed on? We were left thinking it may have been lafayette but that wasn't the case and I don't remember them resolving that.

^^ was that in reference to the uncle that molested her? I don't remember when that happened exactly, but it was towards the end of the season - that's where the money came from that sent Jason to jesus vampire killing camp.

No he killed the uncle earlier in the season.

What I am wondering about is after he got charred trying to save Sookie from Renee he shows back up 100% healed and says that he fed.

They end it trying to get you to wonder if he fed on lafayette; but they never say what he fed on.

re: the egg

someone on another board had a pick up, that while small and might not mean anything, could play out in the end in a big way. When Sam arrives at Andy's hotel, the show Andy is watching on TV (Dirty Jobs, which I originally noticed b/c of Mike Rowe's voice--word) featured ostriches.

So...this is how I've felt the end will go down, but now even more so with that little pick up and it finally makes the egg thing make at least SOME sense.

Bill offers Sam to Maryann. Sam does get stabbed (aw), but the god doesn't come. Maryann loses it, and takes after Sookie since she's got this zappy power to try her instead. Maryann knocks Bill out in the process. Eric flies in just at this moment, and gets Sam to drink his blood so he can heal. Sookie running away is all "BEEEEEEL!" but Eric flies in just in time to rescue her instead (mmhmm). Sam shifts in to "the god who comes" which is either a bull (my original thought) or an ostrich (prolly more than likely, esp since he's seen the show and would have an "imprint"). Maryann is like "oh! so sam was the perfect vessel--yay!!" and thinks her god has finally arrived. Eric, Jason, Andy, and anyone else not zombie-fied all work together and kill Maryann. THE END.

and Eric being a hero has nothing to do with him earning a spot in Sookie's heart...it's still his actions at the FOTS and mourning over Godric that's got her thinking of the softer side of Eric. But now Sookie will think less of Bill by him offering up someone she cares about as a sacrifice. Poorly played, Bill.

Did a quick google search on ostriches and mythology. Apparently it's significant in Egyptian mythology and the afterlife (what Maryann desires most!) http://www.egyptianmyths.net/feather.htm

"Usually, the feather was a symbol of Ma'at, the goddess of truth and order. The goddess was always shown wearing an ostrich feather in her hair. The feather by itself was her emblem.
In art, the feather was shown in scenes of the Hall of Ma'at. This hall is where the deceased was judged for his worthiness to enter the afterlife. The seat of the deceased's soul, his heart, was weighed on a balance against the feather of Ma'at. If the heart was free from the impurities of sin, and therefore lighter than the feather, then the dead person could enter the eternal afterlife. "

That and Maryann is fully aware of Sam's shifting powers, so why would she just forget everything when he turns into a bull/ostrich? Not only that, she's aware that Sam used this ability to pull almost the exact same trick on the idiot townsfolk.

That would be a pretty tough pill to swallow. Honestly they could just have maryanne fall into a black hole and get back to vampire plots and I'd be more happy.

RESPONSE TO SPOILER

Yeah I've seen a screencap for that scene w/ Sam talking to CH and Tara's in the background...Merlotte's looks like it's back to normal too so one can assume that the maenad victory was successful w/ the best being that Sam doesn't die
additional screencap spoiler after the jump

I've also seen a screencap with Bill and Sookie that is more than likely post maenad victory...and the Team Eric in me DO NOT LIKEY

just got caught up with the last 2 episodes. I think this was the season finale so I was really confused with how slow it was going, and how nothing was getting resolved.

but anyway..... I hope the finale redeems this season, which started off so strong but has gone downhill fast in the 2nd half. Especially the last 2 episodes - I hate it when writers just put in tons of shit that don't make sense just to set the characters up in the various precarious positions they want them in for the final episode. Practically none of the storylines for the last 2 eps have made any logical sense and they have been out of character for many of the characters.

So far, the first 2 seasons of True Blood have been kind of a bell curve: S1 started out really cheesy, but ended up awesome. S2 started out even more awesome, but is about to end very lamely....

The problem is there hasn't been enough story for a full season. They have stretched maryanne far too long to occupy the majority of the secondary characters while the godric line was resolved.

No, because there's a marathon during opening weekend of the NFL and second week of college football. I realize the season ends on Sunday, so it's perfectly reasonable. I was being sort of a jerk, I'm sorry. The show is geared towards women though.
