Got to agree with Incognegro on this, the raptor is worth the LITTLE bit of extra money. You have basically maxxed out everything else. Why not drop 60 bucks on a 15-20% increase in disk access?
Seriously, you say it wasn't worth the money, then why the hell did you spring for a 7800 over a 6800, or a x2 over a high end a64.
As for the "pretty lights", just keep in mind the extra 5-7 dollars a MONTH those lights and fans are going to cost you in electricity. You are paying an extra 50-80 bucks per YEAR for something no one else will see or appreciate.
Not to mention taxing the power supply that bit more. 9/26/2005 7:57:53 PM |

It's now sitting in a 30x30 garage bay being prepped to mount the rear subframe and I'm measuring the engine bay to tube it in. And the only money I've dumped was keeping it in storage for the last 10 months. Other than that I have basically broken even.9/26/2005 11:34:16 PM |

sorry I'm making such a big deal about your hard drive, anyway It just so happens that I to beat it to mass storage and seeing such a fine system with a single mediocre disk makes me cry emo tears 9/27/2005 7:22:57 AM |

lol its ok its tww responses like that are expected keep in mind that there is nothing holding me from buying a raptor 2 and setting up some kind of dual HD setup later down the road and just installing all my games on the raptor if you slave a hard drive that has windows installed on it would it still run windows from it? 9/27/2005 10:14:12 AM |

when you have a dual core processor it means it can process twice the amount of data at one given time meaning the faster your hdd can dish out the data, the faster it will be processed, take this into the account that single core processors can still bottleneck at 7200rpm hdd seek time, means that one 160gb 7200rpm drive will be painfully slow compared to what a two drive 10000rpm raptor would do. two drives won't give you a performance increase over a single core processor, but it will when running in RAID and using a dual core processor.
i say return the hdd and get a raptor or two

I just built that computer a couple weeks ago. Its bad ass and i get no choppyness with BF2 when i run it at 1600x1200 with MAX settings and MAX anti-aliasing. I love the new case too.
oh and photoshop and the likes open up in a matter of 2 or 3 seconds, along with any PSD file i'm working on. Great for productivity. I think the RAID 0 raptor drive i used goes a long way with the dual core.

It means it can run multiple tasks at one time with a performance hit and effeciently use multithreaded allplications.9/28/2005 8:41:33 AM |

^^^ ya man, its phat. the motherboard is one of the best motherboards i've worked with. It came with a "Guru front mount lcd screen" that gives you all the temp stats, proc. speed, memory stats. etc...and has a simple button to reset CMOS so you no longer have to open the case to do it. Also comes with a neat vent with a 80mm fan in it to circulate cool air on the vid card. 9/28/2005 10:29:19 AM |

I'll agree that you'll get a performance increase moving from a 7200rpm to 10000rpm, but dual raptors are not worth it. Hard drives are still the bottleneck for most systems, yes. But I don't think it was worth it for him to get a faster hard drive. I rather him save a few bucks and get a bigger flat panel so that he gets real benefit out of his graphics card.9/28/2005 12:31:29 PM |

well i already use a 24" widescreen LCD so i'd say the money i spent on a second raptor has been far worth it. 9/28/2005 12:40:38 PM |

I've got a 10k raptor in my dell and I can say without a doubt that I'm always one of the first to load.
Makes it nice because I don't have to wait for some noob to die in the jet before I get to keep it the whole round 9/28/2005 2:40:07 PM |

that anandtech test was done on a single core processor, and i would never suggest RAID-0
not to mention you can through out all the SYSMARK overall (3d/2d content creation and Office) benchmarks since they have nothing to do with hard drive speed and a person with dual raptors i guarantee you isn't concerned with anything else than gaming and the general speed of read/write access to the hard drive for faster load times.
i'd like to see a new test with dual-core, i would be willing to bet the difference between a single raptor and a dual raptor setup would be more apparant.
back to the original sentiment was that one 10,000rpm would be faster than one 7200rpm drive, whether he buys two is up to his wallet.
Golovko nice rig
