You shouldn't go to NYC expecting to make it after college was the whole point.

Anybody interested in PR/marketing/communication fields, be sure to check out the PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) Web site. They have a job center there where new positions are posted and you can apply through the site.

It's free to register, and it's where I found my current job. I was called for an interview two days after I submitted the application, so I can vouch for it being a legit site that could lead to some real opportunities.

I'm sure most people know already, but no harm in double-checking.

be aware of these fags:
http://career-network.com/
They tell you they like your resume and want to contact you for an interview, but apparently it's all a phishing scam and they just want your telephone # and personal information.

My story=good job straight out of college in '06, quit work 6 months later to return to school, graduate degree drags on for a while whilst working part time, now deciding i want to go back into research and can't find a job. Soooo, i'm stuck at my "part-time" job with no end in sight. Life sucks right now.

I didn't know entry level meant 2+ years of experience.

Shoot me.

It's amazing isn't it?

I saw ones listed as entry level with 2-10 years of experience as a requirement.

If you did a coop you might have about that much experience under your belt, but whether or not they would count it is another story.

Oh it's not a real job just some intern work they did while they were in school. *toss*

i am hopefully not going to be joining this thread soon

my company just posted an ad hiring for my position. there are 8 of us with the exact same title, and 4 of us are underperforming.

are you guys finding it easier to find jobs now than say Feb? or is it just as tough or harder?

just trying to prepare myself for the worst

FYI, they just do that to weed out the people who don't have enough gumption to apply for the job, anyway. If the job ad says 2-X years, then new grads should apply for that just like any other entry-level opening. They want pussies to self-select themselves out of the process.

The reason the ad is written like that is because the company is hoping they hit the jackpot and get a mythical candidate that exceeds their expectations but will still work for entry-level pay.

Yea. I kind of get this part. I saw an ad that said something to the effect of "we want a wise college graduate or an experienced designer with a youthful touch" or something. I took the youthful part to mean shitty pay.

They're also selecting for the illiterate and dishonest. But you're right. I gots to eat. I can be illiterate and dishonest if necessary.

By design, the co-op is supposed to last 3 rotations which is 1 year of experience in total. I did that, but not in the right field. So... 0 years experience.

So I officially earned my reasons for posting in this thread this week. Shitty part is the layoffs werent so the company could function like most are, it was so they could maintain a profit. But hey, they are "Here 2 Help"...
Honestly, I hated that place and have no interest in returning to anything remotely like it. Seriously thinking of going back to school to start over, although there is really no field that stands out above any other. Curious if anyone has done something similar and what theyve done.

best situation ever.

worked for a company whose payroll always was a pay period behind current working pay period, and got laid off two weeks ago with a month's severance. secured a new position paying $15k more, starting in two weeks, in essence before any of my months worth of severance or 3 pay periods of vacation have to be touched.

recession sucks. my life does not.

Yesterday, the contract for my job ended. We have 27 people on this contract. We were on a 6 month contract with Schering Plough doing document indexing. We were all pretty sure it would get extended another 6 months. That wasn't the case. They only could bring 15 out of the 27 people back til the end of July. Fortunately, I was one of the 15 people. I still got a job til the end of July. I don't know whats going to happen afterwards. It may get extended again or may not.
I've already started looking for something else.. hopefully perm. I applied for a job at a medical office yesterday I would like to get.

^^ Yeah, I can't think of anything better than trying to kiss some douchebags ass and getting stepped on like a little bitch every day of your life by people with far more money and power than you have.

Maybe in 20 years you'll be one of those guys.

But, gg if that is the life you want, I'm not one to judge.

I was told 2 hours before I was about to be released from a project that they were keeping me on for a bit longer, but they couldn't tell me how long.

fyi, be careful with that. the last company i was with, they let go about 30 people (1/3 of the entire company) at the beginning of december. in early january they told us they were gonna get some money and wanted me and my team to come back, which we did. as they struggled to get funding, we kept working, since they told us they were "this close" to getting money. by the end of february when we finally left again, we had gotten about half a paycheck since december.

iow, keep looking for a new job.

i have an interview tomorrow with a staffing/recruiting/temp company in fashion. the lady that contacted me wasn't totally descriptive in the job (she gave me some basics). i've been trying to not think about it mentally (besides agonizing over WTF to wear). i'm not sure if this is a good thing or bad. (i either overdo it and psych myself out or go in there unprepared. )

so...long story short? wish me luck. it's been ages since i've had a real interview (and i've only had a few).

--- side comment ---

EuroTitToss, your story sounds sooorta like mine. I graduated in December, and there was an opportunity for a paid, open-ended internship up in NYC. I needed the experience (only one other internship on the resume), and in the apparel design field, work experience is especially important. I figured I could find a FT job once here. Unfortunately, they had to make corporate cuts suddenly, and I got screwed. Now I have all the bills piling up and just hope that I can find something ASAP.

All the friends I have who are in (and have stayed in) the fashion design field (5 i can think of) got their start by busting their asses on their own, selling their own stuff, and working up to good clients. About half are still doing their own thing by choice, the others landed pretty varied jobs at various baller firms.

Not saying it's the only way to go, but I know it got them through a few years of struggling to get "found" or get feet in the door at big-name houses.

^^ Answer the question - are you still the same TAC bitch you were years ago working 80 hrs a week or have you actually moved up at all in the company? After you answer that, I'd like to know, are you that same goofy bitch I met years ago in the RBC center parking lot when I thought to myself "oh, umm, not nearly as cool as I was expecting given the internet persona you've worked so hard to craft for yourself"?

I mean you're talking shit to me about being unemployed in the worst downturn in 70 years. Do you really think that bothers me?

I've got a stock window on one screen, the Tour de France on the other, and I'm working on some 500 level grad school material IN MY FUCKING BOXERS. Yeah, I'm not actually making my savings account go up, but I'm enjoying the hell out of this break between careers. It's a helluva lot better than setting up tests and answering to screaming customers about why the last update took their switch down.

if you have to know, yes, i've moved up to a comfortable 40ish hour per week role, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Secondly, I've never met you.

I'm talking shit to you because you're hating on people who are getting jobs. You're a lot like my father-in-law. He's a relatively smart guy, but he thinks he's better than everyone else and has been unemployed for the last 10 years because he's "too good to work for anyone else." This attitude has enabled him to fail at life.

You can polish the turd that is your life as much as you want, but I'd much rather do what I do and make what I make than trade places with your ass.

We absolutely met as I used to park in the 4000s (or 3000s, it's been a few years now) on the backside of the RBC lot and am best friends with a former Phi Delt that introduced us. I thought you'd be a relatively cool guy based on the image you try and portray here, the image of one that is somehow "above" the wolfweb. But I could tell in about 10 seconds that no, you were in fact one goofy fucker. I mean, I don't have a problem with it, it gives me a little chuckle every time you try to come off as a cool cat on this site.

You also probably forgot that time you said you'd meet me at Crabtree for some mountain biking and we're too fucking inconsiderate to call and let me know you had bailed. You're a real winner.

Quote :
"I'm talking shit to you because you're hating on people who are getting jobs."

I'm not hating on people getting jobs you assbag. I'm hating on people that are coming to this thread to gloat. It's pretty amateurish (or, par for the wolfweb) and those of us who are victims of circumstances should be more or less entitled to talk a little shit back.

What the fuck are you talking about? I look at the jobs that are around here and see that my skillset doesn't match and I am taking 500+ level courses (on my own dime) to bring that skillset up...and I'm too good to work for anyone else?

I don't think anyone asked you to trade places. It would be great if you had at least half a clue before you started commenting about this shit though.
