I worked somewhere that put the corp email inside an app, all of the enterprise stuff was inside of that (email, contacts, tasks, etc), the IT password policy was only for the app. They could nuke all of that remotely, but not control/access anything else on my device like pictures, text, web history, etc. That was pretty fair since it was my device and they were just securing their data that could be be accessed from my device. The app kind of sucked but it was better than them having the ability to snoop in or delete MY phone...
I have had a few jobs with company provided phones but I only used that phone for work, too much crazy shit goes on with people getting fired for IT policy violations or getting snooped on. Nobody at work needs to see what you are sending your wife and your friends and shit. Having a separate personal phone seems like a no brainier since pretty much every phone takes the same charger now. 7/29/2013 6:55:32 PM |

I didn't check if anyone posted it, but here is how to force the 4.3 Update on any Android Device (Since it "Officially" launched today, although you could get it days ago if you really wanted):
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/google-android/3461225/get-android-43/
Quote : | "Step 1. First check what version of Android your Nexus tablet is running. From the home screen, pull down from the top right of the screen and choose Settings. Scroll down to About tablet, then look under Android version. You'll most likely find Android 4.2.2 here, or perhaps Android 4.1 if you've never updated your tablet.
Step 2. Next, check whether Google has already made available the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for your tablet. In the same menu, tap on System updates. The next screen will either inform you that an update is available, or state when the tablet was last updated. If no update is available, tap Check now.
Chances are you'll find that still no Android 4.3 update is available. At this point you can sit back and wait a few days for the new flavour of Jelly Bean to appear, or you can force your tablet to download the update.
Step 3. Return to the Settings menu and choose Apps. Using the tabs above the list of apps installed on your device change the view from Downloaded apps to All apps. Scroll down to and select Google Services Framework. Tap on Clear data.
Step 4. Revisit Settings, System updates. You'll find that your Nexus tablet thinks it was last updated in 1970, long before it even existed. Tap Check now to see whether the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update is now available. If it isn't, repeat step 3 until it is. We had to clear the data from the Google Services Framework five times to get this to work, but some people have reported that it worked first time.
Step 5. Eventually, you'll be greeted with an Android 4.3 System Update. Tap Restart & install to download and install the 160.3MB file.
Step 6. Your Nexus tablet will automatically restart with Android 4.3 installed. You can check this as you did in step 1, via Settings, About tablet, Android version. With that done, you can start looking forward to Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie." |

Except I bought the new one when it came out. You bought the older one as the new one was coming out simply because you could finance it when you could have gotten the new one from Best Buy and still financed it for 6 months.
Hell you could have gotten the new one and tried it out for 2 weeks then returned it and gotten the older one if you still wanted it.
I've got the two sitting in front of me right now. The difference in screen resolution and quality/brightness is ridiculous. The new one looks waaaaay better. Not to mention the new one is quite a bit faster.
-In fact you could probably return that POS right now and get the new one and stop trying to justify your bad decision.

Well now I finally have 4.3 rooted, hard to find time to read XDA when you work over 60 hours a week.
and neodata, the only bad decision I made was not having a data plan on my phone and getting the 3G N7. I could care less about the ppi on a 7" screen going up. Obviously I could return it, but I don't give a shit about the new one. Like I said, if it had a Tegra 4 in it, I would have waited for it. I know it was a joke. You just bought the old Nexus 7 at a really bad time. It's amusing you keep trying to back up your decision. It doesn't matter what the specs are on the new one the fact is it's way faster and the screen is pretty spectacular. The only logical reason you didn't get the new one is because you didn't want to spend the extra money ($70 extra for the 32GB - as you say you got the 32GB 1st gen for $199) which is fine. You just need to admit that. I for one think the extra $70 is entirely worth it for a much more powerful device. But if you're on a budget than $70 is a lot.
Plus your logic, "hey the new one isn't as fast as I want it to be so I'm going to get the old one even though I know it's way slower" is pretty stupid. 8/1/2013 11:20:31 AM |

I will say that I don't regret the $159 I got my wife's "old" model for. The new one is certainly nicer and is a steal for performance vs price - absolutely no doubt about that. But I knew it was coming and figured it would be at least $60 more than what I was getting hers for. Ended up being $70. $70 certainly doesn't come close to denting our discretionary spending budget, but there is also no reason to spend $70 when we didn't need it.
I may get an S3 to replace my DX2 (with a slightly cracked screen) this fall. I could easily afford an S4 and it is better, but an S3 would still be an upgrade and get the job done. I just try and buy up to the level we'd really utilize vs what we can actually afford when it comes to electronics. If it was up to my tech side, I'd be keeping up with the latest and the greatest all the time on all my devices, but I just restrain myself because I don't NEED to have the best screen etc. There will always be something better soon anyway. This usually leads me to buying stuff near the end of it's cycle or just 1 rev behind the latest model. Always works for us and saves money. I won't pretend newer stuff isn't better or a good deal. Heck my DX2 is ancient these days. But it still gets the job done every day.

Yeah you people I don't get. I can't justify saving $100-200 by getting a last gen phone that I'll have for 2 years. I get frustrated because I can't upgrade my phone every year. I can't imagine having a device that's 3+ years old. 8/1/2013 12:16:14 PM |

^^^ I know you can't imagine it, but honestly it's not that bad. Everything still works. 1 factory reset during the time I've owned it and it is still snappy. I don't have the latest version of Android and it isn't as fast as newer phones but everything is functional. It's just not "as good" or "as fast." if the thing wasn't working and was freezing all the time, draining battery, sluggish, etc. it'd be one thing. When it starts to crap out on me like that, I'll replace it, but until then I'll hold onto it. The absolute only reason I'm entertaining the idea of replacing mine at this point is because I'm 'bored' with it. So, I still enjoy reading about the new phones because I am definitely a technology lover, but I don't need all the new features and just try and restrain myself from want vs need.
It's actually not about actively trying to SAVE $100-200, but rather no real reason to spend $100-$200 when I have something that still works for me. I don't think there is anything wrong when people get the latest and greatest (as long as they aren't like some people I know who really can't afford to get new phones as often as they do). I just have a threshold on that kind of stuff and I upgrade when I need it. I take the same approach with cars. Had mine 10 years and I have no plan of replacing it anytime soon.
Although, I will say it would be more than $100-$200. I got mine for $149 a little over 3 years ago and have had a plan of $45 for unlimited data that entire time. A subsidized phone would more than double my monthly bill and unsubsidized phones (especially current gen) are a lot more than $100-$200.
However, the real effect is this: we were talking about tablets. And then phones. And then my wife has a phone and a tablet. If you take the same latest & greatest approach on all devices, it really starts to add up to a lot more than $100-200.

Sarcasm? Or do you mean since last year? With the release of the Nexus series last year Android Tablets exploded.
Not to mention Android tablet's sold in 2013 beat Apple by a huge margin:
http://blog.laptopmag.com/android-vs-apple-tablet-sales
With the new Nexus 7 they tacked on the higher resolution display beating Apple to it and under cutting them by $100 compared to the iPad mini.
In terms of apps Android tablet apps have gotten way better over the last year both in terms of quantity and quality.8/1/2013 2:12:29 PM |

We still suffer from a lack of A+++ games, this is why having Tegra is so important if you want to game on Android to its fullest (see NV Shield). NVIDIA is shelling out the money to pay devs and develop their own Android gaming device. When we are still dealing with exclusive Apple games, having THD games on your tablet/phone with the other camp is very helpful and there are only going to be more and more of them with Shield just being launched.8/2/2013 4:21:39 PM |

Here are some perfect examples of why I wish the new Nexus 7 went with Tegra 4, however I know Tegra 4 would have broken the price range Nexus devices are known for or the new N7 would have been delayed.
Of course Tegra 4 being actively cooled in the Shield helps that 1.9ghz clock across all 4 cores and I guarantee it will OC nicely. Supposedly NVIDIA says the Shield ships with an unlocked bootloader, which is AWESOME. I just want to see how well this thing does in sales/following, I did give it STRONG consideration though; in the end I was glad I picked the N7. I just didn't want to have to carry around a 360 controller constantly to use a tablet. Now if I already had say the N7 last year when it launched and was interested in the Shield, it would have been a no brainer. 8/2/2013 4:58:09 PM |

With the new fused location provider in 4.3, the system will periodically observe local WiFi networks, even when you have WiFi off. They already had the data. They already have mapping... Sounds like LG will be producing the 3rd revision Nexus 7
Quote : | " The Tegra 4 part of the story is impressive. Performance on the device is incredibly smooth, I thought I had seen the smoothest possible experience with the latest and greatest quad core SoCs in smartphones, Tegra 4 in this form factor is something to behold. There are parts of some apps I never knew could go so fast. I said in the Nexus 7 review that I wished whatever happened to Tegra 4 that delayed it hadn't, so we could see it in more devices. Shield was a big part of what made me feel that way, especially after seeing and using it in the flesh.
Shield is an impressive product. It's solid, performant, and maybe Android gaming isn't really there yet, but what it does leave me wanting is for NVIDIA to make me a phone. " |
I think if NV had put a larger screen, say a 6" @ 1080p with a smaller bezel. I would purchase the Shield to use along with my "old" Nexus 7.
BTW, can anyone tell me how to get into the command prompt for Franco's Kernel?
