which means what exactly?
national and international events affect students, why shouldn't they be informed about them, or at least comment on them.
but it's just easier to come back with a one-liner than an intelligent thought.

actually, the comment was quite straightforward. it meant that the Technician is still stuck arguing about shit using the "logic" and rationale of ten or fifteen years ago. newsflash: it didn't solve the dispute then, and it sure as hell aint gonna solve it now! Add to that the degredation of actual quality, and you have something which is uniquely incapable of "evolving" along with national events and issues. That, and the Technician doesn't even inform students about anything of substance anymore.
Case in point: There was a full page article regarding "safety" at Carter-Finley this week. The article started out by mentioning that there was a bomb which detonated at the OKLAHOMA UNIVERSITY football stadium. Two problems with this: 1) its oklaFUCKINGhoma. not NCSU, not UNC, not Duke, not Wake, not VT, not clemson... OKLAfuckingHOMA. the relevance is nowhere to be found. 2) Not only did the article mention something which was ultimately irrelevent to the topic of discussion about Carter-Finley stadium, but it did so without even discussing the actual bombing! It just said "a bomb exploded at oklahoma's stadium. Here's what NCSU has done and is doing." and then proceeded to tell us shit that we have been told ad nauseum. So, it started out with one purpose, then abruptly switched to another, and in the process did neither justice.
Thus, not only did it not discuss the issue of stadium security, not only did it fail to add anything new and meaningful to a topic which has been beaten worse than rodney king or reginald denny, it ALSO failed to inform us about a VERY REAL event. Its was like one gigantic tease! "Boming at oklahoma, now listen to the same old shit..." The technician of a few years ago at least actually printed news. I mean, there were some stupid sections in it as well, but there were actual news articles, garnered both from the wire, but also by good ol' fashioned journalistic pavement-pounding. The only thing it that is now "good" are the police blotter (entertainment), horoscopes and the other type shit that appears in that space (entertainment), Johnsie Lang and Daniel Underwood (entertainment), searching for bad grammar (entertainment), and the occaisional well written letter to the editor (a quest for actual intellectual substance, but more often than not pure entertainment). There's absolutely nothing newsworthy, and nothing informative. At least if I go home and read the Rhinocerous times I actually learn something about current events and get a perspective of past events... When I pick up the technician, I know I'm going to get a stupid article by Johnsie Lang (really, she's just plain retarded. I mean, i'd fuck her brains out, but probably only out of spite), some mindless drivel by someone else, incoherent ramblng from the editors, news of another Volleyball ACC Loss, and bitching about the Pirate Captain.
please, tell me how any of that will "inform me" or allow me to actually hear someone else's opinion? Halfway through the first fucking sentence I'm often like "heard that before. its illogical and inherently irrelevent"10/5/2005 8:56:31 PM |

btw: another reason for a paper related to the university with no official ties to the university is so that students can be more critical of university events and policies without having to answer to the university. thus, professors, faculty, bigwigs, students, whatever; theyre all fair game. 10/5/2005 9:56:09 PM |

Most students are not particularly effected, and even when they are, they don't give a shit anyway. You could tell them that they should give a shit, but to use another critic's words, that would be "obvious and paternalistic advice." 10/6/2005 10:05:58 PM |

You're saying that the columns in the technician are as good or better than the professional writing in the N&O. You write for the technician, thus, you're saying your writing is as good as or better than that of a professional. Apparantly this is not what you meant, which leads me to believe that at least one technician writer has difficulty expressing his thoughts with words.
Quote : | "You, however, devoted your free time to attacking Underwood and others " |
yes, I devoted the entire 2 min of my free time that it took to write that post. And I was pointing out Underwood's flaws in order to criticize the technician as a whole. I have no interest in whether or not my post made him sad and I was not trying to attack him. I'm fairly certain I didn't damage his psyche too badly however.

this is funny to me for two reasons: 1. My profile has my age when I created this account, not my current age. So your age superiority is only imagined. 2. I have never said that I intend to save the world or anything along those lines. I said that the technician prints poorly written articles a lot of the time (that doesn't mean that everything in the technician is poorly written btw). This too appears to be your overactive imagination.10/6/2005 10:55:33 PM |

"Age superiority" is irrelevant. "Naivete inferiority" would be a more apt description, whether you're 18 or 22 (I'm guessing it comes with being a flaming liberal?)...

you seem to be easily confused. I never said what my opinion was as to how long this new publication will last. I was pointing out how pompous you sounded, not arguing the point you were making. I actually agree with the statement that, depending on how they set it up, the paper probably won't last more than a few years. This is especially true if the continuation of the paper is solely dependent on students.
But saying "There's nothing more entertaining than watching some naive kids working feverishly to save the world, only to get smacked across the face by that cruel bitch Reality..." makes you sound like a jackass. I'm sure none of them think they're going to "save the world." In reality, instead of just bitching about something they're willing to put in the time and effort to change it, which I can respect. All I'm seeing from you is a bunch of bitching about how naive "teh l3ft" is.10/7/2005 9:11:02 AM |

See here we come back to that whole "English comprehension" thing you apparently missed in grade school.
On the one hand, working feverisly to save the world by creating splat! is "willing to put in the time and effort" that you respect; on the other, being "willing to put in the time and effort" in a competing endeavor doesn't merit similar respect. While on the third hand you a sentence later you decide all you see is really "a bunch of bitching"...when on the fourth, "a bunch of bitching" pretty much sums up your entire time in this thread

compare the amount of posts we both have and our post frequencies. That should speak for itself. I really think it's funny (and moronic) when someone who uses tww more often than I do makes fun of me for using it. But to answer your question, I usually do browse internet news sites before going to bed and in the morning while drinking my coffee. The soap box will sometimes have interesting stuff that I might have missed or local stuff, and so sometimes I'll check it.
Quote : | "You had no point. Not entirely different from the rest of your posts" |
just because you fail to see the point doesn't mean it's non-existent. Then again, I would expect as much from someone who thinks the technician is on par with professional journalism.
Quote : | "on the other, being "willing to put in the time and effort" in a competing endeavor doesn't merit similar respect." |
I never said that. Again, this is your over-active imagination at work. Did you see me deriding the conservative paper you mentioned forming at UNC-CH?

here:
Quote : | "My mistake, I couldn't tell amid all the ing when I pointed out your beloved fringe publication has a snowball's chance in hell of lasting more than a few years..." |
here the assumption is that I was responding to your post because I disagreed with the statement that *my* "beloved fringe publication has a snowball's chance in hell of lasting more than a few years." When I was actually responding because you sounded like a pompous jackass.
Oh, and if you're going to call me illiterate and lecture me on english comprehension then you probably shouldn't include sentences like this in the same post:
Quote : | "While on the third hand you a sentence later you decide all you see is really "a bunch of bitching"...when on the fourth, "a bunch of bitching" pretty much sums up your entire time in this thread" |
In reality, my initial post presented a problem with the technician and then offered a solution, which goes beyond the realm of bitching and into constructive criticism. You, on the other hand, just want to complain about a group of people you don't like, which would be considered bitching.
The rest of the time was spent trying to slightly deflate the ego of a very arrogant person. Apparantly, that's a somewhat impossible task given that you seem to be completely divorced from reality. As such, this will be my last post in this thread. Have fun.
(we're probably the only ones reading this thread now anyways.)

Rejected, writer goes Splat!
By TIM SIMMONS, Staff Writer
Mike Massey doesn't think too highly of the guys at N.C. State University who seem obsessed with their pickup trucks, so he made a little fun of them recently in a column he offered to the school newspaper.
His piece -- which also included a heap of criticism about the university bus line, a quick reference to the organic grocery store and a shot at local rednecks -- was rejected in a letter from editors at the Technician. He was told he was "too liberal" and his opinions wouldn't be of much interest to a majority of students.
Massey, an English major, groused a bit. He fired off e-mail messages to friends. Then he started talking with dozens of people about starting a paper of their own. The first issue of Splat! -- with a core group of 25 writers -- is due to be published in November.
It is too soon to know whether splat will describe the fate of Massey's alternative newspaper. But his ability to attract writers and attention has pinned a different label on the Technician -- one that seems a bit strange for a campus newspaper.
It's the mainstream media.
For entirely different reasons, The Daily Tar Heel at UNC-Chapel Hill found itself playing a similar role last month, when one of its columnists made national news with a searing piece that suggested anyone of Arab descent be strip-searched before boarding an airplane.
Editors at The Daily Tar Heel were besieged from both ends of the political spectrum. They dismissed the columnist for taking quotes out of context. The columnist denied the charge and found a sympathetic outlet on conservative radio talk shows. The campus paper was suddenly the mainstream media.
Massey suspects no one will ever confuse his publication with the mainstream media. The problem, as he sees it, is not the political leanings of a campus newspaper. It's the way campus papers try to mimic metropolitan daily papers in style and content without much thought about what really interests students.
"You aren't going to see stories about student government votes or trustee meetings in our paper," said Massey, a senior from Greensboro. "I expect our stories to address the environment, women's issues, minority affairs, sex, student activism, drinking. This is what students talk about, but you don't see it in papers like the Technician."
To get an idea of what Massey hopes Splat! will become, don't think of a smaller version of The New York Times or even The Independent Weekly in the Triangle. Think of the early years of Rolling Stone magazine, in which critical analysis, music reviews and news from the street were delivered with an attitude.
Massey, who will write for the paper but said he doesn't care to be the editor, said the group hopes to sell just enough ads to break even, while charging 25 cents a copy. Producing the paper is expected to cost roughly $1,200 for about 1,000 copies each week. It is to be be distributed at kiosks on campus and a few local businesses.
The group had thought about publishing online only to save money but thought it was important that students have something they could hang onto.
"As noble as computers and technology are, nothing would please me more than to see someone pull out a folded-up copy of Splat! and sit down under a tree to do some reading," Massey said. "That would be a privilege to be a part of that."
Splat! has a tough road ahead, but alternative publications do succeed from time to time. At Duke University, the student-run Matter Magazine is in its third year and its first without founders Macy Parker and Andy Kay, who have graduated. Current editor Charles Lin said they thought The Chronicle, the campus paper, wasn't doing enough to cover arts and entertainment in the community.
At UNC-CH, Marisa Brickman created a magazine called 'Sup in the late 1990s to chronicle the underground rock scene.
"The biggest problem with alternative publications is they are very difficult to keep going once the person with the passion graduates and leaves," said Jan Yopp, associate dean of journalism at UNC-CH. "But it's a great experience for those who try it."
At this point, Massey can only look forward to the day when he can look back on Splat! as a great experience.
"I'm having fun," he said. "But I tell you what I really want to do. Once we are up and running at N.C. State, I'm coming to Chapel Hill to get it going there. And then we're going to Duke and Wake Forest. This is something students need."
Staff writer Tim Simmons can be reached at 829-4535 or tsimmons@newsobserver.com. Staff writer Roger van der Horst contributed to this report." |
