One thing that I do love about Lowe is that we finally have a lock down shooting threat like Wood. Herb never was able to give us that. Sure engin, evtimov and scooter all had their nights, but they also all had long droughts too.

Seeing wood turn into a consistent 3 pt threat is a sign of improvement IMO.

i just did some quick research and it seems that Wood has only made 39 two-point FGs in his collegiate career. god damn.

that's ~0.88 per game

Don't want Tubby at all.

Turgeon won't leave the midwest, IMO. His next move will likely be to Kansas if they come calling. Turgeon would likely be my realistic #1 (Over Sean Miller), but it ain't happening.

Dave Rose is a good call. That would be interesting. He probably hates NC State for the 83 championship

There don't seem to be any sexy up-and comers this season. Brad Stevens ain't coming to State, Few isn't coming to State. I think you have to ask Barnes again and Miller...then interview some up-and-comers and see who impresses you

everybody knocks calipari, but he obviously gets it done.

would you rather have a winning coach who cheats, or a losing coach who does it the "right way"?

Im not sure that sid fits either of those descriptions.

There are plenty of teams that have great freshmen classes and produce.

College bb is a fucking joke, but ncs sucks balls and hasnt won a game this year against a mediocre team. Fuck it, glad I pulled my support from this disaster.

If you are going to suck, at least be like wake and have some integrity - our guys are dumb as shit and still suck.

Lets just hire co-coaches of Pearl and Drew. We'll clean up on the recruiting trail, win a ton of games, and it'll be freakin awesome until we get caught by the NCAA.

Quote :
"would you rather have a winning coach who cheats, or a losing coach who does it the "right way"?"

Neither. You can win and stay predominantly within the rules (Bend them, but don't do probation-worthy violations). Winning isn't worth NCAA probation and getting another death penalty.

You can hire pearl but put oversight and procedures in place to keep his ass out of trouble. Also, build clauses into his contract to deal with any violations.

No need to be sanctimonious faggots who think there is such a thing as a great coach who is Opie clean. People who think that employee problems are "take it or leave it" are simply poor managers. The AD who can not only hire pearl when he is down but also work with him to fix his problems will be credited for being a great AD as the team reaches the final 4.

Pearl wouldn't be allowed within 100 miles of Raleigh. I'm sure the Sloan family still has some pull with NC State athletics.

Didn't he cheat on Norm's neice and leave her for some coed?

college bb is such a farce. the best 10 players every year are already in the nba and the best of the rest are one and done.

unless you are duke, you have to get thugs/foreigners/morons to succeed - fuck unc and it's self-righteous attitude. Duke is not uncs rival - duke should be no one's rival - they win and most of the guys are legit as far as academics go. Duke's NBA cred is pretty lame though.

It's the same deal with all the sanctimonious faggots who didn't want Vick to play for their team. The Eagles are looking like fucking geniuses, now, after working with him to get over his problems and turn him into a great football player.

people that post this are totally clueless... its not like he sent a check for $100,000 to recruits, he didnt change grades, he didnt buy their moms a house, he had them over for a fucking cookout. The infraction itself is nothing, no more than what happens all over the place and a lot less than a lot of infractions (see Calipari). The problem was lying about it, thats why hes in trouble, not the infraction itself

^^ I don't know for sure, but I'd think it would be alot.

Sloan left because he hated Willis Casey and Casey refused to play him because he hated Sloan. Sloan was still rumored to be a big donor to State, and I know that just about everyone in his family went to State and still are involed in NC State athletics.

Originally, I thought Pearl was a shoe-in for our job becuase he was married to Sloan's neice and he was at UMW. We played them in the NIT early in Herb's tenure, and in an interview he talked about his mixed emotions becuase his in-laws would disown him if he beat NC State and how his entire family were big wolfpack fans, etc.

I know this means jack shit, but I would think it would create quite a stir if we ever approached Pearl

Either way, no way anyone would hire Pearl at this point with an NCAA investigation going on

i'm going to estimate that about 30 of them were fast break lay up/dunks (yes, contrary to what some people seemed surprised by earlier this year...he can dunk when given a wide open basket and a run up) and 8 were 3 point attempts where he either stepped on the line or just happened to be slightly inside it

that leaves 1 legitimate two point basket, which I think was on a princeton-style cut to the basket in the game he torched FSU

I never said it was, in fact I said he would turn it down. That said, however, he has to be given a call to keep the fan base happy and on the 1 in a million chance he accepts it.

And I stand by my statement that had Lee Fowler offered him the job back when we hired Sidney he would be our Coach, since NC State is a step up from Xavier. Too bad Fowler was a complete fuck up.

You have no idea about the history of NC State basketball, obviously.

Norm Sloan left NC State because we had the lowest paid coaching staff in the conference. The AD refused to give him or his assistants raises, so they went to UF. That same AD ran off Lou Holtz. You don't leave your dream job at your alma mater (where you've already won a national championship) over just a few dollars, and it was ridiculous that his staff was the lowest paid in the conference.

All of that is true, but he still left the school. Which would in turn decrease his pull on the athletic department. None of what you just posted makes any difference whether his family has say in our athletics.

Agreed. Based on what I know of the situation, you can't question his love for this university. He played here under Case, had success here as a coach, and was simply unappreciated by the administration and never wanted to leave.

He actually said it was something he always regretted later on in life.

Nobody gives a shit about history of nc state basketball.

If they did, we'd be a notre dame program that would get some sort of national attention.

the fact is, we suck, have for years, and everyone thinks unc and duke are god's gift to the bball world.

unless the ncaa brings down the evil empire, we will continue to be the Texas Tech of NC.

yea you guys are going to have to accept that the only way we're going to get good is to take a guy who's been disgraced (ie pearl, see leach to maryland in fball) or hit on the mid-major lottery. sean miller will laugh in our faces if we call him and as much as I want to believe in the mike anderson/brad stevens pipe dreams they're never happening either

problem is the mid major lottery tickets look like shit this year. the only guy who really makes sense with ties near our area is gregg marshall and honestly he just feels like the type of guy that gets us back to the NCAA tournament 2nd round a bunch of times while not necessarily making up for it with an exciting fast pace style or NBA talent. plus the fact that he has two g's at the end of his first name just pisses me off

Don't know a ton about him, but what about Pastner over at Memphis? Is that even in the feasible range? I feel like there is something to offer a younger coach coming to the triangle, to the most lacking program, and getting them to realize the name that they could make for themselves revitalizing the program to compete with Duke/UNC. I feel like leaching off of UNC and Duke's success are the only ways to convince someone of a higher caliber to come here. Of course, we'd have to throw some major $$$ behind the offer to make it realistic.

I still don't know how good of a recruiter Yow will be able to be for State, though.

I've always liked Sidney and supported the hell out of him until this year, but even if Tracy comes back and helps the team go on a run in ACC play and make the NCAA's, how confident can we be in Sidney as a coach? I know your best player is out, but we haven't seen any adjustments made game to game, and we still have the same issues we've had the past 4 seasons.

I want us to go after a mid-major type coach with great success who is looking for a shot to move up to a power conference. Those saying NCSU has nothing to offer are fooling themselves. We used to a basketball power and have sucked for the better part of the last 20 years - I get that, but we are on Tobacco Road, with 2 current basketball super powers within a 30 minute car ride, in an area with a ton of talent, a great basketball facility, with a passionate fanbase and a team that currently has a lot of young talent.

If we got one coach interested who was smart, has experience at the college level and determined to make a name for himself I don't see why NCSU wouldn't be a major draw. All he has to do is have one season of success and the fanbase will immediately love him. This is Yow's opportunity to be the best AD we've had in a long-ass time, she needs to make an exciting hire.

EDIT: Also I hate that Sidney was put in this position. In my opinion he never should've been offered the job. Fowler whiffed on big name coaches, went after a couple of other guys and then went for a popular alum. He never looked at the mid-major coaches and we suffered because of it. I still maintain the thought that Sidney would've been a hell of an assistant coach.

I think the guy at UCF is the new coach I'm going to delude myself into thinking we're getting and will be awesome with. This is replacing the Mike Anderson pipe dream with a slightly more realistic one (from 0% to like .05%)

not to ignore the rest of your post...cause i agree if Sid isnt the fit, an up and coming mid major guy would probably be the best answer

but if Tracy comes back and we go on a run and make the tourney, I will be confident in Sidney as a head coach...while you can say "what about next year when Smith is gone", I think thats a bigger question with football ("what about next year when RW is gone") because our freshmen have shown a lot of promise...they havent all been able to put it together consistently for 40 minutes, but again, they're all 18 year old kids with 10 games of NCAA bball experience, and only about 4-5 of those are against quality opponents

I'm optimistic...I'm also old and so I'm not expecting Final Fours because I'm a State fan

It may be, but it's not a question about the coach, IMO. We've already seen what O'brien can do as a head coach at another ACC school.

One of my biggest gripes about the Sidney hire was that he had no previous success at a head coaching position at ANY level. No high school, college, pro success as a head coach. He has success as a pro ASSISTANT...which tells me absolutely nothing.

So I was resigned to hoping he could learn on the job at State and hopefully the learning curve wouldn't be too much. I haven't seen much so far that would leave me to believe he's good enough to succeed at this level, but my mind is open to change if he can do something with this team this year.

You guys are absolutely unbelievable.

You are the ones who should be fired because you don't know dick about basketball.

Just because some moron ran around yelling how overrated kansas and arizona are all day you actually thought we were better than them.

Look I told you a long time ago that we'd be borderline tournament team next year. Guess what? When tracy went down THIS season became next year except the freshmen aren't sophs yet and the sophs aren't juniors yet.

I don't know why you clowns think we can just roll over 3 top 10 teams and a top 20 team with this roster... We aren't that talented and we are nearly the youngest team in the entire nation and yet you look at close losses to the nations best teams as a bad thing?!

You guys bitch about subs but you are the same monkeys clamoring for harrow to get more PT when its apparent he isn't ready to contribute.

This isn't a science experiment we didn't need a control group, we knew that if you replaced an all american PF with a barely serviceable backup that we'd be much worse.

Oh wait, no I knew that. You guys apparently didn't.

Just shut the fuck up we are tired of listening to you fucking school girls. Just don't even watch the season.

We're acc title contenders in two years if you faggots don't blow this whole thing up

our rebounding is starting to look a lot better, we just need to pick up the intensity on defense and keep attacking. once ryan begins to understand what he needs to do on defense, he'll be starting.

Rebounding? We seem to have taken care of that issue pretty well over the start of the season. Our major issue is an inability to score inside which has NEVER been a problem the entire time Lowe has been here. Guard play? Has been fairly acceptable. So to say the same issues are present after 4 years is bullshit.

We could have easily won this game if Leslie/ Painter could have hit point blank shots. Leslie hits HALF of his shots and the Arizona game would have very likely been a win. You can't have someone miss 13 shots mainly on putbacks and expect to win a game. Arizona over rated? Yeah we hung with them without OUR BEST FUCKING PLAYER.

If we keep shooting 35% it's going be a long year. we work way too hard to get a basket, and not hard enough on D. need to put more pressure on the ball and off the Bball players. easy passes. easy shots easy second chance points.

We make everything harder for ourselves and everything easier for our opponents.
i still have a hard time trying to figure out what kind of offense we run. The dribble pass, pass back dribble for 25 seconds O is not working so far.

Big men missing point blank shots and put backs will kill your shooting percentage.

^Again when you don't have an inside game you either create off the dribble or pass until you get a decent shot.
Seriously how many shots were forced up at the buzzer this game? 1 or 2? Quit making shit up.

Perhaps we should recruit some skilled big men? Or tough ones? What we seem to have is unskilled and soft big men. A recipe for being awful finishing around the basket.

Also, according to Lowe, Tracy is and was cleared to play. It is all about pain tolerance and toughness now with him..

^ Yeah I heard some postgame comments from the youngstown state game and it is all about feeling comfortable on it. It sounds like he will have pain in it though.
Painter should be tougher but I will give Leslie a pass he is still pretty thin and hasn't gotten used to the college game. Smith has certainly shown himself capable of playing with contact.
