4/14/2005 10:01:27 PM

i DJed last summer on Wednesday mornings and played alot of 80's new wave, punk, and post-punk (ala pixies, joy division, replacements) along with johnny cash and the occasional le tigre or ska song (hey, if i did it all for me, it would have been all ska). I got in trouble my first time out b/c i ignored the "rotation" lists, which were crap like polyphonic spree, moses leroy, cure remixes and other junk. the rotation policy is garbage and is what is responsible for the redundancy of the radio. in a meeting, jared made it pretty clear to us that the purpose was to compete with 96 rock. I thought the goal was to provide something totally different, not the same thing we can go elsewhere for?
4/14/2005 11:23:08 PM
Considering the fact that most of the DJ's sound kinda lame anyway...
4/15/2005 8:54:57 AM
^^ you could have gotten a weekend spot, but honestly I dont really agree with the mandatory songs we have to play but its mostly to give the station flow and to prevent newer DJ's from playing Metallica and Slipknot all day. I dont really wanna sound like an elitist douchebag but some new DJ's play some ridiculous stuff. This is a college radio station and should be playing music by bands outside of the mainstream (although we play that stupid Killers song). But Luigi, it seems like they should have left you alone, or you should have just bite your toung and played the programmed songs you liked and just dealt with a few you didnt like.
4/15/2005 9:55:46 AM
Man, the only way i could handle DJing there is if i was a Chainsaw DJ.
4/15/2005 10:38:19 AM
luigiyour issues are Program Director issues, and we have a new Program Director, so yo might want to give it another shot.

wxdu (duke) and wxyc (unc) come close, but xyc just goes too far off the deep end far too much ( i heard frog mating calls for like 10 minutes straight one day)http://kexp.org is pretty neat...they have status like wcpe in raleigh does, but they are similar to wknc in taste...but they try to structure their playlists moreunfortunatley they're on the other side of the country
4/15/2005 11:26:27 PM
http://www.wsum.org/main.htmlUW-Madison has a great station
4/15/2005 11:37:28 PM
replace all the ghey talk shows and basically everything on sunday with more after hours, underground, and shut the punk up. plz to add a bluegrass and/or non nashville country show too. oh, and quit talking about john tesh too... that's getting real old.
4/15/2005 11:50:33 PM
the talk shows are a fragment of the whole schedule...and i think there's plenty afterhoursthere used to be a bluegrass show...i think it was on saturdaysunderground used to be on more, but dj's had issues showing up[Edited on April 16, 2005 at 12:06 AM. Reason : .]

there was talk of a station re-format before i left, and that's coming up on a year nowimho i think thetalk shows should be moved to morning talk shows, for the morning driveput a weekday drive home on from 4-6, and perhaps 2 nights a week from 6-8 have a local issues slot, or perhaps just issues... i'm not talking terry shiavo (dont shoot me for not spelling the name right, that DIDNT get coverage in the UK as mujch) issues, i'm taking campus issues and things that NCSU students care about or are/will be affected by.i think afterhours is cool from 8-12pm, but i do think that on friday and saturday night KNC should look into doing live remote brodcasting, or having more of a weekend type feel.... as for the metal - perhaps have the issues slot be an hour, and metal be an hour or two every night, push afterhours back to start at 9pm until midnight, instead of 8... dj's get hour and a half slots instead of 2 hours, and metal is played more than 2 nights a weekas far as the music goes, perhaps link up with some pan-european stations, or do a joing promotion with other college stations, WKNC has a wide reach plus online broadcasting, why not use all of that? and SOMETHING needs to be done about the promotions department, thursdays in the brickyard once a month just isn't cutting it. local mags will cover WKNC, local clubs will get involved, local promoters will also, please get someone that knows how to do promotions behind this effort, and involve the NCSU propulation... if you're going to throw a party do it in conjunction with other places, perhaps have a remote broadcast from east village, or have decks set up on campus during hillsboro hike? throw parties with underground Dj's spinning between sets, or find some local hip hop bands (if there are any) and do a hip hop night. if you're going to do afterhours things use the local promoters and start with joint nights, get involved in weeklys and monthlies around the raleigh areaif people apply, have the proper HR people in there to get back to them about training, and actually do it. [/opinions]

http://www.kexp.org/ is the former college station of the University of Washington. I say former because they grew so popular that they basically became their own entity. As such, the UW doesn't have a broadcast station any more, but we do have http://www.rainydawg.org/, which is a web-only station run by students. The greatest single feature of RainyDawg is that their website lists the last 10 songs played. I wish WKNC had something similar (they've been working on it for how long?).Favorite show on WKNC was 'The Morning After' but now Jamie is on at 8am, which is a little early for my tastes.

the word from our webmaster is that there will be comprehensive, all-inclusive, searchable logs at wknc.org sometime next week. there will also be song titles in winamp and on RDS
4/19/2005 3:01:39 PM

4/19/2005 3:36:05 PM
i definately used the logs man. that annoys me too. i might try to grab a slot for this summer. i have all the training, and id love to do it again (as long as i can find a time i dont have to follow "rotation").
4/20/2005 3:39:14 PM
