It is pretty much all profit if they use the same engine in doing GTA 3 expansion games. GTA 4 will be a whole new engine and gameplay.

I actually DO own GTA3 and Vice City, however the differences between those two (while certainly not gameplay) were enough to get me to buy it.

But when I got it I was hoping they weren't just going to keep plugging the same thing into different cities.

I like the style of gameplay in III and ViceCity, so I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

as for half life 2 and all that, first person shooters get old really fast to me. besides, i'm on a computer 8 hours a day at work, when i get home, i'd rather chill out on the couch in front of my big tv than sit at my desk in front of the computer. but to each his own, its no skin off my back.

They usually create different series of games to go to something completely new and different, such as manhunt or the failure that was state of emergency. If the series has been proven and entertaining, and you can't really say GTAIII or Vice City wern't entertaining, what else do you want from it? I know I got my $50 worth out of both of them. I could have spent my money on a lot of better things, but I could also have spent it on a lot of worse things. I agree that there are bugs and other issues to be fixed in the series, but hopefully the San Andreas will address these issues. I never saw the bugs in III and VC as being large enough for me to not buy the game.
