Why would you spend $500 dollars on that set when you can download the flac files for free and spend that money on upgrading your speakers?

Some people.

Yeah but the flac files don't come in a 2 foot tall box with a drawing of a penis on it

Probably the same reason I have three copies of the Breeders Off You EP and two of them are still in the shrinkwrap.

Because I'm a huge nerd.

True that. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't given up on resisting leaks and waiting for release dates, but you can be damn sure when I hear something I like via digital sources, I go and buy the real thing when it's available.

Pixies are my favorite band. I haven't decided what I'm going to do, but to act like this is not damn tempting despite the cost would be a flat-out lie.

I'm always interested to talk about the difference between audiophile music-lovers and those who are not audiophiles. I have three sets of speakers...old Advents, a Creative Acoustics set from the '70s that I had reconed, and some small Beovoxs. The Advents are a beat up and even break up a little at certain frequencies/volumes, but I like that. My neighbor has a quad of $2000 studio monitors that he swears by for their transparency, and he makes fun of me for using speakers that do anything but produce sound as faithfully as possible...I don't care, I like the warmth.

Perhaps it has something to do with being a musician, as I also prefer guitar speakers like Blues that do weird things at breakup, but that's just a theory. Also, I wouldn't suggest that my preference is better than my neighbor's, just different.

Anyway, FLAC files hold no romance for me, and to me rock music is just as much about romance as anything else.

Giant artwork, mixtapes, and things you can hold are romantic.

Also, hilarity from Frank Black:

Quote :
"I was recently quoted about the state of the music business, and I was saying it should be kind of a $5 world right now. Records and tickets should be cheap, given the overpricing of the recent years and the state of the world economy. But now, this box comes out and I feel like the biggest shithead in the world."

$500 is insane. You have most of those songs, don't you? It's like reissues and remasters of all the studio albums. I could see a huge fan buying it at say around...$300, and even that would be ridiculous, but $500 is like a car payment...

Thats pretty much how I am. I'll be the first to admit I don't resist links hardly at all and I also haven't purchased every single album I've gotten digitally. However, I do make it a point to purchase as many as I can afford. My first rule is that basically any local/somewhat regional band that I even remotely like, I purchase their album if I want to hear it. After that, I have a list of "favorites" or bands that mean a lot to me, bands ive listened to for a long time, etc. that I purchase every album from. My third rule comes down to how much I enjoyed an album. If it is something I don't see myself listening to more than a few times, I probably won't be buying it. If it is something I really enjoy that wasnt part of my 1st or 2nd rule, I make every attempt to justify its purchase in my budget.

Even though I listen to my music 99% of the time via my ipod, I still love actually getting a record an the artwork.

I have all of them, many times over. I even have all the video content, the videos and the Brixton Academy show from '91 on DVD and VHS.

And yet, TWO FEET TALL!

There's also the matter of a few hundred pieces of new Vaughan Oliver artwork, but I don't expect that to mean much to anyone who's not obsessed with 4AD.

Just get it.

I have two copies of an early/rare Cave In/Piebald 7", just because. That is nowhere near as excessive as a 500 dollar Pixies box set, but redundancy never hurt anyone's collection.

it is so bad. so so so so bad.

[Edited on June 17, 2009 at 2:39 AM. Reason : ^ OH BABE. you copycat. ]

edit again: at least sky blue sky had like, impossible germany. wilco (THE ALBUM) has 0 redeeming songs. the fact that there is a song called wilco (the song) knocks off even more points.

This is a great blog for fans of shoegaze/dreampop. Has a bit of everything: both new and old stuffz, a bunch of peel sessions and live recordings, and some featured international artists:

Lukas Kasha - Revelations

I just found out about this band a week ago, and it turns out they just released an album this month. Unfortunately I don't have a download link, but you guys are resourceful (though being Norwegian and virtually unknown does not make them easy to search for, relatively). Also, they've got practically the entire album streaming from their myspace music page.

I've seen a couple torrents for the album but no direct downloads. Maybe one of you will pass by it while searching across the internet. But whatever, my friends.

I for one used an iTunes gift card to buy it (thanks to the slightly odd gift-giving habits of some of my relatives).

I hate seeing local music leak ... but I guess it's one way to get the word out. I kinda see it as flattering that folks outside the Triangle are taking notice.

Anyway, I encourage everyone to pick this up when it comes out. It really is phenomenal, especially "Matthew."

It's namely the second half of the record that gives me that impression that they were "trying" for that. Parts of it reminded me of the Sun Giant EP and also, Woods.

Indie folk-rock/lo-fi pop, full of 3 part harmonies that spend 40 minutes trying to recall Brian Wilson. Only, the Ganglians album seems to really drag on and loses my interest as it nears the end.

Don't get me wrong, it's a backhanded compliment as I've loved both of the Fleet Foxes EP's and the full length; I just think it's the same formula a lot of bands are using right now (as Ernie alluded to), and Ganglians don't stand out the way that FF stood out to me.

After a few more listens, I like it a bit more. I still think the lyrics are horrendous.... almost nonsensical in stretches, but I think the composition is good and I love the vocals. I don't skip it on my ipod or anything, I just don't think it's exceptional... at least not yet.

not to be a dick, but i swear you are listening to something other than the ganglians album

because there are barely any similarities between them and fleet foxes
