LB outsold the new Institute album and the new Dandy Warhols ... debuted at 56, not bad 9/23/2005 1:59:38 AM |

Aight...
Show was amazing.
I've been sleeping on Kev Brown lyrically (production wise, I've known he's tight). Legacy and the Away Team have improved their live performances dramatically since I saw them last. Little Brother just ripped it...took it to a whole 'nother level.
Percy Miracles is that dude... His guest appearance alone was worth the price of admission.
Enjoyed myself so much, might come home for the Cat's Cradle show. 9/26/2005 10:32:03 AM |

for some reason i'm still feelin' the chitlin circuit mixtape vol 1.5 more than the minstrel show. but i agree - phonte as percy was hilarious in person. one other thing though, i still can't figure out why they named it "the minstrel show," without really justifying the reason... thats kinda a weighted phrase to be throwing around loosely.

Andrew, here's what 9th told Chris and I when we asked him about the album. This is straight from our article, "The man behind the beats."
Quote : | " “When we go overseas, they all think we’re pimps and thugs, because the media only portrays one side,” 9th said. “We all play a part in it, but we need more reality in our rap. People think they have to play themselves to make it. We don’t have to do that anymore.”
“Right now everybody in rap is putting on a face to be something they’re not,” 9th said. “I mean, 50 Cent is who he is. Lil Jon is who he is. We are who we are. Kanye is who he is. Common is who he is. We’re all individuals. But you have kids who watch this shit and think they have to be a 50; they think they have to talk about shooting a lot of people to make it. That’s the minstrel show of it. When we were kids, our heroes were athletes. Today, kids -- especially black kids -- their heroes are rappers. That’s what the minstrel show is about -- people who wear masks but don’t need them.”
To 9th, the industry’s ills have turned hip-hop into a popularity contest. “It’s like the WWF. Who has the best intro music, the biggest muscles, the most fans, the biggest finishing move,” 9th said. “It’s not about the skill at all.” " |

Historically, minstrel shows were put on by racist white men putting on black makeup and essentially making fun of black culture in some ways. Naming a rap album "The Minstrel Show" is obvious irony in that context. The whole album is laced with ironies. Read the liner notes on the album cover. It explains the title better.
