Why are people continually calling me a liberal because I voted against it? Republican Liberty Caucus was pretty hardcore against this... oh, but they are classical liberal. THOSE FILTHY LIBERAL REPUBLICAN BASTARDS!

correct me if i'm wrong, but if a civil union is recognized by the local governing body, are employers not required to recognize it (where applicable) as if it were a traditional marriage? I'm all for holding out hope that many companies will choose to do so out of a sense of social purpose, but you know a significant fraction wont--specifically, those employing the low-income that need it most

now ultimately, as snewf said, I'd like to see all marriage "benefits" dissolved but that's a different issue altogether

Yes, but it's really more of a "gay civil union" thing. You certainly can't have a company providing benefits for gay domestic partnerships (which many do without any regard to the law of the state they're in, because nothing restricts them from doing so) and not for straight domestic partnerships. So no, you won't see any change whatsoever.

Edit: I should add, in the case that your work for that sort of company (recognizing gay partnerships). It's just easier to provide benefits for all "civil unions" unilaterally without getting into distinctions.

Perhaps some companies might see it as a reason to drop benefits for civil unions across the board, but I highly doubt it. They'll get dragged into court so fast by the minority AND majority.

Which is ultimately why this thing will get shot down.

so if i'm in a common law marriage, as of now recognized by the state of nc, that is dissolved as per A1 ALL companies across the state will continue to pay my spouse and children benefits?

edit: and I hope you're right, if for no other reason that such vague language could be considered legally viable

I'd be willing to bet they still will. Either out of a sense of obligation or because of the massive uproar when it happens.

No, just dumb.

Voting percentages only reflect the percentage of people who voted for an amendment.

It says nothing about the percentage of different parties that voted for the amendment.

If 100 people voted on the amendment, and 60 people voted for and 40 against, that says nothing about the party makeup of that. How do you not know if 80 Republicans showed up to vote?

Well then Democrats certainly had a tough time getting out the vote today huh? Either that or NC is 60/40 Republican. Which explains why we voted for Obama.

I guarantee you a LARGE number of the "for" votes came from black Democrats.

Gay man claims spouse for health benefit. Gets jailed for fraud. therefore he was put in jail for the gay.

To quote our long lost friend guth from facebook:

If you voted any of these Republicans into office I hope you realize what you did. Even if you are one of the many Republicans in my timeline who voted against this I hope you realized that you still helped cause this. I hope that you look at your party and are ashamed that they turned their back on the citizens of this state to appease a national interest group, I hope you are ashamed at what the party has become. If you helped put any of these people into office I hope you and realize what you did and I hope you help get them out of office. So disappointed in this state tonight.

What is the difference between voting for this amendment because of religion and the Taliban suppressing women because of religion?

What ever happened to separation of church and state?

To be fair... simply passing a law based on a religious principle does not constitute a church/state violation in and of itself. Saying "marriage is between a man and a woman" is no more a church/state violation than a law against theft ("thou shalt not steal").

If A1 forced Bible readings in school, that would be a little different.

That just makes it an easier law to justify. I don't agree with the amendment, but the fact of the matter is defining marriage a certain way is not a violation of church/state separation.

Making women wear a burka wouldn't necessarily be a violation of separation of church and state either.
