The acting is quite good, and the script/dialogue is fantastic! Its nothing like you'd expect from a Sci-fi film

Pink, don't let a trailer turn you off. Advertising in general for Firefly AND Serenity have been terrible at best. Any preview for this isn't going to give you the real picture.
Go roll the dice on it, it needs support - I can promise you will like it if you are a fan of adventure/sci-fi. If you don't like it, I'll be held responsible 10/21/2005 12:27:47 PM |

I was so excited about seeing the trailer that I really didn't think about how lame it would look to someone who didn't already love the series.
But yeah, that trailer looks fucking stupid in retrospect.

I just saw it and loved it. Joss Whedon kicks ass. I never watched Firefly, but I might have to pick up the DVDs soon.
And they're definitely right about the trailer. Looking at it, you'd never expect the caliber of film that it ends up being. 10/21/2005 4:03:19 PM |

I just bought my firefly set.
InitiallyI downloaded it, watched it - felt bad, and ponied up to support Joss and the 'verse.
it was only 30 bucks on amazon for 14 ep's + plus it has alot of extras, etc 10/21/2005 4:34:42 PM |

^^^I didn't think it was hackneyed at all. Every time you turned around it was subverting some kind of standard scifi cliche, like the loner stalwart hero who sacrifices his life for the good of the crew ("Zoe if I'm not back in an hour, you pick this ship up, and you come rescue me"), or the dead guy's last words (Book tells Mal it's all his fault, and of course the line "coming from you that means practically nothing"), etc. 10/24/2005 10:24:08 AM |

I bet that universal knew that it wasn't going to make a ton of money in the theaters and that they're waiting for the dvd release. I loved it by the way. (number of theaters definantly limited the money intake on the first weekend.) 10/24/2005 9:57:13 PM |

It opened on almost 2200 screens, which, while not as large as your more standard blockbusters (which might have as much as 50% more), it's per screen average was less than $5000 on the opening weekend, which isn't that spectacular. It's not bad, but not great. 10/25/2005 2:57:17 AM |

Barely heard of Firefly, wanted to go see Serenity so I downloaded the shows. Next day, I bought the shows and saw Serenity. This is good stuff, people. Pay your respects to some good sci-fi.
Now that I have the Firefly DVDs, Serenity DVD is definitely on the must-have list.
It's unfortunate that the marketing has been so poor on the movie. I hope that DVD sales may spark Universal to pick up a sequel. You know the entire cast would love to do one. Bring it back for some more! 10/25/2005 5:10:05 PM |

^^^^ I'm referring to the economic performance of the film.
You can tell this because I AM TALKING ABOUT THE ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE FILM.
If you knew anything about me, you would know that I clearly do not use the box office performance as a measure of a film's worth. I was just continuing the discussion about Serenity's performance, particularly where SuperGlue said that the # of theaters was why the film wasn't doing particularly well. 11/5/2005 6:15:07 PM |

because fans of the show felt it deserved more hype and accolades then it got...whether thats true or not, they also feel it requires the hype and accolade in order to merit sequels or continuation of the series. i think that pretty much covers it. 11/6/2005 2:57:09 PM |

is this more like star wars or actual science fiction?

Not like Star Wars. The characters are really what's important here... not the special effects and stuff. That's not to say I don't like Star Wars, but it's just that after seeing Serenity, and then watching the paper-thin characters of Star Wars, it's crazy.
Plus, I don't know exactly what you mean by "actual" science fiction. It's very much like a western as well.

Just got the DVD yesterday.
The movie was quite good. Dude has a hardon for women that kick ass.
They REALLY didnt need to kill off both Book and Wash(crap i hope i got his name right). It just wont feel right if they make a sequel missing both of those characters.
Wash was pretty flat, but he added comedic relief and having a married couple on the ship added a dynamic that I enjoyed.
I am glad they focused on the Reavers since thats one thing that I was interested in the series explaining but didnt.
oh, i dont see how you can enjoy this movie having not seeing the series. Its critical IMO.

i just think half the jokes would fall flat, the deaths of Book and Wash would have meant nothing to you, and the relationships between characters would have been paper thin without having seen the series.

^^A lot, apparently.
I mean there's not a lot of stuff I remember that left me confused in the movie and I picked up on most of the stuff as it came along (Mr. Universe, that guy they hid with, the Reavers, etc.). The only thing that sticks out in my mind right now is the backstory between Mal and that chick and possibly some of the details about the intergalactic government.

Supposedly, Whedon doesn't plan on doing any more tv series and pretty much closed the book on a revival of the show. Plus, Fox still retains the rights to the series and probably won't relinquish them if it seems profitable and at one point several cast members said they wouldn't want to work for Fox's tv division again. Universal has been considering the possibility of a tv movie sequel to air on the Sci-Fi channel.12/21/2005 1:21:07 PM |

I just dont see how they could continue the series after this movie. Maybe if they had only offed Book, but with Book AND Wash gone it just wouldnt feel right to me.
I guess they could bring in new character(s) but I doubt that would work.
oh and also...i thought Kaylee(sp?) looked a LOT hotter than she normally did, dont know why though.
