You assume the gov't is the best mechanism to do that. I don't. I lived with gov't (military) healthcare and I can tell that you will get bottom of the barrel and most inconvenient heatlthcare imaginable.
I think smart and healthy people are great. I also think people need to directly pay for services they want and need. That increases competition, brings down prices and reduces waste. In the case of health care it would unclog emergency rooms of all the freeloaders with the sniffles.

^^well, I certainly agree with your last statement. however, his counterpart won't do any better, just do bad in a different way.

The point is, is that the federal government cannot and will not provide a properly run, properly funded, unwasteful, and genuinely, universally, good entitlement program. There is no reason to raise taxes to pay for the idea. All we will get is increased spending, a half hearted program, an abused program, and even more government control over private lives.
