I lost about $75 last night on one hand. Pocket K's to pocket A's. Ouch.... I still made about $120 though, but had I won that hand, I woulda been up close to $300. 6/18/2004 9:02:06 AM |

rangerjoe looks like he is trying to lose money... first calling .50 cents with a 3/8 suited (i guess he could have been feeling lucky and 50 cents isn't too much, this isn't as bad as the rest of his moves)... then calling the extra 1.50 someone threw in before the flop. and then putting in 25 bucks on a flush draw with only 8 high. doesn't seem like he is a very solid player

You will find quite a few people who are not "very solid players" online. That's how it can be really lucrative. But at the same time, it can be very frustrating too, when their crappy play pays off for them and they end up beating you in a hand they should not have. 6/19/2004 4:04:12 PM |

I played at a casino outside of Phoenix about 3 weeks ago and most of these stories would have made you very happy there. I will explain.
The casino keeps a running jackpot. Anyone who loses with a hand better than Aces full of tens recieves half of the jackpot. 25% goes to the true winner of the hand, and the rest is split between the remaining players, even if they didnt see the flop. When I was there my buddy won with 4 nines, however, had another king showed up to give his opponent 4 kings, he would have 4500. Basically the jackpot was 9000 when we left, as it keeps building every day. How sweet would it be to win that thing instead of feeling like you got burned with a good hand? 6/19/2004 4:31:45 PM |

Not that I want to make this thread a "teach me poker" thread, but calling $25 with 3/5 suited is not a horrible play in a few scenarios, such as....
1. You were playing $5/$10 blinds (so it is effectively raising 2.5x the big blind, and you are playing suited almost-connectors).
2. There were multiple callers before you and you are last to act. If 5 people call beforehand, the pot odds are huge. It's pretty obvious you don't have the best hand to start, (as a matter of fact, you have the worst hand most likely) but the implications are huge. If A24 flops, nobody will put you on playing 3/5. Someone playing AK or pocket 4's will undoubtedly call a lot of $$ thinking they have the best hand. And if you don't hit, 3/5 is a pretty easy hand to part with after the flop.
3. If you are Jon Turner, you always call with 3/5 suited, regardless of the circumstances. 7/20/2004 2:17:23 PM |

ok here. over the last hour and a hlaf on real money tables.
my bad beats:
1.) flop the nut flush, in PL omaha 8/b (ace high). guy calls my pot bets to all in, and hits runner runner straight flush (only like $25 loss)
2.) holding QJxx on big blind in PL ohama 8/b. flop comes JJ2. raises ensue, etc, to all in. show down shows a guy with QQxx against my three jacks. 4th is a rag, then 5th hits a Q. hit one of his two outs.
3.) tournament NL Hold'em. holding J9s on button, flop comes JJ9. checks around, i bet the pot. 1 caller. next card a 2 or something. checks around, bet the pot again. he calls again. 5th brings an Ace, and it checks back to me, thinking my full house is good, i bet the pot agian. he raises all in. sure enough, he called over 60% of his stack into my full house with pocket aces. he hit one of his two outs.
4.) tournament NL hold'em. holding 88 on big blind, im short stack in 10 top sit and go down to 5 people left. aggresive raiser had raised on the button every time around, this time i was going to call being short stacked and all. small blind calls with KJo, (he was second short stack). i go all in for ~400 on top of the buttons raise. button and small blind call. button holds 99. flop come 6K8, i hit my set. 4th rus 2, 5th his the buttons 9.
=(
all in the past hour and half..

I wanna clarify the definition of a "bad beat". I think of a bad beat as any beat in which, when the cards are turned over, you are a fairly big favorite, and then you lose the hand. For instance, the other night, I had pocket 10's in a cash game. I just called and the flop came 247 offsuit. I raised to $7, somone else doubled it to $14. At this moment I had to decide whether that guy had hit 2 pair, a set, or was playing top pair with a good kicker. I put him on A7 (just knowing how he plays) so I put him all-in for an additional $20 or so. He calls, and what do you know, he has A7.... At this point I am an 80% favorite, but of course an ace comes on the turn, giving him the win.
So I guess what I am saying is, the strength of the hand preflop really has no bearing on whether a "bad beat" was taken or not (unless the all-in was a pre-flop all-in.) So, in the case of the guy who had QQxx in Omaha, and the flop comes JJx, him calling/winning the hand would definitely be onsidered a bad beat, because he would have to know someone had the jack. 7/27/2004 12:25:43 PM |
