I wish they'd do something like my GNex...subsided Nexus device from the carrier
[Edited on September 12, 2013 at 2:04 PM. Reason : What do you all with Nexus 4s do for insurance? Anything? Warranty is just a year too right?] 9/12/2013 2:03:29 PM |

T-Mobile carried the nexus 4 in store at a subsidized price. It wasn't much of a subsidy, but it was. I think they sold for 199.
Based on leaks, the next nexus will not be a Verizon capable device. Womp. 9/12/2013 6:43:40 PM |

I really need a new phone, I feel like my bionic is on its last leg. I'm waiting to see what Republic Wireless will do. Im really liking the idea of spending $19/month, but I dont like the defy. 9/12/2013 7:53:01 PM |

^ that is, verbatim, my situation...same phone and waiting for RW to release their new phones
even though they promised by the "end of the summer", it seems there's a great deal of speculation that it will be october before we hear anything...i guess i'im fine waiting, but i really need to see what other options are out there, because i'm certainly not sticking with VZW 9/12/2013 10:26:25 PM |

the nexus 4 can be used on any GSM network (AT&T/TMO), right? so i pick one up now for $200, switch over to straight talk, then pick up the nexus 5 later on (not necessarily immediately at release), i should be able to sell the N4 to anyone with AT&T/TMO? 9/13/2013 1:43:48 PM |
puck_it All American 15446 Posts user info edit post |
Yes. But good luck selling it after the 5 is out... You'll basically lose $100 t9 use it for 2 months... 9/13/2013 2:30:34 PM |
quagmire02 All American 44225 Posts user info edit post |
maybe not quite that much
if google keeps up their pricing (and i think they will), the N5 prices will be $300 for 8GB and $350 for 16GB...if i only keep it for a couple of months, i think $200 is reasonable for a used 16GB, especially if it's someone tied to a contract with AT&T and they need a replacement
maybe not, though...i don't really keep track of phone resale value as the times i buy them, they're already so old that they're less than $100
is the general consensus that the N5 pricing scheme will be the same or are they expected to go up? 9/13/2013 2:42:40 PM |
puck_it All American 15446 Posts user info edit post |
Probably the same... But you mean to tell me, I can buy a used phone that was released a year ago for $200 from you.
Or I can buy a 5 brand new for $350... Or maybe even old stock nexus 4s unused for $200????
Tough call.
I really think you'll lose 50-100 in the proposition. I would just wait and buy the next nexus and call it a day. Or try to buy a used nexus 4 if you are that hard up. 9/13/2013 6:02:58 PM |

^^ i do that kind of thing all the time...also, i was referring to two different models between posts (but didn't clarify, my bad...since the 8GB was $200 but isn't available anymore)
i ended up picking up a new 16GB for $200, though...and yes, i believe i can sell it for close to that (i'm certainly not going to lose $100) IF i decide to upgrade to the 5, but right now i'm not sure what the 5 is going to do that will be worth spending $350 on...since i'm coming from a bionic, it doesn't take much for me to be impressed

On one hand I wanna ask how can you expect someone to pay $200 for a used item they can buy new for the same price. Sure you're not going to lose $100, but you sure as hell aren't going to get $200 for the thing either. Losing something around $50 is more likely...
On the other hand, I recently sold a 4+ year old Harmony One remote on eBay for $255, when you can get refurbs of a much newer model for $150ish, so there are dumb people out there, and eBay has a huge audience of them. I wouldn't have got anything close to that money on Raleigh CL, and I doubt you'll get anywhere close to $200 there either.]9/16/2013 8:52:41 PM |

and that's what it boils down to...they're in raleigh, too, and i'm not worried about it
and anyway, i wasn't really posting to "brag" that i could get my money back...i was just trying to decide what to do and i eventually settled on a 16GB N4 for $200 and the $45/month plan from ST...heck, i save $40/month just getting off VZW
and since this is an android thread...4.3 isn't mind-blowing, but i do like the refinements
slowly getting used to the pie control app that seems to be favorite amongst the devs (especially on phones where they've removed the menu softkey)9/16/2013 9:48:53 PM |

if i sell it before the end of the year, sure (like i said, i'm not sure i'll jump on the N5, i might just keep the N4 for a 6 months or a year or so, and of course it won't sell for $200 THEN)
in any case, would you believe me if i came back and said i sold it for $200? of course not, so why bother?
well, one day in and i can honestly say that i've noticed no difference...sure, VZW LTE is faster on paper, but i didn't notice faster page loads or app update download speeds
i'm sure there will be a couple of times that i'll be annoyed (my parents live in the boonies and last time i checked, they didn't have good - if any - GSM coverage)...but i suspect i'll appreciate the vast savings more than i'll hate the minor inconveniences9/17/2013 9:47:37 AM |

Someone just showed me something that perplexed me...
He got a new phone after his old one had a broken screen and couldn't respond on part of the touchscreen anymore, and the main difference is the new one had Android 4.2.2 and the old one had Android 4.1; however, when you tried to search from the Phone app on the old phone, you'd be kicked to the People app and could search in any part of your contacts, like name and company and notes...but on the new phone, you'd go to the Phone app's built-in search, which only allowed you to search names.
He thought I really knew my stuff when it came to phones or something, because he wanted me to get the new phone to act like the old one, and even after much Googling I'm not sure whether that can be done or whether you just need to use the People app directly from 4.2 onward. 9/17/2013 7:46:09 PM |
puck_it All American 15446 Posts user info edit post |
It may be in relation to an apple patent. If I remember correctly, something about searching across apps on a device for contacts was protected by a patent... Or something vaguely similar. 9/17/2013 11:54:43 PM |

I tried this feature in store and it worked every time for me.

Agreed. Why abandon Android's wonderful multi-tasking functionality and implement your own multi-tasking? Especially when the thing you develop is a pile of dog shit. And yeah, as a whole, LG's software does suck. You're only buying this phone if you want to ROM it.
Quote : | "Yes, you could buy it and root it. But if you're going to buy a phone just for the hardware, just get an HTC One." |
But LG G2 has better hardware than the HTC One...What it lacks in the design department, it makes up with it's processor/video/screen/battery.
Also the buttons on the Verizon model are small, metallic, and hard to use. Perhaps I'd get used to them after a while, but they didn't work that well for me when I was playing with it in store. The wireless charging would be cool, but I'm not sure it would be worth having to use those buttons.]9/24/2013 9:53:06 AM |

i was actually serious...the economics of republic are almost too much to resist. I don't think 4g has been worth it for the last two years at $170/2 lines on Verizon with Droid Razrs
almost any phone anyone offers at this point, even their lowest, is newer and better than my phone and if the only difference between the moto x and the dvx is the absence of 4g, I think I would have to go with a $25/month plan and that phone no matter how great the Nexus 5 might be 9/24/2013 7:44:24 PM |

I have a Galaxy S2 on Sprint, and battery life is pretty terrible, which I think is largely due to the phone not getting a good signal and constantly scanning. Its a Wimax phone, so Im curious if the LTE phones on Sprint are much better with this, considering Sprint has done a lot of upgrades in this area recently (or so Ive heard). Or am I better off just peacing out from Sprint? (even with having data limits) 9/27/2013 3:15:46 PM |

^the s2 batteries are being replaced for free at service centers.
Also, I have a Sprint HTC One, and even with about half my usage being on lte, I am easily getting 15-18 hours of usage. Lte is definitely more efficient, and the newer phones have bigger batteries. 9/27/2013 8:12:35 PM |

Depends on who makes your phone. Some devices, like Samsung, have a short in their chargers across the data pair of the USB port. This is sensed by the phone and it will draw full current. For example, I have a dual port charger that has 1A and 2A, but will charge at 350 mA if I don't use a cable I shorted myself. 10/1/2013 7:06:14 PM |

So I got in on the Verizon unlimited upgrade glitch... I ordered a moto x. I fucking love the onscreen notifications. I also love trusted Bluetooth pairs. For instance when paired with my vehicle, and the vehicle is on... once I unlock my device, it will remain unlocked. I can turn this off in my notification pane, or it automatically locks when I turn the car off... This needs to be put into stock android.

i love having the extra real estate on the screen and i've finally gotten the touch point set perfectly so that it doesn't interfere with anything else i'm doing
